Message from the Rector P. 2 In the 50+ years since the Second Vatican Council, which restored the Order of the Diaconate as a permanent state (in the Middle Ages, the diaconate of the ancient Church had been reduced to merely the transitional state before ordination to the priesthood), there has been much writing about and questioning of the identity of the deacon. The scripture passage most famously associated with the ministry of deacons is that of Acts 6:1-7 when seven men are chosen by the Apostles for special service to the Greek-speaking widows of the community. This passage of origin, along with the definition of the word diakonos (servant) has led many to see the deacon as a servant of charity. For this reason, deacons in our Archdiocese are assigned a local charitable ministry in addition to their routine ministry in parishes. However, the Rite of Ordination points out that in addition to ministry of charity, the deacon helps bishops and priests in the ministry of the word and altar. This is why at the celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy, the deacon has preeminence in the proclamation of the Gospel, even before the other ordained ministers. He also assists the Bishop or Priest at the altar in preparing the Eucharistic Sacrifice. In fact, while the deacon is indeed a servant in the image of Christ who “came not to be served but to serve” (Mk 10:45), his diakonia is more dynamic than this. All baptized Christians have received the call to serve, just as all Christians have been baptized as priests. But the word diakonos also carries the connotation of emissary or envoy – one who represents another. In this, we find the heart of the ordained diaconate: the one who is first and foremost the emissary of Christ, but also ordained to act as an emissary of the Bishop (and even of the pastor) in word and charity. Ultimately in his actions, whether in proclamation of the Word of God, service at the altar, or in charitable outreach, he is an emissary of Christ and the Church showing that the Kingdom of God is at hand. Please join me in praying for Joe Millhouse (and Wendy, his partner on the journey) as he prepares, as well as for all of our deacons at the Co-Cathedral as they share their beautiful ministry of diakonia with all of us.
January 31, 2021 Diakonia Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Anh chị em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô: Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo: “Beloved brothers and sisters: since this our son, who is your relative and friend, is now to be advanced to the Order of Deacon, consider carefully the nature of the rank in the Church to which he is about to be raised. Strengthened by the gift of the Holy Spirit, he will help the Bishop and his Priests in the ministry of the word, of the altar, and of charity, showing himself to be a servant of all. As a minister of the altar, he will proclaim the Gospel, prepare the Sacrifice, and distribute the Lord’s Body and Blood to the faithful. Furthermore, it will be his duty, at the Bishop’s direction, to exhort believers and unbelievers alike and to instruct them in holy doctrine. He will preside over public prayer, administer Baptism, assist at and bless Marriages, bring Viaticum to the dying, and conduct funeral rites. Consecrated by the laying on of hands that comes down to us from the Apostles and bound more closely to the service of the altar, he will perform works of charity in the name of the Bishop or the pastor. With the help of God, he is to go about all these duties in such a way that you will recognize him as a disciple of Him who came not to be served but to serve.” (Rite of Ordination of One Deacon) During my absence during vacation, I invited Joe Millhouse to use this space to re-introduce himself to the parish community and share some thoughts as he prepares to be ordained to the diaconate. That ordination was scheduled to take place this weekend but has now been postponed three weeks (now Friday, February 19) due to COVID precautions among the community of candidates and their wives. Nonetheless, I would like to share this week what I was prepared to share at the brink of Joe’s ordination which will remain just as true three weeks from now.
Yours in Christ,
Very Reverend Jeffrey L. Bame Rector & Parish Administrator

Stewardship Reflection How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide everything you need. Try this – use the word “pray” instead of the
word “worry” in the future. Then pray for things instead of worrying about them.

¿Has venido a acabar con nosotros?
