Strange But True by Samantha Weaver• The fi rst chocolate factory in the United States was established even before the states were united. Back in 1765, two enterprising men named John Hanan and James Baker chose Dorchester, Mass., as the site for their factory, which they mechanized by using waterpower.• Interestingly, the word “pudding” came into the English language from the German word “puddek,” which means “sausage.”

• You might be sur-prised to learn that the given name of iconic Apache leader Geronimo, Goyathlay, translates as “one who yawns.” And the very name Apache isn’t what the tribe originally called itself; it’s word from the Zuni Indian language, and it means “enemy.”• For six generations, many members of the Fu-gate family of the Appala-chian region of Kentucky have suffered from a rare blood disorder called met-hemoglobinemia. The dis-order seems to have no adverse health effects, but it’s not at all diffi cult to di-agnose it at a glance: Suf-ferers have blue skin. Not just a slight tinge, either; various family members have been described as “blue as Lake Louise,” “the bluest woman I ever saw” and “almost purple.”©2012 King Features

HOW TO KEEP KIDSENTERTAINED ALL
SUMMER LONG Summer vacation often starts with high expecta-tions. Childr en ar e excited about the pr ospect of fun days outdoors playing with friends, while par ents anx-iously await relaxing months without the r esponsibilities of school and extracur ricu-lar clubs. But once summer vacation ar rives and the fi rst few days have passed, parents often fi nd that the litany of cheers and giggles transform into a chorus of “I’m bored.” Many activities that come to mind tend to be expensive, so if cutting costs is a priority , par ents might need to think outside the box to come up with en-tertaining ideas that won’t break the bank.
CampSummer camp is a popular way for kids to spend their summers, but many camps are expensive. The Ameri-can Camp Association has found that overnight camps can cost anywher e fr om $325 to $780 a week. Day camp fees may be $100 to $275 per week. Parents who send their children to camp for an entir e season might pay anywhere from $3,000 to $9,000 for the seven- to nine-week pr ogram. Par ents looking for an alternative to
costly camps should consid-er local programs that offer summer activities. Librar-ies, schools and childcar e centers may have programs that run the length of sum-mer and ar e considerably less expensive than mor e formal camps. A YMCA or even a swim club may also put together activities. Par-ents whose childr en attend afterschool spor ting class-es, such as karate or soccer, may fi nd that the or ganiza-tions of fer a camp or sum-mer program.
Day TripsIf a parent is off for the sum-mer, then day trips may be a possibility . Schedule a few day trips to different locations that the kids ar e excited to see. Newspapers routinely print “Go See It” or “Just Go” listings that highlight local events. The family can gather ar ound the table and decide which outings would be inter est-ing and then mark them on the calendar. Some par ents purchase season passes to amusement parks and take the kids several times over the summer. In either case, bring snacks and lunch from home when possible to keep costs in check.
Kid SwapChances ar e many of your neighbors ar e also facing the same dif fi culties as
they tr y to fi nd ways for kids to spend their summer afternoons. Parents can get together and set up a sched-ule for entertaining the kids. For example, one parent is responsible for the whole lot one day , while the next day another par ent takes a turn. This gives parents the opportunity to take a br eak from par ental r esponsibili-ties and enjoy some quiet time. And for the childr en, time spent in a pool, watch-ing movies, playing video games, or riding bikes is often mor e enjoyable with friends in tow.
Fun ProjectsChildren often want to feel useful, and may enjoy the responsibility of some easy tasks in and ar ound the house -- so long as the tasks are fun. Washing the car with a hose and a bucket of sudsy water is a fun way to cool off
during the hot summer days and get a chor e done. While parents should not expect a perfect job, they can r est as-sured that the kids will have at least an hour of fun in the sun and water . Set aside a patch of the yar d that chil-dren can tur n into their own personal gardens. Encourage digging in this ar ea and pr o-vide seeds or seedling plants as well as kid-sized gar den-ing tools. Each day the kids can check on the progress of their gar dens. Some home-improvement and craft stores sponsor fr ee lear ning activi-ties for children. They can be held in the mor ning or after-noon and will teach inter est-ing skills that can be put to use again at home. Summer vacations are soon to ar rive, and par ents can be ar med with a list of enjoyable -- yet inexpensive -- ways to keep kids busy.

Kes Won’t Stop Believing
After watching him win the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega on May 6, Roger Penske said of Brad Keselowski, “Obvi-ously, one of the goals in my life is to sit up on that stage (as Sprint Cup champion) in ... Las Vegas, and I think he’s the guy who can make it happen.
“This year, hopefully.”Penske, one of American
motorsports’ preeminent fig-ures, has seen drivers in his employ win 15 Indianapolis 500s and championships in a variety of forms of racing. He’s never won a Sprint Cup championship, though. Until May 6, he had never won at Talladega Superspeedway.
Keselowski, winning for the second time this year and sixth in his career, could do for Penske what Rusty Wal-lace, Bobby Allison, Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman and others could not. Keselows-ki finished fifth in the Chase last year.
“At Talladega, you don’t take a thing for granted,” Keselowski, 28, said. “Not
a thing, because you don’t know what’s going to hap-pen. I didn’t take for granted that we had this race won, no.”
In the third turn of the final lap, Keselowski, who had surged to the lead on the next-to-last lap, managed
to get his Dodge separated from Kyle Busch’s Toyota. His winning margin, 0.304 of a second, was comfort-able by Talladega standards.
Keselowski was careful not to read too much into the
victory.“You know, Daytona and
Talladega are only four rac-es on our circuit,” he said. “How many races are we going to do? Thirty-eight, with the (Budweiser Shoot-out) and the (Sprint All-Star Race). ... There are a lot of
races. You’ve got to be good at all of them to be cham-pion.”
Keselowski won the Nationwide Series title in 2010.
“You just don’t know,” he
added. “You’ve just got to keep pushing, moving for-ward. The second you think you have become a champi-on, everybody else evolves in this sport and gets ahead of you.
“It’s a never-ending jour-ney.”

Though Brad Keselowski won at Talladega, the driver says he’s got a lot of races to go, and he’s “got to be good at all of them to be champion.” (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)

HE LIGHTS THE WAYRead: John 10:7-10
I am the door. If anyone enters by Me,he will be saved. —John 10:9
Old Testament scholar Sir George Adam Smith says that when he visited the Holy Land he came upon a shepherd and his sheep standing before a stockade. There was no door in that protective enclosure, only an opening the width of a man’s body.Smith asked the shepher d why ther e was no door , and he explained: “I am the way in. I stand in the open-ing, and the sheep pass under me into the stockade. When they are all safely inside, I lie down across that opening. No thief can get in and no sheep can get out except over my body. I am the entrance.”We ar e like sheep who need a Shepher d (1 Peter 2:25). For entrance into heaven, a place of eter nal bliss, Jesus gave this amazing claim: “I am the door of the sheep. . . . If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved” (John 10:7-9). The people listening to Him that day didn’t think of a wooden gate swinging on hinges. They understood that He was r eally saying, “I am the entrance into the homeland of God.” He could claim to be the way into that eter nal blessed-ness, the exclusive way into God’s glory, because He is the incarnate Son of God.Jesus is the only way into heaven (John 14:6). W e gain entrance only by putting our faith in Him.
Come to the Savior, make no delay—Here in His Word He’s shown us the way;
Here in our midst He’s standing today,Tenderly saying, “Come!” —Root
There are many ways to hell, but only one way to heaven.

SIMPLIFY If there ever was a stereotype of easy pho-tography, it was Grandma with her 126 camera and flash cubes taking square pictures on 126 film. Don’t laugh, Kodak sold a lot of that stuff. We still get calls for people wanting reprints of Grandma’s negatives that they found in a draw-er somewhere. Then came the digital age and for some tak-ing pictures did not seem as easy as it was when 110 and 126 film were around. And while digi-tal cameras are in some sense easy to use, as we said in a back column, it is easy to get over-whelmed. At this year’s photo show, which is like the auto show that is going on in New York right now, Fuji introduced 19 new cameras. Surpise. Someone out there is listening. Several of the digital cameras are very easy to use with very few buttons. The leader of the new Fuji line is the 5X zoom camera. This is like having a 200mm lens in 35mm terms. Added to this is a 14 mega pixel sensor and rechargeable battery plus an almost 3” LCD screen on the back. The main thing is that there are few buttons to confuse you. Zoom, shoot, and press the button on the back to see what you have. All for a little over $100, every-thing you need to take and get into digital pho-tography. The next model up is an 8X zoom. A more powerful lens to bring things closer with 14 mega pixels, automatic antishake, automatic scene recognition, and with the simplified back with no fuss. These new cameras are very slim and come with case, card, USB cord, battery, and charger for just a few dollars higher in price than the 5X zoom, but still bargain priced. We said it before but it’s true, in digital, fea-tures go up and the price goes down. All of these cameras are light years ahead of what was out just a very few years ago. My friend, Joe, sent me an article from the Pitts-burgh paper the other day telling about the Mt. Lebanon Camera Club. It is 127 years old and is the oldest camera club in the country. Our New Castle Camera Club is celebrating 40 years this year. So there are still people out there who are serious enough about taking pictures to belong to a camera club. I did read that by 2014, they say half of all pic-tures will be taken on telephones. I also read that 5 million pictures are downloaded every day on Facebook.

Scrapbooking Scraps by Jamie PlylerThru the Years! (School Scrapbooks):Every graduation par ty has pictur es of the graduate thr oughout their school years for everyone to look thru. Rather than just having a poster-board with pictures taped on it why not make a scrapbook? School Scrap-books are very easy to make. Many stor es have papers and stickers for every year of schooling. If you choose to use these different items, then you can make a simple scrapbook in as little as an hour or two. But you can always take longer and put mor e detail into it. Also make sur e to make pages for any spor ts or activities you participated in, even ones that were not school related such as dancing, local theater, etc. Another nice page to have is one spr ead with your yearbook pictur es k-12. It’s a nice addition for your fi rst or last spread so people can see how you have changed over the years side-by-side. Personalize the scrapbook to fi t your needs and your personality. School scrapbooks are fun to make and nice to have down the road.
