Shakespeare was probably trying to warn the people of becoming too selfish/ power-hungry. They did not feel King James should be the king. He was no more directly the next heir than a few more of her relatives. So Macbeth represented what would happen if people were to become murderous for power. I’d say it was pretty effective.
