"Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High...”
On this last Sunday of Advent, Luke’s Gospel account of the Annunciation brings us to the threshold of the celebration of the Nativity of the Word made flesh. In this Annunciation Gospel, God establishes a divine dwelling place in a most unexpected place - in the womb of Mary. The Word is made flesh by God’s initiative—it is God-given! By fixing a place (First Reading) for divinity in human flesh and blood, God fixes a place for us within the divine embrace. Truly, the Lord is with us!
As we all rush around today attending to the last-minute details of our preparations for the coming of our Savior, Jesus, I would like to reflect on the words from Pope Francis from his 2016 Christmas “Urbi Et Orbi” message:
“Today the Church once again experiences the wonder of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and the shepherds of Bethlehem, as they contemplate the newborn Child laid in a manger: Jesus, the Saviour. On this day full of light, the prophetic proclamation resounds:
“For to us a child is born, To us a son is given.
And the government will be upon his shoulder; and his name will be called
“Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Is 9:6)
The power of this Child, Son of God and Son of Mary, is not the power of this world, based on might and wealth; it is the power of love. It is the power which created the heavens and the earth, which gives life to all creation: to minerals, plants and animals; it is the force which attracts man and woman, and makes them one flesh, one single existence; it is the power which gives new birth, pardons faults, reconciles enemies, and transforms evil into good. It is the power of God. This power of love led Jesus Christ to strip himself of his glory and become man; it led him to give his life on the cross and to rise from the dead. It is the power of service, which inaugurates in our world the Kingdom of God, a kingdom of justice and peace. For this reason, the birth of Jesus was accompanied by the angels’ song as they proclaimed:
“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!” (Lk 2:14).
May the Peace, Joy and Love of Jesus’ birth be with you all this Christmas and always! Fr. Jacek

FAITH FORMATION
Today’s Gospel (Lk 1:26-38) is the account of the annunciation to Mary by the angel Gabriel that she is to be the mother of Jesus. The angel announces God’s desire that Mary bear a child, who will be great – the Messiah, the holy Son of God. The messenger greats Mary, “Hail, favored
one! The Lord is with you.” Mary is blessed because God has chosen her to be part of God’s saving plan. The phrase “the Lord is with you” is a frequent expression throughout sacred Scripture for God’s assurance. No matter what obstacles Mary faces, God’s indwelling in her will be realized.
ADVENT PRAYER Lord God, thank you for your never-ending grace! “The Virgin today brings into the world the Eternal
and the earth offers a cave to the Inaccessible. The angels and the shepherds praise Him
and the magi advance with the star. For you are born for us, Little Child. God Eternal!”
CHRISTMAS EVE FALLS ON THE 4th SUNDAY OF ADVENT THIS YEAR. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN
FOR YOUR MASS OBLIGATIONS?
Christmas Eve could be confusing this year as it falls on a Sunday. Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on a Sunday, but the following day is also a holyday of obligation. This may all seem straightforward – why not just go to Mass on Sunday and then again on Monday? However, the question is - vigil Masses. If you go to a Christmas Eve vigil Mass this year, have you also fulfilled your Sunday obligation? The answer is: no. “The primary purpose of a holyday of obligation is to call the faithful to celebrate particular dimensions of the mysteries of Christ and His Church. Since obligation is attached to specific mysteries being celebrated, it is not possible to fulfill two obligations in one celebration.” Please see Mass options under our Christmas Mass Schedule in next column.

O HOLY NIGHT!
“On this night, the ancient yet ever new proclamation of the Lord’s birth rings out. It rings
out for those keeping watch, like the shepherds in Bethlehem two thousand years ago; it rings out for those who have responded to Advent’s call and who, waiting watchfully, are ready to welcome
the joyful tidings which in the liturgy become our song: “Today is born our Saviour”.
The Christian people keep watch; the entire world keeps watch on this Christmas night… this proclamation, with its inexhaustible power to renew us, echoes once more on this holy night
with special force: this is the Christmas of the Great Jubilee, a living remembrance of Christ’s two thousand years, of his wondrous birth, which marked the new beginning of history.
Today “the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us” (Jn 1:14).
“Today”. On this night, time opens to eternity, because you, O Christ, are born among us, coming from on high. You came to birth from the womb of a Woman blessed among all women,
you “the Son of the Most High”. Once and for all your holiness made all time holy: the days, the centuries, the millennia. By your birth, you have turned time into the “today” of salvation.
