High cleanliness and maximum safety standards
Equally suitable for laboratories, or medical and industrial high-tech facilities: With Humancare, OWA has developed a ceiling tile that combines highest standards for both purity and safety, even in the most demanding working environments. A key component of the ceiling concept: minimising the effects of particle emissi-ons in the air. This is a topic of vital importance, particularly for the hygiene-sensitive medical sector: To what extent can building components promote the air purity of these types of workplaces by eliminating so-called air-borne microbial contaminations? Hygiene consultant or architect, developer or building manager: with Humancare, you have already begun minimising the risk of hospital infection in the planning phase by using suitable building materials!

Battles against many harmful substances at onceOWAcoustic® AirControl combats harmful substances in the air such as ammonia, formaldehyde, triethylamine and nicotine – simultaneously. Dangers presented by air pollutants are continuously minimised, and the quality of air is significantly improved. The system can therefore help to avoid health complaints caused by poisonous substances in the atmosphere – the so-called “sick building syndrome”. The effectiveness of OWAcoustic® AirControl is proven, and attested by test certificates.
Fresh air + a fresh lookOWAcoustic® AirControl “works” permanently, without wearing itself out or yellowing. The ceiling stays functional and retains its colour. The result: a lastingly better atmosphere, lasting freshness, a lastingly bright, fresh, friendly design.
Built-in catalyserOWAcoustic® AirControl works on a proven principle. The surface of the mineral tile contains a catalyst. This converts more than 50% of olfactory harmful and odorous substances contained in the area air into hygienically harmless materials. The catalytic process works permanently and doesn’t degrade over time. Against other air cleaning products the effect is independent on daylight or other sources of light. OWAcoustic® AirControl produces fresh air even over night.
– Adsorption of the pollutant molecules in the area air by the surface of the OWAcoustic® AirControl ceiling tiles
– Catalytic reduction of the pollutants to hygienically and harmless final products
– After the chemical reaction the catalyst goes back to its original condition. So it isn’t exhausted.
Certified: sure and reliablePractical examination by the Danish institute Eurofins confirmed: OWAcoustic® AirControl reduces relevant toxicological and olfactory-active substances in the area air by more than 50%. In a 14-day testing programme in which the tiles were continuously exposed to the selected representative substances nicotine, ammonia, formaldehyde and triethylamine, OWAcoustic® AirControl lowered the respective concentrations by more than half. OWAcoustic® AirControl can therefore significantly improve the purity of air quality.
More than fresh air: a ceiling systemOWAcoustic® premium ceiling systems are multi-functional. They can reduce sound and improve area acoustics, are resistant to moisture and increase the levels of fire protection.

The contamination of products and produc-tion processes through airborne particles is monitored to a certain, appropriate level in clean rooms and the associated clean room areas. The aerospace, microelectronics, phar-maceutical and food industries in particular use such clean rooms for sensitive production processes.
Building materials for clean rooms are the-refore subject to special requirements with regard to air purity – which is expressed in a minimum emission of airborne particles. According to DIN EN ISO 14644-1, maximum limits are defined, which our OWAcoustic® clean ceilings comply with in six out of nine classes (ISO classes 4 – 9). This means these ceilings are suitable for use in many clean room areas. Please see the following overview:

Air purity in clean rooms
DIN EN ISO 14644-1
DIN EN ISO 14644-1 deals exclusively with particle purity in the air. It is part of standard 14644, which in turn is part of a series standards and codes (e.g. EG-GMP code) that deal with contamination control in clean rooms. Furthermore, other requirements exist with regard to temperature, pressure and moisture in clean rooms and also with regard to the planning, operation and monitoring of clean rooms.
In individual cases, supplementary and/or restrictive specifications may be imposed by the responsible legislative bodies, which in turn may necessitate additional tests. The test illustrated in this brochure relates exclusively to the particulate emissions behaviour of OWAcoustic® clean tiles.

OWAcoustic® clean – the mineral wool ceiling tiles from the OWAcoustic® product line that are laminated with high-quality aluminium foil. These tiles have a smooth surface, which helps to prevent airborne particles from attacking them.
In order to classify the OWAcoustic® clean tiles, the Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart conducted extensive tests. The measurements were carried out in a class 1 clean room (according to DIN ISO 14644-1) – this means that in a reference volume of one cubic metre, only two particles with a size of 0.2 μm may be found.
In order to simulate the daily exposure values, which are to be expected during normal use, as closely as possible, a bass loudspeaker was used that stimulated the ceiling tiles with a sine wave of f = 50 Hz. An optical particle counter was used to check the emission behaviour of the ceiling.
Tile contact surfaces, ceiling mounting component and connections to adjoining components must be sealed in accordance with specifications. A closed-cell, ray-cross-linked polyethylene foam tape should be used as sealing tape – dimensions 3 x 9 mm, self-adhesive on one side (no. 8900). All OWAcoustic® clean tiles should be equipped with hold down clips (no. 819) on the rear. The wall perimeter should be installed with angle

All OWAcoustic® clean ceilings passed the test requirements to achieve the qualification “Class 4 according to DIN EN ISO 14644-1 (class 10 according to the US Federal Standard 209E)”. This result was also achieved by the unperforated version (L0) of the OWAtecta® metal ceiling (System S 31).
Universal 65/1 in system S 3 also provides extremely good sound absorption thanks to its slight perforations.
profile no. 57, wall spring clip no. 5210 and the sealing mentioned below. In the event that the ceiling will be under pressure, the ceiling may not exceed a maximum, continuous under or overpressure of 40 Pa. Nonius hangers must be used for the purpose of suspension. The quality of the sealing measures will depend on the amount of care taken by the fitter.
Testing with and without a draught-sealDue to the different requirements in clean rooms, various measurements were carried out where the tile contact surface did not include any additional sealing measures, and also where the tile contact surface was sealed with foam tape and an acrylic sealant. Both versions fulfilled the requirements to reach class 4.
Sealing measures should be carried above all in areas with specific requirements regarding the cleaning of the ceilings, such as in the food industry, and also in the event of requirements regarding under and overpressure of the ceiling.
Note:The use of sealing materials can result in a change to the building material classification according to DIN EN 13501-1. The type of draught-seal used must be adjusted in line with the utilisation requirements of the clean room in question. Sealing tape and acrylic draught-seals are not required if the only demand relates to particulate emissions behaviour.

Suspension system:Where the ceiling is subject to extreme levels of humidity it is recommended that OWAconstruct® corrosion resistant suspension system S 3e is used.
Note:When the surrounding conditions can cause condensation on the tile surface, we recommend using closed metal cassettes from the OWAtecta® product line.
Cleaning:The surface of the tile can be vacuum cleaned using a soft brush attachment and/or cleaned with a damp OWA sponge.
Emissions:The “Blue Angel” eco label is awarded to low-emission suspended ceilings which, in addition to fulfilling legal requirements, are also viewed as non-hazardous with regard to residential hygiene. An independent review was carried out by the company RAL gGmbH, Sankt Augustin.
