Changes – Past and Present
Dear WHS families:
Arena check-ins, back-to-school night, and the
opening of the new J wing are in the rear view
mirror, and now I am looking forward to cooler
mornings, Homecoming, the Foundation’s annual
campaign, annual College Day, the end of the first
quarter on October 13, and the end of daylight
savings time on Sunday, November 5th. And it's not too early to mark your
household calendar for first semester finals: December 18 – 21 (Mon, Tue, Wed,
and Thur). Teachers do not give early finals, so book and re-check your winter
break plans accordingly. Check for the semester finals schedule on our website.
Over the last two years, we have gathered on-campus data
on student stress and ability to sleep, complete homework,
and engage in activities (both on and off campus) through
our 8 Conditions of Student Success surveys and focus
groups. Last fall, we had a 10-person team of students,
parents, staff, and an administrator participating in the
Challenge Success conferences at Stanford about redefining
success for students. WHS has had the policy of no
homework over the semester break in December, and that is
still the case. This 10-person team proposed a no-homework policy over
Thanksgiving weekend, the new February break, and the traditional spring break
as well. Last May, our Shared Decision Making Council (SDMC) approved the
extension of the no homework policy to additional breaks. What that means is
that teachers can not collect homework for the
first two days upon a return from the above
breaks. We believe that downtime (whether it's
a good night's sleep, a balanced course
schedule, or no homework breaks) is as
important as academic time and think this
policy will improve your student's experience
as a Wildcat.
The addition of a SAMTRANS route #78 from the
Emerald Hills area along with the new bike racks on
campus has made commuting to campus more
attractive. Plus, the opening of the Alameda entrance
bus circle alleviates traffic at the Churchill entrance.
Growing enrollment and staff means parking is
impacted. Please remind your student drivers not to park in the neighborhoods
and to visit the AVP offices for a parking permit. The best advice around any
school (and particular a school with new drivers!) is slow down and be patient.
Go WILDCATS!

Cambios – Pasado y Presente
do.
paciencia.

tremendous job not only in the water, but battling construction as well, as I write this new lights are being
installed enabling QUAD games to be properly lit into the early evening. In addition, thank you to our new
cheer and cross country coaches, Jaymie Guillena and Kelsey Theriault, who have done a wonderful job
growing their programs and bringing new energy. Special thanks to our football program that has continued
to work hard and compete despite a plethora of injuries, rest and recover during the bye week!

ABO Financial Update Fall 2017
Welcome Wildcat Families to the 2017-18 school and fiscal year. We are off to a great start, and have had enthusiastic
participation from all grades, but especially from the Freshman class. Lots of Spirit Wear flying out the door!
As always, a hearty Thank-You to all the families who support the ABO and Athletics at Woodside. Together we make
our programs stronger and provide a great avenue for personal and social development for our children.
Close of 2016-17 Financial Summary
(Approximate amounts, actual financials are available on request.)
Income
ABO Un-restricted Donation Income $ 22.6k
Team-Directed Donations $ 69.2k
Corporate Sponsors/Advertising (Field signs) $ 9.3k
SpiritWear sales (gross, before COGs) $ 29.5k
Football-Basketball tickets, program sponsors (net of costs) $ 15.5k
Crab Feed Income (net of expenses) $ 6.5k
Hit a Thon income (net of expenses) $ 7.9k
Golf Tournament (net of expenses) $ 6.6k
Total $ 167.1k
Expenses
ABO Grants to Athletic Department and Teams ($ 66.3k)
Team Directed Donations (Above donations passed thru to teams) ($ 69.2k)
Donation expenses (production of signage, programs, ads/promo) ($ 5.6k)
COGS (Spirit wear, including resupply order for spring) ($ 20.3k)
Office expenses (Bookkeeping, web software, Tax prep, other) ($ 10.0k)
Bank charges (credit card transaction charges) ($ 2.2k)
Athletics awards and gifts ($ 2.7k)
Scholarships ($ 4.0k)
Total ($180.3k)
Year Ending Bank Balance $ 51.3k
Where Does the Money Come From, and Go To?
16-17 was our first year using the team-directed request (family donation)
model where every penny of these donations is passed directly to the teams. This
typically provides a team with funding toward expenses such as jerseys/warmups/
gear-bags, balls & consumables, tournament fees, etc. We had exceptional
participation, defined as an athlete’s parent gives something, from some sports at
80-100% (Golf, Waterpolo, Volleyball, Track/XC). Other sports’ participation
was OK at 30-50%, and others can do much better. We hope for at least 50%
participation by parents on behalf of their athletes for ALL sports this year. Sports
whose parents did not contribute much also did not request much from the ABO in
terms of grants. We hope to increase our support by working closely with all
coaches this year! (Continued on page 10)
10 October 2017 Communicat
Parents appreciated coordination of team-directed requests to the start of each sport’s season. They understood what the
coach needed, and how the funds will be used. $69.2k was donated by families in response to these team-directed
requests.
A second, but equally crucial source of money, are ABO Grants, which come from funds raised by the ABO (sale of
Spirit wear, fundraising events, season ticket sales, sponsor’s signage). These funds are separate from the team
donations. These typically help or fully pay for major items like new wrestling mats and volleyball nets/antennae, soccer
and water polo goals/nets, pitching or hitting machines, replacement Football pads/helmets/safety & field-equipment, and
the electronic timing system for Track & Field. Without the ABO’s help, our sports teams WOULD NOT have these
items. The district’s funding is limited and there simply isn’t money to cover these items. ABO Grants provided almost
$60k in additional funds toward requests made by the teams.
Importantly, the ABO again provided financing to permit purchase of big ticket items with long lead times, ahead of any
opportunity for teams to fundraise specifically for those needs. This ensured the equipment or resources would be
available to the teams on time, as their season began.
Finally, teams who, by the nature of the sport, have particularly high expenses or require a particularly expensive piece
of equipment (Football, Lacrosse, Track, Softball, Baseball as examples) may also ask their players reach out directly to
their friends and extended family networks, with additional crowd sourced fundraising. The ABO strives to coordinate
with teams on these efforts, to keep families informed and to provide clarity on who is doing what and why.
One final but very important request. PLEASE, visit the ABO website at www.woodsideathletics.org and REGISTER (or
update for this year) your family’s account. This allows us to run much more efficiently, minimizes errors, and permits
you to track your various donations and purchases over the year.
Get involved, support YOUR athletes, and let’s have another great year. Go ‘Cats!

Inspire a student - Help students and young people grow.
Build a strong community - Increase morale within your company and with your neighbors.
Promote your industry – Develop your future workforce with local employees
3 Easy ways to accomplish this:
Be a guest speaker in Engineering 1 or Computer Science 1 classes
Connect your company with WHS: Most corporations encourage their employees to volunteer at local organizations that their employees care about. You might be surprised to find others at your company who are looking for a local volunteer opportunity, but don't always know what's available. Let us know who to contact and we will work with your community relations, community engagement or other corporate volunteer resource.
Be a career mentor to a student in either the Business Technology Academy, Green Academy or Engineering II class - Want to make a difference in a teenager's life? Had a mentor that impacted you? Woodside High School is looking for mentors to share career information with juniors. Easy communication through email, phone and in person has a lasting impact on a student. Program kicks off November 2
nd.

Woodside Parent Education l Fall 2017-18
Charlene Margot, Director, The Parent Education Series
Welcome back! The Woodside Parent Education Series has an
outstanding slate of events planned for Fall 2017, and we look
forward to seeing you this year. On September 26, we welcome
Dr. Tauheed Zaman for a critical presentation on “Clearing the Smokescreen: The Evidence on
Marijuana.” Dr. Zaman, a nationally recognized expert on cannabis and addiction, will answer these
questions and more: What does the evidence show about today’s marijuana (cannabis)? How does
the potency of today’s “weed” impact the developing adolescent brain? Can marijuana be addictive?
This presentation is recommended for parents and guardians.
On October 26, the WHS Parent Education Series presents Dr. Cynthia Colon in discussion of her
new book, Tips, Tales & Truths for Teens. As a former college admissions officer and private
school counselor, Dr. Colon will share real stories and offer candid advice to parents and students
about how to apply to college. Her book, a practical “road map” for teens, comes highly
recommended by college admissions experts. Dr. Colon was a featured presenter at the 2017
Western Association for College Admissions Counseling (WACAC) conference. The Parent
Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Woodside PTSA, the Sequoia Healthcare
District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.
