APRIL 28, 2019: DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
He Has Us In Mind
He has you in mind. Do we think about that much? The God of the universe has us in mind, individually as persons and together as one
human family. We hear this truth in today’s Gospel story of Thomas. His doubt is likely familiar to us by now. “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into
his side, I will not believe.”
Jesus is God. He could have risen any way he wanted. He could have risen perfectly healed, as a further sign of his power over death and suffering. But when Thomas encounters him, we see what Jesus chose. “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” In
resurrecting his body, Jesus already has Thomas in mind. Jesus retains his wounds for Thomas, for the disciples, and for all who would doubt the sacrificial power of love. This intentional love of Jesus is echoed by John and his disciples, who authored this Gospel. “Jesus did many other signs...these are written that you may come to believe
that Jesus is the Christ...and that through this belief you may have life in his name.“
From its earliest beginnings, the Church knew the power of sign and story. When they wrote the Gospels, they had us in mind. We are all Thomas from time to time. We need to see the mercy of God lived and real in our lives. This can happen throughout the circumstances of our daily comings and goings. It can also happen through meditating on the Scripture, through placing ourselves in the stories and listening to God’s voice speaking. We
don’t get to see what the disciples got to see, but we know, through them, that God always has us in mind. As he reminds the disciples, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Saint Jerome School Now that we have entered the Easter season, I am
reminded of a great quote from Saint John Paul II, “Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are an Easter people, and hallelujah is our song!”
At our parish school we are emphasizing that while
Easter is indeed a season of the Church, the Paschal mystery that defines this Holy season does not come and go, it is omnipresent. This is what Saint John
Paul II was declaring; the Paschal mystery is a part of our lives every single day. The human condition is such that we face setbacks, loss, pain, and
suffering each and every day throughout our lives. Nowhere is it more apparent than during the course of observing the four seasons and throughout the
experiences of an academic calendar. Summer is filled with sunshine, beach days, school vacation, and backyard barbecues. As the school
year begins it’s the end of the summer and the beginning of fall. Winter comes and brings the cold, snow, and shorter days. All around us the growth of
plant life stops. But, as we see before us today, spring arrives and there’s new life all around us. Flowers emerge through the thawing ground, and leaves begin to appear on empty branches. The
process of dying and rising is with us every year. The academic calendar of a school year also reveals the Paschal mystery at work in our lives. There’s an
energy and vibrancy as a new school year begins. Teachers are excited to get back to doing what they love. Students are diligent about doing their work,
making a good impression on their new teachers, and they're focused and energized. That energy ebbs and flows as the school year progresses. Students do
poorly on a test, it’s a temporary setback; they study, focus, work hard, and rise by doing better on the next test. In witnessing athletic contests, teams
lose a game, next week they come back and win their next game. Each day of a school year presents all of these smaller “deaths” and “resurrections.”
The foundation of our school is that we are a faith-based school community. Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection, His victory over darkness and death
empowers us to fight through our tough times. His dying and rising brings hope into our lives, and it strengthens our willingness to be empathetic and
compassionate with other people. We are an Easter people!
Happy Easter to you and your families! With great respect and regards, Mr. J. A. Hauser

Faith Community Nursing
Addictions Addiction involves changes in the functioning of the brain and body. Genetic risks factors account for about half of the likelihood that an individual will develop
addiction. Like diabetes, cancer and heart disease, addiction is caused by a combination of behavioral, environmental and biological factors. If
left untreated over time, it becomes more severe, disabling and life threatening. Some people think addiction cannot be a disease because it is caused by
an individual’s choice to use drugs or alcohol. While the first use may be by choice, once the brain has been changed by addiction, most experts believe that
the person loses control of their behavior. Heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer involve personal choices like diet, exercise and sun
exposure. A disease is what happens in the body as a result of those choices. Once the brain has been changed by addiction, that choice or willpower
becomes impaired. Perhaps the most defining symptom of addiction is a loss of control over substance use.
