SURFACTANTSSolazyme and AkzoNobel to developsurfactants and coatings fromtriglyceride oils

Renewable oil and bioproductscompany Solazyme Inc andAkzoNobel, a global paints, coatingsand speciality chemicals company,have entered into an agreementtargeting the development ofadvanced tailored triglyceride oils andcommercial sales for near-termproduct supply. The agreement isrooted in a shared commitment tosustainability and high-performanceproducts derived from triglycerideoils. Commercial supply of multi-thousand ton quantities of highlysustainable algal oil is expected tooriginate from the Solazyme BungeRenewable Oils Joint Venture oilmanufacturing plant in Brazil. Sales ofproduct are anticipated to commencein 2014, with pricing to be competitive

and based upon Solazyme’s cost ofmanufacturing. Product developmentefforts are anticipated to begin in 2H2013, and are focused on a numberof AkzoNobel’s end-marketapplications, specifically surfactantsand paints and coatings.

Oxiteno launches at FCE Cosmetique

At FCE Cosmetique, held recently inSao Paulo, Brazil, Oxiteno launchedinnovations developed fromrenewable resources for applicationsin cosmetic formulations. ALKOPONNS ECO 92 is a highly concentratedsurfactant for applications intoothpastes, soaps and otherformulations. It provides a creamyfoam and higher cleansing powerwhen applied in soap formulations,the company claims. It is alsoconsidered a green product, beingmade from palm oil, Oxiteno reports.The OXISMOOTH line of greenemollients provides pleasant sensoryprofiles for products such as bodymoisturizing lotions, after-shave andshower gels and other skin-conditioning products, because of itsproperties of dry touch, highspreadability and emollient power,Oxiteno says. According to HPCbusiness manager and generalmanager of Oxiteno’s Uruguay unit,Mauricio Lopes, both launches areassociated with the development of‘green’ innovations, focused onsustainability and great performance.‘As Brazil is the third largest personalcare market in the world, we areworking to meet not only thedemands of our clients but also thoseof consumers,’ he says. From 2006 to2012 the sales volume of thecompany’s Home & Personal Caredivision has increased an average of14% per year and exports have grownover the same period by nearly 48%,which reflects the result of thecompany’s ‘internationalizationstrategy’, Lopes reports. ‘Oxitenowants to strengthen its position inpersonal care, consolidating itsposition even more in hair care andmainly growing in skin and baby care,and deodorants, always givingattention to the use of renewable raw

materials that combine health andwellbeing,’ he says.

Diterol AL40PF (INCI name:potassium olivoyl hydrolysed wheatprotein and myristyl lactate) is asecondary polyethylene glycol(PEG)-free co-surfactant made of asynergic base of naturalbiodegradable surfactants includingolive oil, wheat protein and myristyllactate. The product increaseswashing efficiency, viscosity, densityand foam stability; lessens skinirritation due to primary surfactants;and provides immediate hydrating,smoothing and softening effects. It isa yellowish, pourable paste and hasa slightly olive odour. Its activematter content is 40% plus or minus2% and its pH is 6.5-7.5.
