Stage 1: Evaluate Needs
• Determine the major types of construction needs on the project
• This information is necessary for the construction crew

Stage 2: Layout the Section
• Concrete slab foundation– Lay out the width of the building
– Lay out baseline for bottom of footings
– Lay out footing thickness and finish grade
– Lay out slab (4”) and fill below (4”)
– Lay out stem wall, width of footings, brick veneer ledge and interior footings

• Wall Layout– Locate top of the top plates 8’-0” above floor
– Locate interior side of exterior walls
– Locate interior walls
– Make sure interior walls line up over a footing
– Lay out headers for doors and windows

– Lay out 7’0” ceilings for soffit
– Lay out patio post width and height
– Repeat these procedures for the upper floor

– Locate overhang on each side
– Lay out bottom side then top side of the top chord
– Lay out plywood sheathing

• Begin at the roof and work down
• Place an “X” at the end of continuous members and an “/” in blocking
• Line types in sections– Thin - 5-mm lead or 0.010 with CADD– Bold - 9-mm lead or 0.024 with CADD– Very Bold - 9-mm lead or 0.047 with CADD

– Finished grade to top of slab
– Depth of footing into grade

ensure notes are aligned
• Primary section should be fully noted and the other sections will have construction notes
• Use the guidelines on pages 748 to 750 for notes about the roof, walls, and upper floor and foundation
