Residents complained, sopolice are stepping up speedlimit enforcement on Moun-tain Road.
Town Council ChairmanTim Slocum said the Moun-tain Road issue was broughtto his attention after a recentaccident caused a power out-age. A resident asked thecouncil to look into speedingon the road at its latest meet-
ing, and Slocum let the PoliceDepartment know residentsare concerned.
“It raised the ire of peoplewho live in the neighbor-hood,” Slocum said of the ac-cident. “Residents continueto complain about traffic onthat road.”
Police Lt. Jim Fasano saidresidents suggested that stopsigns or speed bumps beplaced on the road, which isoften used to bypass a con-gested section of Route 10.
“There are regulations wehave to follow,” Fasano said.“We can’t just put stop signsup to slow down traffic.”
Stop signs can only be usedto grant right of way at inter-sections, and Fasano saidspeed bumps on a public roadare impractical.
The department is using atraffic counter to determinewhen, and in which direc-tion, drivers most often speedon Mountain Road. Using thedata, Fasano said, police can
position themselves on theroad when drivers are mostlikely to speed, then stop thespeeders and issue tickets.
With more enforcement onthe road, Fasano said, policehope to discourage speeding.
“We remind people to drivelike it’s your own street,” hesaid.
Fasano confirmed that arecent accident knocked out
power. He said the driver wasdrunk, though speed hadnothing to do with the acci-dent. It’s not unusual to re-ceive speeding complaints af-ter an accident in a residen-tial area, Fasano said.
Police are looking at in-creased enforcement of thespeed limits townwide, not

Vandalism at Petit memorialgazebo causes ‘heartbreak’
By Maura Gaffney Special to The Citizen
A gazebo in Norton Parkthat serves as a memorial tothe victims of the 2007Cheshire home invasion hasbeen vandalized repeatedlyin recent years and onceagain in the past few weeks. The gazebo honors the mem-ories of Jennifer Hawke-Petitand her daughters Hayleyand Michaela Petit, who weremurdered during the tragicincident.
Plainville residents KimQuealy and Stacey Nortonhave taken care of the memo-rial, since it was installed in2008, and are deeply sad-dened by the acts of vandal-ism. The women, who haveknown the Petit family formany years, take special careto decorate and beautify thearea to honor the memory ofthe Petit women.
“Every time we put uphanging flower baskets, theyget stolen,” Quealy said. “Weput up the baskets on Sunday, and by Thursday they weregone. We’ve found some thatwere thrown into the canal. We use our own money to buythe baskets, and I sit and
spend time making them. Itmeans a lot to us.”
Quealy said the vandalismis also upsetting for Dr.William Petit, husband andfather of the women whowere killed in Cheshire. “It’sdifficult when I have to callDoc and say ‘I’m sorry. It’shappened again.’ It’s justheartbreaking to call himand tell him that these thingsare being stolen from hisdaughters’ and his wife’s me-morial.”
The vandalism also has ex-tended to defacing of thegazebo and theft of otheritems in addition to theflower baskets. “There areinitials and names carvedinto the wood. A couple of

Treatment plant’s gift helps another town get back on its feetBy Andrew Ragali
The Cheshire Citizen
The impact of HurricaneSandy was enough to shutdown the shoreline town ofFairfield’s wastewater treat-ment plant, but a gift fromCheshire has the plant upand running at full capacityagain.
Mike Finoia, Fairfield’splant supervisor, said thestorm’s surge sent excessamounts of saltwater intothe plant, compromising mi-cro-organisms that helpbreak down waste and mak-ing the plant dangerously in-effective.
Since many shorelinetowns dealt with the same is-sue during the storm, Finoialooked inland for help, andDennis Dievert, Cheshire’swastewater treatment plantsupervisor, was happy to pro-vide assistance. At no charge,Dievert gave Finoia 30,000gallons of biomass to help re-seed Fairfield’s aerationbase.
“It helped out tremendous-ly,” Finoia said. “We try to be
helpful with one another be-cause at some point we’re allin the same boat.”
Finoia said Fairfield onlyhad to pay a trucking compa-ny to ship the biomass.
Dievert said the biomasswas a mixture of bacterialsludge that is formed in atreatment plant’s aerationbase.
Each treatment plant pro-duces its own mixture, but
when a plant’s mixture iscompromised by somethinglike saltwater, it can takemore than a month to re-growthe proper bacteria that canclean water effectively.
By adding Cheshire’s bio-mass mixture to the aerationbase at Fairfield’s treatmentplant, the bacterial sludgewas “re-seeded” and grewback to normal levels withina week.
“I know Dennis runs agood plant,” Finoia said.
“I know Mike, because weall talk as colleagues in thefield,” Dievert said. “We al-ways help each other out. Hewould have probably gotten itfrom another shoreline town, but they were all havingproblems as well.”
The gift to Fairfield’s treat-ment plant isn’t rare in terms
of how often plant supervi-sors work together through-out the state, Dievert said. It’ssomething that happens allthe time, but normally isn’tpublicized. Dievert said theCheshire plant received ma-terial from Meriden yearsago after an incident.

Thought-provoking les-sons were woven into anevening that began withlaughter, built to belly laughsand wrapped up with smilesand giggles. The format ofthe program was interactive.Simple questionnaires werehanded out, which requiredthe audience to answer withan A or a B choice. Cheshireresident, Theresa Twomey, who nabbed one of the lastremaining seats as the pro-gram got underway, worried
that she was not filling outthe form correctly.
“Sometimes I’m an A onthis one,” she said anxiously.“But sometimes I’m a B!”
“There is no right and nowrong answer,” Saltmansaid. “However, if you copyoff your neighbor, they willknow!”
The quiz indicated not justthe classification of intro-vert and extrovert, but alsothe intensity or level. Basedon this, Saltman put peopleinto groups. Half were (stat-ed tongue-in-cheek) “too nor-mal” and “boring.” Thenthere were groups of extremeintroverts and extroverts.
Though unsure of her re-sponses, Twomey’s numberswere close enough: withouthesitation she joined the restof “her” people at the front ofthe room.

ExtrovertContinued from page 5
to the extreme extroverts, she
said, “This is the winegroup.”
So what and who is an in-trovert? The audience deter-
mined introverts to be shypeople who liked to be alone -and who may be sad or evenanti-social. Extroverts, saidthe audience, were the oppo-site.
To illustrate that people re-act and process their reali-ties differently, Saltmanquoted legendary Swiss psy-chiatrist/psychologist, Carl
Jung. Jung theorized that extro-
verts get their energy fromother people. “Extroverts ex-perience the world to under-stand it,” said Saltman. Hebelieved, Saltman explained, that “Introverts focus insideof themselves. They needtime to recharge. They needto understand the world be-
fore they experience it.”Here’s where the myths
come into play. To classifysomeone as outgoing, andtherefore an extrovert, is notnecessarily true. Saltmansaid someone who wasthought of as an extrovertmay in reality need fivehours of being alone in orderto emerge as an outgoing per-son.
However, there are someconsistencies in each classifi-cation, she explained. Intro-verts tend to think and reflectand then act; whereas, some-one who is an extrovert tendsto act first.
“Would you want your sur-geon to be an extrovert?” sheasked, generating laughterfrom the audience. “Extro-verts are motivated by theoutside world. They enjoy awide variety of experiencesand find networking exhila-rating.”
Introverts, are motivatedinternally, Saltman saidadding that for introverts“their minds are so activethat they are closed to theoutside world.” This maygive people the wrong im-pression about them.
As the program wounddown the audience talkedwith Saltman about the worldbecoming easier for intro-verts, for example: working-at-home and on-line comput-er courses are commonplacenowadays, along with on-linechat rooms, ordering food tobe delivered or using self-checkout lines and ATMs. Noface-time, no human contactnecessary.
Nina White, a retired artteacher, said, “This has beenvery educational” in that ithelped people to realize noteveryone is the same. Whitesaid the information openedher eyes and she hoped oth-ers might change their per-spectives in how they see andlabel others.

This barn at LeavenworthTree Farm is at least 200-years-old and structurallysound. It is in the final stagesof being re-sided by the mas-ter woodworkers of BringBack Barns. Sam Sowyrda,Renard Thompson and Mar-ius Amstudz have been work-ing on the renovation. Thecompany is based out of Cole-brook and does much of itswork through the Connecti-cut Trust for Historic Preser-vation.
The Leavenworth barn is aclassic English Bank barn, us-ing scribe-rule framing andbuilt in the mid-to-late 1700s.“It’s possible,” Sowyrda said,

“There are other streets intown where we get a lot ofcomplaints,” he said.
Besides direct enforce-ment, Fasano said the depart-ment also may use solar-pow-ered trailers that sit on theside of the road and tell driv-ers their speed. The trailersaren’t often used in the win-ter though because of dimin-ished sunlight. The depart-ment is exploring putting apermanently mounted speed
device on Mountain Road.“What we are asking for is
that the public slow down,”Fasano said.
Fasano is also asking resi-dents to be aware that policealso are using state aid toconduct a Click It or Ticketcampaign. Police in town areusing marked and unmarkedcars to issue tickets to peoplewho aren’t wearing seat beltsor are using cell phoneswhile driving.

When I reflect on mychildhood in a small Ver-mont town, I do not find thelavish Christmas scenes por-trayed by sentimental au-thors. Instead, I see my par-ents scrabbling in the hardtimes of the depressionyears and see few remindersof strong holiday traditions.
Marrying into a Scandina-vian family brought intoview a Christmas sceneloaded with traditions whichI have over the years come toenjoy. One tradition whichused to be observed at ElimPark in Cheshire, but is hardto find locally now, is the ju-lotta, a Swedish church serv-ice at daybreak on Christmasmorning.
With the frosty morningair, the little group at thechapel, and the singing, themessage of the day took on aspecial meaning.
To me, the most beautifulpart of the service was hear-ing the story of the birth of
Scandinavian traditionstaken to heart

Jesus read in Swedish. Onedid not have to understandthe Swedish language to ap-preciate Luke, Chapter 2.
One of the most popularSwedish traditions is the cel-ebration of St. Lucia Day.(The Swedes say loo-see-ahunlike the Italians who sayloo-she-ah.)
It is customary on this dayfor the oldest daughter in thefamily to dress in white, set awreath of candles on herhead and serve her parentscoffee and lussekatter in bed
on the morning of Dec. 13. Swedish-American organi-
zations and some Lutheranchurches have developed theLucia story into an extrava-gant pageant with girls vy-ing for the Lucai role andoverflowing crowds pressingfor reserved seats.
Lighted candles in thewreath have given way tobattery-operated lights, forsafety’s sake, and instead ofsaffron-flavored buns, sweetbread and cookies are oftenserved with the coffee.
Norwegian -American or-ganizations often hold a jule-trefest sometime during theChristmas season. It is afamily-oriented party atwhich the Christmas tree ishonored. Julenisse or Santaoften appears to hand outgoodies to the children.
Ghost stories or at least afolk tale may be told. Thebest part is walking aroundthe tree. Participants holdhands and sing carols asthey walk.
One of my favorites is DuGronne, Glitrende Tre, GodDag. The translation goessomething like this: yougreen and glittering tree, good day! Welcome to youwhom we long to see, withChristmas lights and Norwe-gian flags and high in the topof a shining star. Yes, it re-minds us of God.

For the past 15 years, MarkThompson has worked atQuinnipiac University underseveral titles, and currentlyserves as senior vice presi-dent for academic and stu-dent affairs, a job he’s hadsince 2008.
Thompson, who hasresided in Cheshire since hestarted at Quinnipiac, enjoysworking for the school andseeing how “it’s evolved andgrown in a positive way,”specifically mentioning therecent additions of nursingand engineering degree pro-grams.
But the school’s next evolu-tion actually involves him, af-ter an announcement fromthe university on Mondaythat Thompson has been pro-moted to the newly createdposition of executive vicepresident/provost, effectiveJuly 1, 2013.
“Well, I certainly see thepromotion as a challenge anda great opportunity,” Thomp-son said. “The nice thingabout the new position is theopportunity to bring togethersome different areas benefi-cial to students.”
Instead of just concentrat-ing on academic and studentaffairs, Thompson will be re-sponsible for internal opera-tions, including academic af-
fairs, student affairs, athlet-ics, public safety, facilitiesand information technology.
Thompson believes this isa positive change that will fa-cilitate an integration of ar-eas “in ways that better servestudents and continue to in-crease the quality of the edu-cational experience.”
Having one person over-seeing several departmentswill lead to the developmentof the “future classroom” atthe university, Thompsonsaid.
“You can start to see someof the connections you canmake,” he said.
Quinnipiac PresidentJohn L. Lahey said Thomp-son’s promotion “reflectsboth the board of trustees’and my appreciation forMark’s many previous ac-complishments as dean ofthe School of Business andsenior vice president for aca-demic and student affairsand our confidence in hisleadership abilities and whatwe expect will be evengreater contributions toQuinnipiac University in theyears ahead.”
Before assuming his cur-rent position, Thompsonspent five years as dean ofthe School of Business. Hejoined the university in 1998

New Boston College foot-ball coach Steve Addaziopaced back and forth behindthe podium. He waved hisarms as he spoke. His voicegot louder as he hammeredhome his points.
The Eagles have upgradedtheir pregame pep talkssince firing Frank Spaziani.
But will they win anymore games?
“You’re going to get thebest out of Steve Addazio,my family and my staff. I’mproud to be a Boston CollegeEagle, and I won’t let youdown,” he said Dec. 5 afterbeing introduced to the me-dia and the BC community.
“I’ve got drive and I’ve gotenergy. And I’ve got a pas-sion for what I do, for these
student- athletes and forBoston College. We’re onefamily, and together, we’regoing to have success.
“Go Eagles.”A Connecticut native who
formerly coached atCheshire High School, Ad-dazio spent the last twoyears at Temple. Addaziosaid Boston College hadbeen his dream job - evenwhile he was working hisway up through the coach-ing ranks at top-tier pro-grams like Notre Dame andFlorida.
“Dreams do come true,”he said. “I’ve been a lot ofgreat places. All the peoplewho knew me and thefriends that I’ve workedwith knew that I wanted tobe here at Boston College.”
Addazio said he had con-versations about the Boston
College job the last time itwas open, and he also talkedto current BC athletic direc-tor Brad Bates about thecoaching position at his pre-vious job, Miami of Ohio.Bates, who has only been inChestnut Hill for twomonths, said he had a list ofnames for potential open-
ings and Addazio’s namequickly rose to the top; thehiring only took nine days.
Bates said the search was“thorough, meticulous anddeliberate,” and he said hetalked to executives andcoaches in the NFL as well asother colleges and confer-ences. Addazio’s enthusiasmwas one of the things thatsold him on the hire.
“He wants to have a rela-tionship with his team andthe BC community,” Batessaid. “He has a contagiouspassion for his students andthe sport that inspires peo-ple to excel.
“For those of you whohave yet to meet Steve, buck-le up.”
Bates said he also soughtopinions from current andformer BC players. Somemembers of last year’s team
attended the news confer-ence, including QB ChaseRettig.
“He grabs everyone’s at-tention,” Rettig said. “He’sexcited about the program,so it’s going to rub off.”
Spaziani was fired aftergoing 22-29 in four-plus sea-sons as head coach and 16overall at BC. The Eagleswent 2-10 this year - thefourth consecutive seasonthey won fewer games thanthe year before.
Addazio, 53, led the Owlsto a 9-4 record in 2011 andtheir first bowl win in 32years - a 37-15 victory overWyoming in the New MexicoBowl. But this season Tem-ple went 4-7 (2-5 Big East) af-ter leaving the Mid-Ameri-can Conference and return-ing to the conference thatbooted them out in 2004.

An action-packed weekend offootball at Rentschler
By Jim BransfieldSpecial to The Citizen
It’s a second-guessers’field day.
Berlin coach JohnCapodice decided to go fora first down on fourth-and-one from his own 23 withless than five minutes toplay in the third quarterand leading 12-6. ScottMcLeod was stopped coldand Hillhouse took overjust 23 yards from paydirtand the lead.
Five plays later Hill-house star Harold Cooper(9 carries, 90 yards) scoredfrom the three-yard line,Je’Vaughn Moore addedthe point and Hillhousehad a 13-12 lead. The Aca-demics took off from therewith 21 more unansweredpoints and Hillhouse won34-12 in the Class M finals, handing Berlin its sixthloss in seven champi-onship game appearances.
It was the most contro-versial call of the champi-onship weekend, it turnedthe game around andpaved the way for the Hill-house championship.
“When you’re a signifi-
cant underdog, you’ve got topull out all the tricks,”Capodice said.
Capodice’s game plan wasto hold on to the ball andBerlin did exactly that untilthe fateful decision. Hill-house had just the one scoreand Berlin’s ground game, which held a huge 142-42 ad-vantage at the half, had usedup huge chunks of the clockand produced the lead.
In the first half, Berlinran 44 plays to Hillhouse’s11.
That control continuedin the third quarter asBerlin stopped Hillhouse’sopening drive with a goalline stand that stopped theAcademics inside the one. From there, the Redcoatsmoved out to the 23. Thedrive stalled and Capodicemade the call that turnedthe game around.
Had Berlin punted inthat spot, assuming thatBerlin would get itsnight’s average punt of 37yards, Hillhouse wouldhave had to begin from itsown 40, trailing 12-6.
Up to that point, Hill-house had scored on one62-yard pass and had notsuccessfully driven theball against Berlin allnight. But given the giftcard of the ball on the 23,Hillhouse cashed it in.
“Berlin had momen-tum,” said Hillhousecoach Tom Dyer. “It wasn’tstupid to go for it; it wasn’ta dumb call.”
After the Hillhouse stop,

The polls made it officialMonday night. Daniel Handof Madison, undefeatedCIAC Class L champion fora second straight season, isthe No. 1 football team inConnecticut for 2012. The 13-0 Tigers snared the top spotwhen they knocked off pre-vious No. 1 Xavier 40-20 inWeek 5 at Palmer Field andthey sewed it up for good bybeating Windsor 23-6 in theClass L final on Saturdaynight at Rentschler Field.
The championship andaccompanying No. 1 rank-ing were the third for Handunder head coach Steve Fil-ippone, whose teams alsopulled off the daily doublein 1997 and 2004.
“All three of those teamsare very, very close. Eachteam had its own strength,”Filippone said Mondaynight. “To do what this teamdid, you’ve got to be realgood.”
Especially because Handpulled off what could be anunprecedented feat: Beatingtwo other state championsen route to its own champi-onship. Along with posting aregular-season win overXavier, which rebounded towin its third straight ClassLL state title, Hand defeatedHillhouse, which went on towin the Class M crown.
Thus, for a fourth straightyear, the Southern Connecti-cut Conference claimed atleast two state champi-onships in football. This sea-son’s trifecta was unprece-dented. In the four-divisionformat, no conference hadpreviously won three statetitles in the same year.
Yet other conferencescould make just claims thisfall. Ansonia of the Nau-
gatuck Valley League wonits state record 18th CIACchampionship by beatingNorth Branford 59-26 in theClass S final and cappingtheir second straight 14-0season.
The Central ConnecticutConference had a state-bestseven teams in the playoffs, including Southington andPlatt. Two reached the fi-nals: Windsor (Class L) andBerlin (Class M).
Filippone remarked thatwhile Xavier was the bestteam Hand faced this year,Windsor presented thetoughest matchup, particu-larly with its defensive frontfour.
“The only team that phys-ically got the better of us atany point in the season wasWindsor in the first half (ofthe state final),” said Filip-pone, whose teamed trailed6-3 at the break. “We weregetting beat up. We were get-ting tossed around. That’swhat changed in the secondhalf. We challenged our line-men.”
With the Class L final upin the air at halftime, talkamong poll voters rapidlydevolved upon who would beNo. 1 should Hand lose:Windsor or Ansonia?
After Hand put up 20unanswered points in thesecond half, it was a mootpoint. For all but three vot-ers, anyway: Xavier got onefirst-place vote in the 25-man New Haven Registermedia poll and Ansonia re-ceived two in the 13-manNew London Day coachespoll.
One of the coaches whovotes in the latter is Anso-nia’s Tom Brockett. No. 1 onBrockett’s ballot, however, was Hand.

“I didn’t vote us No. 1 allyear. I just thought they de-served it,” Brockett said.“They’re a great team. Theybeat Xavier and Hillhouse;they deserve No. 1.”
“I’m not surprised, be-cause he’s a class act,” Filip-pone said of Brockett. “AndI’m flattered to be consid-ered with Ansonia, a teamthat’s been consistently win-ning games for 100 years. For
him to throw his hat in thering for us means a tremen-dous amount to us.”
Ansonia wound up No. 2in the coaches poll and No. 3in the media poll. The rank-ings were the reverse forXavier (12-1). Hillhouse, which lost only to Hand andXavier in finishing 11-2, wasNo. 4 in both.
The rankings were alsothe same for spots 5-7: Wind-sor (11-1), Class LL runner-up Norwich Free Academy(12-1) and Class LL semifi-nalist Staples-Westport (10-
1).North Branford (12-1) fin-
ished No. 8 with the coachesand No. 9 with the mediafolks. Class LL semifinalistGlastonbury (10-2) was No. 8with the media and No. 10with the coaches.
Berlin (11-2) was rankedNo. 9 with the coaches.Southington, which wentundefeated in the regularseason before falling toGlastonbury in the Class LLquarterfinals, was No. 10with the media.

all the momentum shifted tothe Academics and they ranwith it all the way back toNew Haven with the champi-onship plaque in tow.
The SCCThere is no doubt the
Southern Connecticut Con-ference is the state’s best.Three of the four titles werewon by SCC teams, Xavier inLL, Hand in L and Hillhousein Class M.
Hand capped its undefeat-ed season and clinched itsoverall No. 1 ranking with a23-6 win over Windsor.Xavier continued its secondhalf surge with a blowout 48-
14 win over Norwich FreeAcademy. Only Ansonia ofthe Naugatuck ValleyLeague broke the SCC’sstranglehold on state footballand finished 14-0 with its 59-26 romp over North Bran-ford.
Top performersXavier’s DeAngelo Berry
(30 carries, 260 yards) andAnsonia’s Arkeel Newsome(28, 234) turned in the toprunning back performanceson championship weekend.Hillhouse’s Je’VaughnMoore (eight carries, 109yards and a touchdown, 2-for-3 passing for 90 yardsand a TD), North Branford’sBrandan Basil (22-for-43, 398yards and four TDs) andHand’s Brendan Bilchik (92
yards running, 141 passing)were the quarterback stars.
Xavier’s Tim Boyle, ar-guably the best pure quar-terback in the field, had aquiet night going 2-for-5 for109 yards against NFA. Butthen, Xavier ran for 408yards so why throw? Justfor fun, he did throw a 94-yard TD to James Sullivan.
CrowdsThe Friday night crowd
for the Xavier vs. NFA gamewas 4,576. The paid crowdfor all day Saturday was5,189. The best draws in or-der were Xavier, NFA, Hand,Windsor, Berlin and NorthBranford. Hillhouse and An-sonia drew very smallcrowds.

Cheshire’s plant “was run-ning good” during the storm,Dievert said, and it had extrabiomass that wouldn’t bemissed.
