I’vealwaysadmiredpeoplewhohavestyle,butIabsolutelyadorepeoplewhosharetheirsenseofstylewithothers.CharlesFaudreeisthedeanofthislattergroupofbelovedindividuals.Byallowingeditorslikemetopublishhisdesignworkinourmagazines,CharlesprovidesaccesstohisuniqueandconsiderabletalentsformillionsofAmericans.IknowfrommyfourteenyearsaseditorinchiefofTraditionalHomethepositiveimpactofthisgenerosityisbothinstantandlasting.
Anditoftencameintheformofreadermail!AssoonaswereleasedanissuethatcarriedCharlesFaudree–designedinteriors,theletterswouldstarttopileupinourmailbox.Peoplewhowerenewtotheworkoftheprolificdesignerwerewooedbytheluxuriousbeautyhecreates.Theykeptusbusyforweeksansweringintentquestionsabouteveryfabric,finish,paintcolor,anditemshowninourphotographs.ReaderswhowerealreadyinitiatedtoCharles’magicapplaudedourlatestinstallmentandoftenintheirlettersreferredtotheirfavoriteroomsfrompaststories.Overtheyears,webecameaclearinghousefortheFaudreefanclub,andwelovedeveryminuteofit.
TheeffectofCharles’workislasting;itdelightsthetenthtimeyouseeitalmostasmuchasthefirsttime.WhileIknowmanyofhisroomsbyheart,IstillstoptodevoureverydetailwhenImeetthemagainonanoccasionaltripthroughpastissues.JustasyouknowaChopinsonatabythefirstfewbars,youalsoknowaFaudreeroombythefirstfewglances.
Hisperennialtrademarksincludeclassicupholsterychairsthatbeckonwithbeauty,fabricsthatenticetheeyeandthetouch,andantiqueswelllovedand
perfectlyplaced—allflavoredwithhissignatureFrenchaccent.Thefamiliarityisendearing.
Charlesisgenerouswithhistalentsandalsowithhisinteriors.Hisfavoritedesignprinciple,“toomuchisneverenough,”meanseverysurface,detailandcornerisconsidered.Nothingisoverdone,buteverythingplaysaroleineachmasterfullyorchestratedscheme.Thereisabundanceinhiswork.Adiningtableisaccompaniednotjustwithchairsbutalsoabenchandmaybeasettee.Miniatureupholsteredchairsareplacedatthefootofthebedorsnuggleduptoacoffeetable.Pillowscomeintripletsandarealwaysstylishlyturnedout.Woodenchairframesaregracefullycarvedorembellishedwithcolororgilt.Theresultisaseamlesssonnetofalifethat’swelllivedandalsowellappointed.Luckyforus,Charlessharesthisworldofhisineveryoneofhisexquisiterooms.

In1978,asIwasabouttoturnforty,IgatheredthecouragetoleavemysalespositionandmovefromDallas,myhomeformanyyears.Iwantedtopursuemydream—interiordecorating—andchosetomovebacktomychildhoodhome,Muskogee,Oklahoma,toopenmyfirstdesignstudioandantiquesshop.
NancyE.IngramdiscoveredmethereandpublishedmyveryfirsthouseinTulsaHome&Gardenmagazine,andNancyandIhavebeentogethereversince.Asshesays,“Wehavehadquiteatriptogetherandwe’restillontheroad.”IamadecoratorandIamproudtosaythat.IthankGodeverynightformytalentandmywonderfulclients.
Sincethatfirststory,myhomesandthoseofmyclientshavebeenfeaturedinalmosteverydesignmagazine.ButforyearsIwantedtodoabookofmyown.JeniferJordan,agreatinteriorphotographer,said,“IthinkIhaveabookinme,too,andIwouldlovetodoitwithyou.”Nancyagreed.
ThenM.J.VanDeventersignedontohelpmewrite.WegrewuptogetherinMuskogeeandshe’sinterviewedmeandwrittenaboutmyworkforyears.Shehasanamazingwayoffinishingmysentencesforme.Ourfirstbook,CharlesFaudree’sFrenchCountrySignature,wasreleasedinOctober2003andiscurrentlyinitseighthprinting.Now,hereweareagain—ourgreatteam,includingeditorMadgeBaird—withoursecondbook.Wehopeyouenjoyitasmuchaswehaveenjoyedproducingit.
Throughtheall-newphotographyweintroduceyoutosomeofmyfavorite
clientsacrossthecountryandabroad.OneofthemisJoanneHearst,whoonceownedaduplexnextdoortomeinTulsa.Whenshehiredmetoredecoratetheduplex,shepickedoutthemainfabricforeachroomandthenwentoutoftownandlefteverythingelseuptome,sayingthatshewanteditdecorateddowntothesoapinthedish.Itwasabsolutelytheperfectjob.
WhenJoannereturnedtoTulsaafteraseven-monthabsence,theduplexwasdone.Shedidn’tcallthenextdayorthenext,andIwasconvincedshedidn’tlikeit.However,whenshedidcall,shesimplysaid,“Idon’tknowwhereyouhavebeenallmylife,butyou’regoingtobewithmetherestofmylife.”Thatwasalmosteightyearsago,andwehavebeenworkingonherseventy-five-year-oldfinca(farm)inSpainforthepastfouryears.Herhome—themanorhouseforatinyvillagenearSeville—isfeaturedinthisbook.
Peoplearealwaysaskingmewheremyfavoriteplacesare.Paris,ofcourse,ismyfavoriteEuropeancityandIgothereatleastonceayear.IfyouhavenotbeentotheParisFleaMarket,letmetellyouthatitistrulyadelightfulexperience.Itishugeandeachvendorrollsuphisdoorstoaspacenobiggerthanaone-cargaragefilledwithseventeenth-andeighteenth-centuryfurniture.Outsideonthestreets,othervendorsteaseshopperswithfoldingtablesfilledwithjunque.Iloveitall,andnevertireofgoingthere.Contrarytowhatyoumayhaveheard,IhaveneverfoundtheFrenchtoberude,andtheParisFleaMarketlovesAmericans.
I’moftenaskedifIspeakFrench,andeventhoughIamofFrenchheritage,Idon’tspeakthelanguage.WhenIwassixty-fiveyearsold,IdecidedtotakeFrenchlessons.Afterfivelessons,westartedlearningabouthowachairisfemaleandasofaismale,andIgotoutofthere.Thatisnotmykindoflanguage.Plus,whenIgotoFrance,theydon’tevenunderstandthefewwordsIdoknowduetomyOklahomatwang,likecombien(howmuch)?I’mnotmuchofawheeler-dealer;it’seasierformetonegotiatepricesonpaper,withmyBicpeninhand.
IloveLondonalmostasmuchasParis,butfordifferentreasons.ThereisnoplacelikeParis,withitsromanticlanguage,wonderfulfoodandwine.However,
theEnglishseemtounderstand“Okie”better,plustheEnglishtheaterissodelightful.IgotoEnglandtobuywhatIcall“smalls.”TheFrenchdon‘thavesmallaccessoriesandIdoloveStaffordshire,MajolicaandEnglishteaboxes.
TherearesomanythingsI’vecollectedinParisandLondonthathavebecometreasuredpossessions.MyclientsknowIhavesoldsomeofmyhousestotallyfurnished,withcertainexceptions.Theblackamoorandthelargecowtureen,whichyouwillseefeaturedonthediningtableinmycurrenthome,aretwoofmyfavoritethings.ThereisalsoapaintingthatJimmySteinmeyer,theworld’sbestroomrendererandalifelongfriend,didofmythreeKingCharlesSpaniels.Incaseoffire,IwouldgetNicholasoutfirst,thentheSteinmeyerpaintingandthetureen.Idon’thavetoworryabouttheblackamooranymore.Mybrother-in-law,DaleGillmanofTulsa’sAntiqueWarehouse,isanythingbutsubtle.Everytimehecametomyhouse,hewouldremindmetobesuretoleavetheblackamoortohim.SoIgiftedittohimonhissixtiethbirthday.Ihadenjoyeditfortwenty-fiveyearsandfigureditwashisturn.Istillgettoseeitbecausewelivejustacrossthewayfromeachother.
TheGermanMatelochtureenhasaninterestingstory.Althoughitisafavoriteaccessory,Ididn’tpickitoutmyself.Onmyfiftiethbirthday,IwasinLondonshoppingwithseveralfriendsonPortobelloRoad,whichisagreatfleamarket.Theyallchippedinandgaveittomeasapresent,andjustforfuntheyfilleditwithboxesofinstantchickennoodlesoup.
MyfriendsandclientsknowhowmuchIlovemyblue-and-whitecollection.IstarteditrightoutofcollegeandatthatpointonlyknewaboutBlueWillow.IhavebranchedoutsincethenandnowcollectEnglishandChineseexport.Thiscollectionhasbeendisplayedatsomepointineveryroom,fromthekitchentothelivingroom,inallofmyhomes.
Ofcourse,Nicholasisatreasure.Inthisbook,youwillseehiminalmosteveryroomofmyhouse.Heisnotaprop,andIhaven’ttrainedhimtoperform.Whenwewerephotographing,wedidn’tmovehimfromroomtoroom,he’sjustaverylovingcompanionwhoalwayslikestobewhereverweare.Likemanyofyourpets,hebelievesheisaperson.AndsometimesI’mnotsosureheisn’t.

Ibelievethatfirstimpressionsarelastingsoitisimportanttomakeentrieswelcomingandinviting.Ilikeentriesthatprovideaclueoraglimpseofwhattherestofthehousewilllooklike.Whetherit’sacolortheme,thestyleoffurnishings,orakeytoahomeowner’spreciouscollections,it’snicetogreetguestswiththatkindofwelcome.
Severalotherroomsofone’shomearealsoconsideredpublicareas—placeswhereguestsarewelcomeorentertained.Whetheratformalpartiesoronspur-of-themomentoccasions,peoplebesidesimmediatefamilyspendtimeinthelivingroom,denorlibrary,kitchen,diningroom,andfamilyroom.
Forme,thedesignoftheseroomsoftenbeginswithapivotalfabric,adominantcolor,oronemagnificentantique.Justonedistinctivepieceoffurniture,suchasatoweringarmoire,anunusualcommode,oragreataccessorylikeagrandmirrororpainting,willmaketherestoftheroomseemmoreimportant.Oneoutstandingpiececanchangethewholeplanforaroom.Iencouragemyclientstobuildtheirhomearoundafewclassicstaples,justasyoubuildafashionwardrobe.
Imakesignaturepiecesapartofmyhomeandcabinandmovethemfromroomtoroomtokeepthelookfresh,satisfyingmyperpetualneedforchangeinacontinualquesttocreatenewvignettes,newtablescapes,andalways,newhomes.
Asignaturepiecedoesn’thavetobeexpensive.Youcangetthelookwithout
theseventeenth-centuryarmoire.Paintedfurnitureisreallybeautiful,soinvogue,andoftenquitereasonableincomparisontopriceyantiques.Thekeyisfindingapieceyoureallyloveandwanttolivewithforever.
Colorisimportantinmakingthatfirstimpressioninahome’slivingareas.Aredlivingroomcanbejustasinvitingasaneutralcolorsuchassoftblue,gray,creamorsand.It’sallaboutthewayyouusecolorthatmakesthedifferencebetweenaroomthatisjarringandonethatiscomfortabletolookatandbein.Usingcolorsmartlycanalsoenhanceyourstellardisplaypiece.
Usuallyinpublicspaces,thedominantpiecesuggestshowaroomwillbearranged.InFrenchcountryhomes,thehearthwastypicallythefocalpointofthemainlivingarea.Inthiscountry,too,awell-appointedfireplacemantelisoftenthefocalpoint.Sometimesanarmoire,anantiquecommode,orapaintedreproductionsideboardcanbecomethefocalpointaroundwhichtherestoftheroomisorganized.
Inalibraryorstudy,Iliketousefloor-to-ceilingbookcasesbrimmingover.Booksarelikeoldfriends:Ifeelcomfortablesurroundedbymyfavorites.Whethervintageornew,theycreateaninvitingatmosphereandmakeadesignstatementalltheirown.Mylasthousedidn’thavealibraryandItrulymissedit.
Whenfinishedwithfavoritecollections,art,mirrors,sconces,lotsofdecorativepillows,customlampsandshades,and,always,freshflowers,ahome’spublicroomscometolifeandenchantguests,aswellasthosewholivethere.
Thefauteuild’bureau(deskchair)isaLouisXV/LouisXVItransitionalpiecethatishometooneofmyfavoriteneedlepointpillows,“Loveme,Lovemydog.”
ALouisXVtableinmylibraryiscoveredwithantiquevelvet.AStaffordshirefigurallamptakescenterstageonthetable.ThematchingwalnutbergèresareLouisXVRevivalstyle,circa1930.Asaltglazecachepotadornsthetable.Thebookssurroundingtheroomgiveitwarmthandpersonality.TuckedbeneaththetableisaGermanbronzeCavalierKingCharlesSpaniel,restingonacushion.
Inmysmalllibrary,aroomIalwayswanttohaveinmyhome,agate-legcentertableishighlightedwithamonumentalvaseonastand.IlluminatingtheroomisatoleDirectoirechandelier,convertedfromitsoriginallifeasanoillight.Onthepaneledwallandbetweenmatchingswing-outlampsisaScottishoilportraitofachild.Thisisoneofthecoziestroomsinmyhome.
Thisroomcouldeasilybeafabled,periodsaloninParis.TheHaskins’formallivingroom,doneinredandcream,presentsalookofpureeleganceandgrace.AheraldicmirrorabovethesofaisflankedbygoldbracketsandImarivasesandsconces.Everythinginthisroomisarrangedsymmetrically,withpairsofcandlesticks,matchinglampsandfreshflowersasaccents.
ASwedishpaintedcupboardinthefamilyroomishometoacollectionofbooks,platesandflagfigurines.Confitjarsadornthetopofthecupboard.ThecustomchairontherightisupholsteredinRoseTarlow,andthefauteuil(armlesschair)is“Sophie”frommycustomfurnitureline.TheslipperchairsarecoveredinBennisonfabric,andthedraperiesarePierreFrey.
ApaintedcommodeintheSalisburyfamilyroomishosttoseveralStaffordshirecowfigures.Thelampsarefashionedfromwoodencandlesticks.WatercolorsbyJamesSteinmeyer,plateswithanaturetheme,andanoldlanterndecoratethewallabovethecommode,andaminiaturesetteesitsatthebase.StripedsidepanelsaccenttheFrenchdoorsleadingtothepatio.
TracyandIfoundthemantelandtheantiquebotanicalprintsonatriptoFrance.Theantiqueolivejarissittingonawoodfragmentthatservesasawallbracket.Onthemantelbetweentheantiquefauxboisjugsandcandlesticksisaceramicsculptureofabasketofmushrooms.Familyportraitsgracethecoffeetable.
TheoverallviewoftheBakers’greatroomexudeswonderfulcharm.Abovethecast-stonemantelbyJamesKelleyisanoriginaloilpaintingbyLeonardWren,whoisknownforhisbeautifullandscapes,includingthoseoftheFrenchcountryside.ThesofaiscoveredwithaBrunschwig&Filscheckfabric.Thewingchairis“Sophie,”frommycustomfurniturelineandiscoveredintoilebyPierreFrey.Thefloor-to-ceilingbookcasesrevealabeautifulcollectionofblue-and-whiteChineseexportporcelain,whichisverycompatiblewithallthetouchesofredintheroom.
LeeJofa’s“TreeofLife”fabricsetthestageforthedesignintheSalisburylibrary.Thecustomrugrepeatsallthecolorsinthedraperyfabric.Ofspecialinterestisthepurplehorsehair,metal-studdedRegencybencharrangedbythepaintedbarleytwisttable.Alsoofnoteistheantiqueredchinoiseriedesk,whichpicksuptheredintheLeeJofafabric.
BeautifulbeadingtrimsthiselegantlampintheSalisburylibrary.
Behindcloseddoors,theinsideoftheshelvesandfacingarelinedwithastripedfabricandtrimmedwithaprettybraidinsteadofthemoretraditionalgimp.Thetelevisionishousedinthispieceoffurniture.
The“TreeofLife”LeeJofafabricintheSalisburylibrarywasalsousedtoupholsterthisantiquechair.
Acustombanquet-stylesofaisinanicheallitsown,surroundedbyfloor-to-ceilingbookcasesrevealingtheSalisburyfamily’sloveofreading.ThesmalloilpaintingisbyTulsaartistWendyMatson.
ProofthatcontemporaryandtraditionalcanlivetogetherharmoniouslyisseeninthegraciouslivingroomofCarolPielsticker’scontemporaryhome,theonlycontemporaryhomeI’veeverdone.ThestonemantelandovermantelarebeautifullydecoratedandincludetoleurnswithporcelainbouquetsfoundattheParisFleaMarket.ThesofaiscoveredinCoraggiofabric;thechinoiseriecoffeetableisbyRoseTarlow.AmodernisticpaintingbyTulsaartistOttoDeckerblendswellwiththesleekarchitecturalstyleofthehome.
AnantiqueFrenchstonemantelintheSalisburylivingroomishighlightedwithaneleganttrumeaumirror,lavishlydrapedwithdriedleavesandsilkribbons.Pewterpotsholddriedhydrangeas,andastonefigureholdsastonebouquet.Achild’ssetteerestsinfrontofthefireplace.Miniaturechairsandsofasaddinteresttoadesignandseemespeciallyrightinahomewherechildrenaregrowingup.
ALouisXIVcommodeintheentryofSharonandJohnBaker’shomeisflankedbyantiqueLouisXIcarved-walnutsidechairscoveredinBennisonfabric.ThelampsarefromVaughan,withcustomshades,andareaprettycomplementtothemagnificentantiquechinoiserie-styleEnglishfootbath.AbovethecommodeisanoriginaloilpaintingbyLeonardWren.
Quiet,mutedcolors,beautifullytexturedfabricsandfabulousantiquesmakethisaspecialroomintheBakerhome.TheFrenchCountrybuffetdisplaysaprizedcollectionoftortoiseshell.Theduoofchairsoneithersideofthesofaare“Patrice,”frommycustomfurnitureline.Brunschwig&Filschenillefabricgracesthesofa.ABennisonoakleaf–patternfabriccoversapairofchairsandisusedintheside-paneldraperiesdressingthearchedwindows.
RegencysidechairsandastripedottomanaddwarmthtotheentrysceneinthehomeofPattiandDavidBowman.OntheantiqueEnglishAdams-styleconsoleisacollectionofItalianpolychromeandgiltwoodcandlesticks.ApairofPortugueseVistaAlegrevasesrestonbronzeormoluputti(cherubs)onbothsidesoftheRegencygiltwoodmirror.
Asimplebuffet,probablyoriginallyathomeinaFrenchchateaukitchen,belongedtometwohomesago,butIsolditbecauseitwastoolargeforlaterhomes.AsIsooftendowithantiquesIlove,Iboughtitbackwhenaclientwantedsomethingfancier.Nowit’sperfectfortheentrywayinmynewTulsahome.Apairofnineteenth-centuryDirectoiresidechairsaccentthebuffet.Thelargepaintingwasoriginallyfourinchestaller,butIcutoffthebaseofittoaccommodatespaceinaprevioushome.AsymmetricalcollectionoftransferandChineseexportplatesarecompanionstothelandscapepainting.ASwedishpaintedclock,whichhasenjoyeddifferentsettingsinnumeroushomes,istotherightofthebuffet.
TheHaskins’sunroomiselegantinshadesofsoftyellow,goldandblue,butverycomfortableandeasytoentertainin.Sidepanelsweretheperfectchoicetodressthewindowswithoutobscuringthelovelyviewoftheirbacklawn.Tolechandeliersaddmutedlightingtothisroom,whereStaffordshirefiguresstarinseveralvignettes.LizHaskinssays,“Whenthesuncomesupitjustfillstheroomwithlight.It’sratherspiritual.Ourcatslovetosunbatheinhere.”
ThisintimatesettingintheHaskins’sunroominvitesspiritedconversation.Itisoneoftheirfavoriteplacestoentertainandisconvenientlyadjacenttothediningroomandkitchen.Anantiqueorientalruganchorsthisspace.“Thisiswherewetalkabouteverything,”saysJohn.“Thisistheroomwhereeverythinghappens.”
Thisviewofmylivingroomshowsmyfondnessforsymmetryinthearrangementofchairsthatflankthefireplaceandchairsplacednearthewindows,givingaviewofthehome’seastlandscaping.
ApairofLouisXVwalnutbergèresalareine,circa1750,flankthefireplaceintheformallivingroominmyTulsahome.TheovermantelofcarvedwoodincludesasmallpaintingofNicholasbyTulsaartistJanetDavies.ThemantelisaccentedwithDelftliddedjars,aLouisXVequestriantrophyormolumantelclockandapairofquiterareNapoleonIIdogcandlesticks,purchasedonmyfirstvisittotheNewarkFairinNottinghamshiretwentyyearsago.NearthemantelareaChineseexportgardenseat,ajardiniereandanottomanupholsteredinaleopardprint.
ThesittingroomoffmykitchenhousesmycollectionofStaffordshirecowsinthebookcasesandonthemantel.AbovethemantelhangsacountrypaintedtrumeauwithanEmpire-styletolechandelier.NicholasenjoystheantiqueCountryFrenchwingchaircoveredinPierreFreyfabric.
TheluxuriousentryinthehomeofMichaelandDruHammerhasavarietyofunusualfocalpoints.ApairofFrenchfauteuilsandaFrenchfruitwoodgametablesetthetoneforthebeautytocomeintherestofthehome,whichwasoriginallybuiltformusicianHenryMancini.Alargefruitwoodbreakfront,circa1860,abeautifulorientalrugandaSpanish-stylechandelierareotheraccents.A“faux”butlerstandsbesidetheimpressivepaintingTwelveButterflies,paintedbyDonaldSultanin1996.
Artfromsomeofthenation’sbestmasterartistsisthedominantthemeinthisareaoftheHammers’livingroom.Aneighteenth-centurycommodecreatesanelegantsettingsurroundedbymagnificentart.Abovethecommodeisapainting,LesBoutonsS’ouvrent,byMartheOrant.Ontheeaselisasmallpainting,SallyFairchild,byJohnSingerSargent.OntherightisMe’neetEnfant,byWilliamBouguereau.
ThearcheddoorwayleadingtothebacklawnaddsadistinctivearchitecturaltouchtotheHammerhome.
ThespaciouslivingroomoftheHammerhomeblendsaninterestingmixoffurnishings,artandaccessories.Theceilingisaccentedwithunusualwoodbeams.DruHammer’spassionforhotpinkandgreenisreflectedinthecolorcombinationsofprintsandstripes.TheantiqueFrenchlimestonemantelishighlightedwithalargepaintingbyDonaldSultan.TotheleftofSultan’scontemporarypaintingisadrawingbyHenriMatisse.Anineteenth-centuryPersianrugpullsthecolorsintheroomtogether.

Forme,theattentiontodetailbeginsinthedressingroom.Organizationbringsmeagreatdealofcomfort,andI’vealwayshadafondnessforwell-organizedclosetsanddressingrooms.Placeswhereclothingishungorfoldedneatlyinplace,easytoseeandreadytowearmakeslifesomuchsimplerandgetsthedayofftoabetterstart.Andthere’snoreasonthatthesemostprivateofspacescan’tbeprettyaswell.Evenwhenroomsseemtobeoverflowingwithshelvesofbooks,patternedwalls,heirloomcollectibles,comfortableoverstuffedsofasandchairs,Igravitatetoorderly,symmetricalarrangementswithafocalpoint.ThatisreallyverymuchthewayFrenchhomeslook.Byimposingorderwithbalancedarrangements,onecaninsertbeautifulobjectsandstillnotoverpoweraroom.

It’sinterestingtonotethatbedroomswereuncommoninFrenchcountryhomesinthenineteenthcentury.Peopleeithersleptbythefireinthesalle(livingroom)orinlofts.Ifafamilywasluckyenoughtohaveabed,itwasoftendrapedforprivacynotonlywhilesleepingbutforgettingdressed.
