Center for Contemporary Art Presents Three Image Makers: Paul Cava, Janet Russek, David Scheinbaum October 12, 2018 – January 6, 2019 ForImmediateRelease,September17,2018:TheCenterforContemporaryArtwillopenapowerfulnewshowonOctober12featuringtheworkofthreemajorimagemakers,eachwithhisorherowndistinctstyleandtogetherinkeepingwithCCA’smissiontohighlyworks“fromNewMexicoandforNewMexico.”JanetRussekandDavidScheinbaum,amarriedcouplefromNewMexicoknownfortheircollaborationsaswellastheirindividualwork,willbeshowingalongsidePaulCavafromPhiladelphia,whoismostknownforhissensualandemotionallydrivencollagework.ThisisthepremiershowingofScheinbaum’sandRussek’snewbodiesofwork,andthefirstshowinginNewMexicoofCava’simages.

PAULCAVA,borninBrooklyn,NewYork,nowlivesinPhiladelphia,andisacelebratedphoto-basedartist.Concentratingonthefigure,Cava’sworkspeakstothemostintrinsicofhumanconcerns.Hehasexhibitedpaintings,drawings,andphoto-basedworksfrom1976tothepresentingalleriesandmuseumsintheUnitedStatesandEurope,andhisarthasbeencollectedbyarangeofprivateandpublicinstitutions,includingtheMuseumofFineArts,Houston;thePhiladelphiaMuseumofArt;thePrincetonUniversityMuseumofArt;andtheBibliothequeNationale,Paris.

CavaisalsoknownforhisworkexploringthepoetryofWaltWhitman.In2005,theGermanpublisherGalerieVevaispublishedWaltWhitman/PaulCava,ChildrenofAdamfromLeavesofGrass—aboldunionofWhitman’spoemsandCava’sartwork. ThematerialintheupcomingCCAexhibitionincludesimageswithrelevantandtimelysocialcommentary,aswellassensitivelyexpressedhumanemotions. JANETRUSSEKhasbeenphotographinginNewMexicosincethe1980s,andherworkisrepresentedinnumerousmuseumsandprivatecollectionsworldwideincludinginthepermanentcollectionsoftheNewMexicoMuseumofArtinSantaFe,theBibliotequeNationaleinParis,andtheHighMuseumofArtinAtlanta. Russek’scurrentworkcontrastshighandlowculturethroughtheuseofwordssuperimposedoverimagesofclassicsculptureandRenaissancepaintingsthatshephotographedinmuseumsaroundtheworld.ThisworkwillbefeaturedintheCCAshow.RussekwasalsoafoundingmemberoftheNewMexicoCouncilonPhotography,andhasservedontheboardsoftheMarionCenterforPhotographicArtsandtheAssociationofInternationalPhotographyArtDealers. Sheandherhusband,DavidScheinbaum,havecollaboratedonthreemajorprojectsthatculminatedinbooks;GhostRanch:LandofLight(BalconyPress,1997),ImagesintheHeavens,PatternsontheEarth:TheIChing(MuseumofNewMexicoPress,2005)andRemnants:PhotographsoftheLowerEastSide(RadiusBooks,2017)

DAVIDSCHEINBAUMistheformerDirector/ChairofthePhotographyDepartmentattheSantaFeUniversityofArtandDesign,andProfessorEmeritus,CollegeofSantaFe.HisworkhasbeenexhibitedthroughouttheUnitedStatesandisinthepermanentcollectionsoftheAmonCarterMuseum,FortWorthTexas,theNewYorkPublicLibrary,theCenterforCreativephotography,UniversityofArizona,Tucson,andtheCorcoranGalleryofArt,WashingtonDC. Alsoknownforassistingphoto-historianBeaumontNewhallforfifteenyears,heistheco-executorandexclusiverepresentativefortheBeaumontandNancyNewhallEstate. Scheinbaumhaspublishedwidely,andhisphotographsofNewMexicoandBistiBadlandscanbefoundinhisbookBisti,(UniversityofNewMexicoPress,1987).In1990FloridaInternationalUniversityPresspublishedMiamiBeach:PhotographsofanAmericanDream.In
