20 or 25 hours per week CELT offers two study options for its General, Academic, Business English and IELTS examination preparation courses. You will be able to enrol in a 25-hour per week course with 20 hours of a core program plus five hours of skills workshops. In this option, you will finish at 3.15pm on Mondays to Thursdays and 1pm on Fridays.
We strongly recommend the 25-hour enrolment, including the academic skills workshop, if you have a scholarship for English language and tertiary studies. We recommend the everyday communication skills workshop for those who want to improve their listening and speaking.
There is also the opportunity to choose a 20-hour per week option and finish each day at 1pm. In this option you won’t take the skills workshops. Both study options are available for enrolments with tourist, working holiday and student visas.

CELT organises two broad categories of courses for groups of participants. Firstly, it designs courses specifically for the needs of each particular group. In this kind of course, participants tend to stay together in the one class, and it is preferable that students are of similar language ability. Participants can also join cultural exchange activities with other international students at CELT. The second type of course offered gives participants with different levels of English ability the opportunity to take part in courses such as General, Business, Academic English and examination preparation with other international students.
CELT has extensive experience in the planning and delivery of intensive English language courses. These individually
tailored programs are for groups of participants from high schools, university faculties, corporations, government and cultural bodies. The programs vary in duration from four days to 12 weeks and generally fall into one of three types: English + Australian Culture, English for Special Purposes and TESOL Professional Development. CELT has designed and delivered English for Special Purposes courses with a focus on discipline areas such as engineering, medicine and management, amongst others. Customised programs can be offered throughout the academic year and delivered across all levels of English proficiency.
UWA English language programs focus on the very highest quality teaching and learning with a high degree of action and interaction…it’s all about having very serious fun!
“ Once I started studying English at CELT, I was able to transfer from my original course of General English to a Cambridge program and then Academic English…there is great flexibility and support within the Centre”

The UWA Centre for English Language Teaching offers two ways, or pathways to improve English language proficiency to the level required by the University for entry into its undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
CELT’s Bridging Course has been granted NEAS Premium Product Endoresment.
The Bridging Course has been designed for international students who wish to study at UWA but do not have the required level of English language proficiency. The program is also suitable for students with unconditional entry into UWA who would like to further develop their language ability and confidence before commencing theirtertiary studies.
A 70% pass in the Bridging Course meets the University’s English language requirement for most under- and post-graduate courses. However, some courses at UWA have higher entry requirements, for instance:ÌÌ Master of Business Adminstration (Flexible and full-time)
require an overall 75% with no skill below 70%ÌÌ All Faculty of Law courses require an overall 85%
The Bridging Course will help students to:ÌÌ Improve their English language skills to the level

Students unable to meet the Academic English and Study Skills Bridging Course entry requirements have the option of improving their English competency by starting with a General English, or English for Academic Purposes course at CELT.

The following progression chart shows CELT’s courses and levels, and the average number of weeks of study required. It also provides an approximate correlation between the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels and CELT’s levels of study. It is important to note that progression through the levels at CELT is approximate and based on the average English language learner.
An alternative pathway for university entrance is also available through our English for Academic Purposes program, together with preparation for the IELTS or TOEFL examination.
Whilst it is a structured course with an underlying pedagogy, English for Academic Purposes, which is offered in five-week modules, is modified every term to meet the needs of the class group.
By accommodating itself in this way to the knowledge and ability of its students, this course offers a highly supportive way to develop academic skills and English language ability. This focus on student needs incorporates assessment of achievements according to the composition of each class. For this reason, students choosing to study in English for Academic Purposes must also sit for an IELTS or internet-based TOEFL examination.
CELT recommends that to maximise learning opportunities, students enrol in the 25-hour per week option of the English for Academic Purposes course.

Western Australia covers one-third of the Australian continent. Spanning over 2.5 million square kilometres (1 million square miles), Western Australia extends into two different climatic zones. When it is warm and dry in the north of the State, it is cool and wet in the south. Bordered largely by desert to the east, Western Australia is bounded by 12,500 kilometres (7813 miles) of the world’s most pristine coastline to the west. Western Australia is a land blessed with some of the world’s
most precious natural phenomena including the dolphins of Monkey Mia, the 350-million-year-old Bungle Bungle range and the towering karri forests of the South West. Venture beyond Perth to see a vast country of big experiences. Be in awe of landscapes carved by nature over millions of years. Immerse yourself in Aboriginal culture. Get up close and personal with the unique flora and fauna of Australia. Situated in the far north is the Kimberly region, an ancient landform of rugged ranges
with deep, spectacular gorges and pristine sandy beaches. The Pilbara region is the heartland of Western Australia and offers thrilling adventure and ecotourism opportunities. The north is contrasted by the natural forests and vineyards of the South West. Wherever you go, the memories will last forever.
