Celebrating Community
Festival 2011
2
Welcome to our Community FestivalThis if the fifth year of the Celebrating Community Festivals, yet we have hardly managed to scratch the surface of all the things in our area to give thanks for and to celebrate.
There are wonderful people who look after neighbours and those who give up their time to run groups for children and the elderly. There are lots of unsung heroes. Long before it became a snappy political catch phrase, the church has seen itself as a facilitator of community, an enabler of what has become termed ‘the Big Society’ … each of us looking out for our neighbour ... a sound Christian principal which churches working together in our area are putting into practice.
Once again a group of volunteers from local churches have been working for months gathering information for this Programme of over 100 events. A traditional village fair, talks, tea parties, clubs, exciting church events etc. that we hope will appeal to you. Lots of activities to join in with, places where you can meet with others and extend your circle of friends. Why not give a few things ‘new to you’ a try. I suggest that you go through the Programme and mark the events that catch your eye so that you don’t miss them.
Gardeners, there is a ‘plant swap’ on Wednesday 22nd June. Bring your contributions to Coffee Break at St William’s Church and see whether there’s a ‘treasure’ that you would like to plant up. Katy and Graham will be encouraging us to get our hands dirty - gardening and growing something to eat … this time in a plant pot, so you don’t even need a garden!
As a community, we celebrate with Walderslade Primary School their new school building. You will see that the Headteacher is inviting us to look around the new school from 1.30 to 3.00pm on Thursday June 23rd . [Please see page 23 for more details].
Before the start of the Festival there will be a Community Clear Up, organised by Rev Phil Wootton on Sunday 5th June starting at 1.30 to 3.00pm. If you would like to help contact Phil on 01634 660087 – litter pickers and black sacks will be provided.

Throughout the Festival FortnightGlad to be Grey is an annual two week event for people over 55 years. Introduced by the Churches in Walderslade in 2005 for people who do not get the chance to go on holiday or go out much and wish to make new friends. Outings, meals, games, services etc. are arranged. There is usually a theme to the events and they take place in early May, with other events happening monthly. During the Festival Walderslade Village Library will be displaying photographs from past holiday clubs and more information about Glad to be Grey … do call in and see the display and consider whether this group is one you would like to be part of. If so, please contact Ruth Boyes on 01634 687466.
Fill a black sack! You may feel it is time to have a clear out of old clothes, handbags, shoes, belts, curtains, blankets etc. (We are sorry we are not able to take duvets or pillows). Bring your sacks full of these things to the Coffee Break at St William’s Church – they will then be recycled. To find out Coffee Break opening times please ring 01634 867194.
Newspaper, magazines or cardboard - a large recycling container is outside St William’s Church in Walderslade Village and the church would be really pleased to receive all your card / paper recycling. Open most mornings to receive contributions (closed Thursdays) please ring 01634 867194.
Getting the best from the Bible by Selwyn Hughes who writes ‘in an age of uncertainty, the one sure way to maintain spiritual peace and poise is by focusing on God’s Word each day’. This easy to follow book is available free of charge. If you would like a copy, most of the churches involved in the Festival have supplies to give out or ring 01634 684888 and we will arrange for you to get your free copy.
Children’s Holiday Club 25-29 July at Walderslade Girl’s’ School9.30-12.00 for 5-11 year olds (years 1-6) only £7 for the whole week (if you have a large family contact us about the cost). This

year’s action packed, fun programme’s theme is - Trailblazers – the craziest journey in history (become secret agents and spies!) For more information on pre-booking your children, visit St Philip and St James’ website - pipnjims.co.uk or telephone Rev David Green 01634 864348
Children’s Colouring Competition organised by the Bible Reading Fellowship. Children are encouraged to draw their favourite story about Jesus on the special sheets available most mornings from Coffee Break at St William’s Church or telephone 01634 684888 to get your copy. There are book token prizes given by the BRF. Closing date for the competition is the last Sunday of the Festival (these can be dropped into St William’s Church; 18 Marion Close, Walderslade or The CLC Bookshop in Chatham High Street – opposite Argos).
At the heart of this festival is God’s church working together, setting aside their differences for the love of God and for the love of our community. Within the fortnight there are lots of opportunities to be still and draw inner spiritual strength from God. You will receive a warm welcome from any of the churches listed at the back of the Programme.
My prayer is that you will be blessed by this Festival.
Rev John S Currie (Festival Co-ordinator).
