CAS FOR CHS PRE-IB STUDENTS
Creativity, activity, service is a required component of the diploma program that challenges students to develop new skills, learn more about themselves, and to make a difference in their communities.
Purpose: To encourage students to become more well-rounded and worldly citizens; to give students a platform for their passions to be recognized
CAS is a collection of student experiences in the areas of creativity, activity, and service
CAS experiences may be individual, school-based, community based, ongoing, one-time, or advocacy
HOW DOES MY STUDENT “PASS” CAS?
Must complete 75 total hours of CAS experiences - 25 hours per strand
Must document these hours by: Recording experience in Log Book (with supervisor signature)
Collecting evidence that the experience occurred
Completing a reflection on their experience
All documentation must be presented in the form of a portfolio
Portfolio (with logbook, evidence, and reflections) should be turned in to Ms. Roberts by May of the student’s sophomore year.
A CAS presentation for 9th and 10th grade CHS Pre-IB students will be scheduled in the coming weeks to go over all CAS requirements.
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR CAS (HOW TO KNOW IF IT COUNTS)
1. Identify your strengths and note areas you can grow
2. Demonstration of challenges that have been undertaken, and the new skills learned in the process
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
All learning outcomes should be addressed by the conclusion of the 75 hours

Widely recognized by colleges and
universities globally.
College credits will transfer to in-state public
universities. May not transfer to out-of-state
universities.
Students receive most well-rounded
preparation for college; most competitive
for college admissions
Students receive college prep to some
degree for the courses in which they are
enrolled.
Students are expected to be prepared for
college-level work and expectations.
IB VS. AP VS. DUAL ENROLLMENT –WHAT’S BEST?
All three options are fully weighted, meaning that the courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale, as opposed to a 4.0 scale for general-level courses (Honors & CHS Pre-IB classes are weighted on a 4.5 scale).
All three options provide students with some degree of college preparation and potential to earn college credit. IB provides the most comprehensive preparation of the three options.
IB is the most rigorous curriculum available at Choctawhatchee High School. Colleges and universities, particularly those with highly-competitive admissions processes, seek students who challenge themselves with the most rigorous course offerings available to them at their high school.
Students enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme are typically viewed more favorably in the admissions process than a student taking AP or dual enrollment.
Dual enrollment does provide college credit, but… Not all dual enrollment credits transfer, particularly to out-of-state colleges/universities.
Some colleges/universities do not accept dual courses for college credit if the student also earned high school credit for the same course.
Dual enrollment courses can be inconsistent. It is difficult for colleges/universities to determine the level of preparation a dual enrollment student has.
IB, and even AP, provides colleges/universities with a better idea of the student’s level of preparation and work ethic, as the standards for IB and AP courses are consistent and more easily measured.
