Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
We hear the Beatitudes proclaimed in today’s gospel. The text is so familiar, it is easy for our thoughts to drift off and not really hear what Christ is saying. Take some time this week to reflect on these Beati-tudes. Is there one beatitude that you need to focus on that will enrich your living as a disciple of Christ? Put your trust in him to help you have that beatitude attitude!
Dear Friends, You may have read in last week’s Pilot about
the sudden passing of Boston Auxiliary Bishop Emeri-tus Walter J. Edyvean. Father Robert O’Grady penned an insightful obituary and noted that a report on the Bishop’s funeral would run in this weekend’s edition. My first priestly assignment was St. Patrick’s in Na-tick. Bishop Edyvean was then the Auxiliary Bishop for the West Region and lived at St. Patrick’s. In fact, he continued to live there after his retirement. We be-came friends during the three years that we lived in the same house. Interestingly however, it was in the years since I left St. Patrick’s that our friendship grew deeper on many levels.
The bishop was modest and his personality was reserved, almost bashful. Such attributes are rare for a bishop. He was a brilliant student and hence chosen for advanced studies in Rome shortly after his ordination. He spent many years teaching sacramental theology at St. John’s Seminary before being called to Rome and the Holy See’s Congregation for Education. His profi-ciency with languages, innate intelligence and exten-sive learning were put at the service of the Universal Church until he returned to our Archdiocese in 2001 as Auxiliary Bishop. It was however, his gentle nature and genuine concern for others that endeared him to seminarians, brother priests, academics, parishioners and his friends during almost 55 years of priesthood.
In the face of media reports that can discourage Catholics it is helpful to be reminded that God occa-sionally raises up men and women of extraordinary gifts to serve his Church. While Bishop Edyvean will be sorely missed, I and his many friends and col-leagues will always be grateful for the gift of his friendship.
Yours in Christ,
Father Tom
Bishop Walter J. Edyvean

OFFERTORY - WEEK FEBRUARY 10, 2019
$5,859 Thank you for your continued support.
As you are aware, there are multi-ple locations where the roof on St John’s Church has been “leaking” for quite some time. We are fortu-nate that we have a world leading
manufacturer in roofing systems located in Canton. Thanks to Brian Whelan, the executive VP of roofing sys-tems at Sika Sarnafil Corporation, we have had their en-gineering division working closely with us in testing the existing roof system to determine how we can repair and replace the existing failed roof. Brian happens to be a St John’s School alumnus and a St Gerard’s’ parishion-er, and has taken a personal interest in making sure we receive the best advice.
The existing roof, constructed in 1962 was a tar and gravel roof. This original roof is still in place. In re-cent years, a two inch thick layer of insulation was placed over this tar and gravel roof and a rubber roof membrane attached over the insulation. Over the years, this rubber roof and associated flashing has failed due to lack of maintenance and damage from manually shovel-ing snow off the roof. The existing insulation is wet, and is trapped under temporary roofing repairs. In order to remove and install a new roof sys-tem, the existing roof needs to be able to “pass” certain minimum tests for strength so that a new roof will be resistant to strong winds. Over the past few months, weather permitting we have tested at least four different methods for installing the new roof. All tests have failed. We are now waiting for more favorable weather and temperatures to try one more method. Short of that suc-ceeding, we will be faced with replacing the roof in its entirety. Once we have an engineering solution from Sika Sarnafil, we will be receiving bids from their list of certified roofing contractors and Fr. Tom will be able to present you with the financial and time requirements needed to solve this critical issue. UPDATE:
Currently we have examined the “leak” in the main church roof. I have had the expertise of Wayne Bethoney assisting. We have determined that the issue is condensation over the metal deck. Until the roof and in-sulation is replaced, this will remain an ongoing problem. Gregory L. Pando, Director of Facilities and Operations

On January 30, 1837 Father James Smythe, a Boston priest who was traveling to Canton to celebrate Mass once a month, wrote a report to the Bishop stating that there were now over 100 Catholics in Canton and that they were eager for a church and graveyard of their own. Based on this report, Bishop Fenwick of the Archdiocese of Boston, approved the purchase of land for the church and cemetery in Canton.

SCHOOL NOTES! St. John School provides a high quality education for all students. This is particularly seen in our mid-dle school, where we prepare students to enter into the high school of their choice and receive large amounts of scholarship aid. Some students at St. John School end up paying less or a comparable amount at a Catholic High School because of the quality and rigorous education their receive in our middle school. St. John School 8th graders have started to receive their high school acceptances. Did you know that St. John School 8th graders had a 100% acceptance rate at Catholic High Schools? These students were offered more than $100,000 in scholarships per year! That adds up to over $400,000 over their high school career. Congratulations to our students and thank you to BC High, Xaverian, Fontbonne, Archbishop Williams, Bishop Feehan, Cardinal Spellman, and Notre Dame. Independent school ac-ceptances come out in early March and we expect to hear great news from St. Sebastian, Dexter, Thayer, Milton Academy, and Ursuline Come and visit our Middle School! It fully prepares students for any high school they choose (and may save you a lot of money in the long run)!
