CAGA TIÓ!
Tió de Nadal
• The Tió de Nadal is a traditional Catalonian festivity that takes place on the night of 24 December and gives girls and boys presents.
The origins of Tió
• This tradition dates back centuries and was initially linked to nature, fertility and the winter
solstice.
Traditionally:
• The Tió was initially just a trunk of wood that would be burned in the house. The trunk gave cherished presents such as light, heat, etc. In its symbolic form it gives walnuts, torrons, etc, as the tradition has evolved over time. It is now used by girls and boys who receive much more extravagant gifts than when the tradition started.
THE TRADITION TODAYThe Caga Tió takes place on the night of 24 December, although it may happen earlier in schools.
• You have to start feeding the Tió from 1 December until 24 December night each year.
• On the evening of 24 December, it is covered with a blanket and a box and while the Tió is being prepared, you have to go and pray. When you have finished praying, you have to hit the Tió with a stick and when you finish you sing the special song to make the Tió shit out the presents. The types of presents are: :
• Toys• Chocolate and
sweets• For children who
haven’t good, sweet coal
The Tió placed next to the Chirstmas tree
