April 12, 2020
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church, I write to you in the middle of the most unusual Holy Week of our lives. We are all missing the sacramental consolations and human connections we like to have with one another when we come to church for Sunday Mass. Many find that worship services on computer or television are helpful, but - like online teaching and learning - are not quite the same as being present. However, when conditions require cooperation so that sickness has less chance to spread, we must adjust and persevere. And so it is up to us to make this Easter a joyful day anyway. We should say to God and to one another: ALLELUIA! Why? Because Jesus Christ is raised from the dead, and so we have a chance to share his eternal life. Appreciate this even more in the face of death. Jesus is the reason for our trust and our hope and our peace, especially when we are worried or stressed. Jesus is the Son of God and the Good Shepherd who came to lead us to eternal happiness! He is the Redeemer who paid the price for our sins. We suffer too - but He is the innocent, tortured, crucified, murdered and buried and resurrected Redeemer! Especially if the sadness of death fills our hearts or the troubles of life depress us - this Easter day is very valuable for all of us, because Easter enables our own eventual victory over suffering, and our own eternal life in a place of happiness and peace. During Holy Week we were supposed to reflect on Jesus' suffering and death and burial. Despite distractions and possibly even a failure to focus, by divine mercy today we are allowed to celebrate his resurrection! Today we say Alleluia: we praise God our Father, thank Jesus our Savior, and ask that this mystery of faith will flood into our minds and hearts and make us much better followers of Jesus and stronger members of His Church. Let me copy on this page one of the Gospel passages that tell us about what happened on Easter morning. This is God's message to us from the Gospel of Saint Matthew, chapter 28:
After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.
And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.
His appearance was like lightening and his clothing was white as snow. The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men.
Then the angel said to the women in reply, "Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said.
Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has been raised from the dead and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him.’”
Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on the way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage.
Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me."
Praised be to you, Lord Jesus Christ! Yet because the joy of Easter is always preceded by the suffering of Good Friday, which is where we live while on earth, let me offer you four petitions for your frequent use today and in the weeks ahead: * For our brothers and sisters nearby and around the world, who are suffering from this present epidemic, that they may have the care and comfort, the healing and health they need, let us pray to the Lord... * For those who feel alone or depressed because of their isolation, that they may reach out to others in safe ways, and that others will reach out to them, let us pray to the Lord... * For the physical health and spiritual strength of those who work with and for the sick, that they may not lose heart, will stay healthy themselves, and will be appreciated for their efforts, let us pray to the Lord... * For the many people, both family and strangers, who have died as a result of this virus, that their faith in God, especially in the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Redeemer Jesus Christ, will lead them to eternal light, joy, and peace in the kingdom of heaven, let us pray to the Lord... Wishing you confidence in God's love and grace, and a joyful and holy Easter season, Msgr. William Belford

. Just as many families need a paycheck each week, your parish family counts on our Sunday collection to pay our expenses. Many thanks to those who have mailed or deliv-ered their contributions. I hope many will help us make up for the baskets that will be empty for weeks. But please also think about using this crisis to make your Sunday contrib-uting easier and more dependable. You can do this by join-ing others who use WeShare. On a computer follow these simple steps: 1. Go to our parish website: www.saintteresasi.org. 2. Scroll down to a cute little church and see “Give Online.” 3. Go to Primary Church Collection and then Recurring Church Collection. 4. Think about a per-centage of your income, and enter the amount you want to give. Money can be deducted safely from bank accounts and credit cards, under your control and as you see fit. Many people do this already. I think that having more people join us in this practice is important for our parish future.
St. Teresa’s Bereavement Group St. Teresa’s Bereavement Group will be meeting every Saturday morning at 10:45 via the Conference Call Sys-tem until they can resume their scheduled meetings in the Parish House. This is the phone # for participants to call in at 10:45am on Saturday mornings - 978-990-5027. The access code is 455962# as some may want to refer to it in the weeks to come. Contact Deacon Novella Law-rence at 347-581-1082 if you have any questions. A call before is requested to make first-time visitors comforta-ble.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE SOMEONE WHO CAN LISTEN?
Everyone goes through crises sometimes. When that is
happening, we can benefit from a conversation with a profes-sional counselor
who shares our Catholic perspective.
Our parish can make a connection for you with the Arch-diocese of New York's
PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK. Our parishioners can make an appointment to meet with a professional counselor on Staten Island or anyplace in the Archdiocese, for up to six meetings, with only a $10 co-pay
per session. This can be arranged easily. Tell one of our priests that
you want to talk with a counselor. He will contact the PAR-ISH COUNSELING NETWORK on your behalf, and then you can call and arrange your first visit with someone who
can listen.
