Elizabeth GoldmanLibrary Services Director
Burbank Public Library launched its first strategic plan in July 2017. This plan will guide our service over the next few years, helping us become more responsive and adaptable while supporting our mission to connect the community with opportunities for growth, inspiration and discovery. Areas of focus include improvements to technology, space and community engagement while maintaining strong customer service, a diverse collection, and a suite of programming for all ages.
Since July, our staff has been hard at work determining what steps we will take this year to help move toward our l ong-term goals. Ten committees, made up of the majority of the staff, have been researching and proposing action items and timelines that will result in positive changes to the experience for all of you who use the library.

Here are a few things to keep an eye out for this year:• Many opportunities to provide feedback – on library services generally, on the future of the Central Library, on priorities for programs and
services, and on your experiences as a user• The rollout of new partnerships that enhance service, such as the BConnectED program with Burbank Unified School District• Continued development of staff’s ability to manage effectively the wide variety of users sharing limited space – to provide opportunities for
both quiet study and group work at the library and to provide proactive assistance to those whose mental illness, addictions and/or struggles with homelessness create disruptions in our buildings
• Thanks to a grant from the California State Library, we will also be able to assess the first floor space at the Central Library and purchase some new, more modern and moveable furniture to make the library a better space for study and learning
For more details on our plans, visit https://burbanklibrary.org/about/planning or contact us via our website or by visiting any branch.

September Snapshots
Distinguished film critic David Thomson spoke about his new book, Warner Bros:
The Making of an American Movie Studio, to a crowd of approximately 200 at the Buena Vista Branch Library
Everyone had a great time at the Fairy Tale Book Party at the Central Library. Kids and parents made shields, dragons and
catapults. There was even a princess who pulled a sword from a stone!
Over 200 people got crafty at our Outside the Lines – Projects in the Park program at the Northwest Branch Library. The kids
painted their very own ceramic banks, made paper-bag windsocks, colored face masks and made a nature craft.
The outdoor screening of Sing was a huge success at the Buena Vista Branch. A crowd of 134 snuggled under blankets on a cool night and enjoyed the whole experience.

T E E N R E A D M O N T H
WRITING CHALLENGE For TEENS in Grades 6-12
October 2-30, 2017!
STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND
YOU are an alien shapeshifter who has just landed on Planet Earth, on one of the seven continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceana, Europe, North America, or South America. It is your choice whether to land in a city, in the country, or in the wilderness. You have no weapons,
and are not an invading force; rather, you have come to blend in and find out what you can about the intelligent life form(s) on this planet. You spend some time here, interacting with others. Tell us a story about your experience.
HERE are the important parameters: You may write a shorter story of 750 to 1,000 words, OR a longer one of 2,000 to 3,000 words. The number of words will be strictly enforced, and stories that do not comply will be disqualified, so use your word counter!
You must send in your story by Monday, October 30 at 5:00 p.m. Attach a document or paste your story into an email and send it to [email protected]. DOUBLE SPACE YOUR TEXT. USE LAYOUT SUGGESTIONS AT RIGHT.
PRIZES will be awarded for the top stories in each category (short and long).
Winning writers will be announced on Thursday, November 9, at
BOOK CAFÉ. 7:00 p.m. @ BUENA VISTA BRANCH
(There will be book-talking, too!)
