Plan a Party Notes to Teacher: In this project, students will use real world mathema5cal and logical thinking to plan a birthday party with a budget of $100. You may choose to use the pricelist provide, or you may provide students with party planning catalogs or Internet access depending on their ability. I have included several op5ons for how you might use this project depending on your students or the amount of 5me you have. Op@on 1—Math Only (Pages 2, 3, 4, 5) With this op5on, students will simply plan the party without the addi5on of any crea5ve or ar5s5c op5ons. This is great if you have limited math 5me or plan to do this project solely as a whole class. Op@on 2—Math and Scrapbook (Pages 2, 3, 4, 6, 7) With this op5on, students will plan the party and design a simple scrapbook page based on the party plans. This is great if you have designated 5me for giCed students or if you have ar5s5c students. You may also choose to add this op5on for early finishers while the majority of the class just does Op5on 1. You can also include this for extra credit or a fun homework assignment. Op@on 3—Math and Extended Final Project (Pages 2, 3, 4, 8) With this op5on, students will plan the party and present it to the class in a crea5ve way. I used this op5on when I had “enrichment” 5me built into my schedule. Students may complete the math at school and the presenta5on at home. It is very open ended so students can choose a variety of outcomes as long as they follow the rubric. Great for giCed students, ar5s5c students, and students who like to go the extra mile. Again, you may choose to make this extra credit or simply for early finishers.

Party Planning There is a lot of math involved in planning a party, and planning a party also requires you to use your thinking skills. Here are some things to think about when planning your party. Remember that there are many things to consider other than price. For instance, store-‐bought cupcakes cost more but will save you 5me. Also, there are some games that you can play for free. Can you think of any? Feel free to record other considera5ons on another sheet of paper. 1. What is the theme of your party? _______________________________ 2. How many people will aUend? _________________________________ 3. What beverages will you serve? ________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 4. What foods and snacks will you serve? __________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 5. What desserts will you serve? _________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 6. Did you decide to do homemade or store-‐bought? Why did you choose that op5on? ________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________ 7. Will you give a goody bag? If so what is in it? If not, explain your thinking. ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ 8. Will you play party games? If so which ones? _____________________ ______________________________________________________________

Party Supplies Your parents finally put their trust in you to plan your own birthday party. You have $100 to spend, and you can’t go over your budget. How many people you invite is up to you, but you must be a good host and provide dessert, snacks, and drinks to each guest. All other items are op5onal. Below is a list of common party supplies. Review the list carefully because some items are priced per individual item while others are priced per set or pack. You do not have to use every item on this list. Only choose what you would like. Remember, this is YOUR party. Make it unique and fun! You may certainly use items that are not on this list. Be crea5ve! To determine the price, you can make a reasonable es5mate or even look at a real party supplies catalog.

Party Planning Table Use this table to help you plan your party. When you choose your items, always keep in mind the number of guests that will aUend. For example, if there are 10 guests, but plates come in packs of 8, how many packs will you have to buy? If you said 2, you are correct because you can’t have 2 guests with no plates! Other things to consider might be: will you need plates for cake and for snacks? What if people drop their plates or cups? How many extras should you provide?
