Theprojecthadtwokeyaims:
Firstly,tomakeadifferenceandcreatebetterchancesfortheaspiringBMEartists,throughtraining,confidencebuilding,anddevelopingculturalworkshopstoimprovecommunitycohesionandintegration.Secondly,tohelpbuildstrongerandhealthiercommunities,workingdirectlywithover1300participants,raisingtheirawarenessandappreciationofdiversityandsharedvaluesamongstcommunitymembers.

CaseStudyOne:BMEArtist-SudeshnaChattopadhyay
Sudeshna came to theproject lacking confidence inherownability andwith aphobiaofspeakingtolargegroups.Welookedatherartistictalentsandencouragedhertoconsiderhow to use these to explore global learning through ART. Copmanthorpe Primary Year 6pupilsweredoing anAustralian topic andwanted Sudeshna touseher Indianprinting tothen explore Australian art. On the 1st February, she delivered two workshops with thesupportofthefacilitators.BoththeschoolandSudeshnaweredelightedwiththeoutcomesbothart-wiseandunderstandinglinkedwithIndianprinting.Sudeshna’sprojectevaluationclearlyshowsshegained:

KNOWLEDGE:Howanarttechniquecanbeadaptedtodifferentthemes.Learningtobeversatileandflexible.

Shealsoreportedtheadditionalbenefitofhavingimprovedchances:

Day(currentTopic).ChildrenlearnedsomeofthehistoryofIndianprinting,hadhands-onexperiencewithprintingmaterials,andcreatedtheirownprint.Theworkshopworkedwellasitguidedthechildrenthroughcreatingtheirownprint.Itwaswellpresentedandthechildrenenjoyedthesession.’
Theyoungpeoplewhoaccessedtheworkshopsaid:

ShrikantisatalenteddancerandwantedtheopportunitytodevelopworkshopsanddelivertheseintheYorkandsurroundingareas.HewantedtoexploreDiversityandSustainabilitysolookedatwater,seasonsandIndianmusiclinkedwithBollywood.HealreadyhadexperienceofworkingwithallagesandjumpedatthechanceofdeliveringadanceworkshoptopupilsatApplefieldsSpecialSchoolinYork.Shrikant’sprojectevaluationshoweddevelopmentofstrongercommunities:‘TheprojecthasbeenverybeneficialincreatingnewcreativepasturesforyoungpeopleintheschoolsofYork.TheschoolsofYorkhaveverylessexposuretothediversityofculturesfromSouthAsia.MyinputintheprojecthasbeensouthAsiandanceandcreativemovementandhowsuchauniquedanceformcanbuildconfidenceandalsoboostpositivityandconfidenceinyoungpeople.Throughadifferentculturalexposureyoungpeoplewereabletofocusandworkasateamtopresentadancepresentationthatwasfulfillingaswellasenjoyable.’
HepersonallyrecordedachangeinpupilattitudesinYorkandfelttheworkshopscontributedtocommunitycohesion.Hereported:
‘Hence,ithasbeenrewardingformetoteachthemnewcreativedancemovementsinafunandenjoyableway.Bylearningsomethingnewandfromadifferentculturehasenabledthemtofocuscohesivelyandgaintremendousconfidenceintheirdancingskills.

Andithasalsoinitiatedyoungpeopletoenjoydanceeveniftheylackedconfidenceindanceactivities.’
Applefield’steachersandSENpupilsthoroughlyenjoyedtheworkshopsfromwhichtheyareoftenexcludedandwanted:
‘ThestudentstoexperienceBollywoodstyledancingandtolearnafewsteps.Thentogiveanopiniononwhethertheylikeditornot.’
Onceagain,theworkshopscored10outof10andprovidedApplefieldsyoungpeoplewith:
‘Theexperiencewasgreatandcarefullymeasured,sothatallthestudents,acrosstherangeofabilities,tookahappyandactivepart.Nearlyallthestudentssaidafterwardthattheyhadreallyenjoyedit’.

BecauseYazihadherowncar,shecouldtaketheglobalworkshopstosomeareasaroundYork.ShewenttoKirbyhillPrimary,whowantedtheirpupilstogainmuchneededunderstandingandexperienceothercultures.TheschoolfeltthattheworkshopallowedthemtoknowmoreabouttheMuslimCulture,withpupilsandstaffbeingabletowearthehijabandotherclothesaswellashearanotherlanguage.Again,herworkshopstendedtoscore10outof10forallareas!ShehasusedherconfidenceandcookingexperiencetodevelopaspicerangeandtooffermoreworkshopstogroupsthroughoutNorthYorkshire.
