“THE LORD BE WITH YOU”
This phrase is the spoken hope in the gospel for this Friday’s feast of the Immaculate Concep-tion. The angel Gabriel says to Mary that the Lord is indeed with her as she is prepared for the wondrous event that awaits her. This beautiful gospel passage, Luke 1:26-38, reminds me that every baptized Christian is called by God in a special way to exercise our particular gifts, for each of us was “chosen before the world began”.(Eph. 1:4) So it is that Mary’s uniqueness was in her saying “yes” to God, despite all risks. It is this faithfulness that caused the Church in 1854 to define the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. In essence , this is that Mary was conceived without original sin, a gift that God gave to this most “blessed and highly favored daughter”.
“I am the handmaid of the Lord”. I think these words spoken by Mary are also those most de-fining of her. Contrast that simple statement with the excesses of Marian descriptors in years past, where she is rather loftily termed ‘Mediatrix’, for example. This, I believe, does not do jus-tice to the humble mother of Jesus, a woman whose ready ‘yes’ changed the whole course of his-tory. She changes it from an emphasis upon power and glory as the way to salvation toward a focus upon servanthood and humility as the way. Even over 40 years ago, Pope Paul VI warned against a “sterile sentimentality” regarding Mary. Yet still today, we may hear and read about this apparition or that weeping statue, and are led to believe that she is like God, instead of being simply godlike. There is a difference! Too often the focus is upon miraculous powers instead of the ready and humble faith that she possessed.
Even though all of us struggle with the human condition of suffering and death, Mary’s rising above being “deeply troubled”, and having faith despite doubts is what can inspire us to be simi-larly godlike. We cannot be without sin, but we can emulate the strength and commitment in the person of Mary. My friends, you are uniquely gifted yourselves. The Lord is with you.

Work Update
You will notice the back of the church feels warmer, this is because the drafty old wooden door at the emergency exit by the stairwell has been replaced. Also, the consistently problematic door on the West side of the gym has been replaced by a commercial grade door that should accommodate the heavy traffic much better.
