2014 NORCECA World Championship Qualification
St Lucians’ Pressure Burst Haitians’ Resistance
GROS ISLET, St Lucia, April 27, 2013- St Lucia got their campaign in the NORCECA Second Round Pool J
Tournament of the FIVB Men’s World Championship off to a winning start with a 3-1(26-28, 25-15, 25-
20, 25-20) triumph over Haiti on Saturday.
The Haitians came out of the blocks blazing and took the first set but the St Lucians responded with some good passing, fluid attacks, kills and blocks of their own to take next three sets. The home team’s resurgence was led by their ace player Joseph Clercent who scored 27 points followed by Julian Bissette with 19. Leading the Haitian’s scoring was Fitz Emmanuel Mabou who registered 21 points, in a losing cause. The encounter lasted for one hour and 37 minutes.
Kendall Charlery- coach of the victorious St Lucian team praised his team for rebounding well after the
loss of the first set.
He, along with team captain, Dayne Williams concurred that their team was not as switched on as they
should in the first set, which resulted in them having to dig deeper into their reserves and come from
behind.
Looking forward to the next match against the El Salvadorians, Williams said his team will have its work
cut out as they expect stronger opposition from the Spanish-speaking Central Americans.
Charlery shared similar sentiments to Williams, in looking ahead to St Lucia’s next match.
“ .… We realise El Salvador is a very experienced team, but we are prepared for them “, a confident
Charlery said.
On the other hand, Haitian head coach- Joseph Yves Larrieux admitted that his players fell apart
tactically after winning the first set.
“We did not block well; our attack was not strong, we played badly”, Larrieux confessed.
He, however is hopeful that his charges would improve in their next assignment against St Kitts and
Nevis.
St Lucia next meets El Salvador in today’s late match, while Haiti engages St Kitts and Nevis in the first of
this evening’s double header.
The winner of this pool, as well as the top place in the other five pools, automatically gains a berth to
the next round of the qualifiers.
Meanwhile, the four best second places also advance, but which will be in accordance with their latest
NORCECA rankings.
El Salvador Topples St Kitts & Nevis to
Open their Account
Gros Islet, St Lucia- April 27, 2013- El Salvador sent an
early warning signs that they too mean business in the
Second Round of the FIVB World Championships in the
NORCECA Zone here at the Beausejour Indoor Facility,
downing St Kitts and Nevis 3-1 ( 25-27, 25-18, 25-17,
25-15).
Playing in match two of Pool J, it was scripted similar to
the first between St Lucia and Haiti, as St Kitts and Nevis
won the closely fought first set 27-25.
But the more experienced El Salvador re-engergised
and re-grouped to establish their superiority in all facets
of the match.
In an exhibition of sticking with the basics, the El Salvadorians outlasted their opponents in
uncomplicated fashion, winning the ensuing three sets: 25-18, 25-17 and closed for the contest 25-15 in
the fourth set. They took one hour and 48 minutes to outpoint and remain ahead of the Kittians.
The top scorers for El Salvador were David Vagras who had -16 and Franscisco Hernandez- 15. For St
Kitts and Nevis, Shawn Seabrooks registered 19 points and St Clair Hodge – 18.
The win by the El Salvadorians set up a mouth-watering, edge of your seat encounter in the night
capper later today, as the Central Americans meet the host St Lucia, who also recorded a 3-1 triumph
over Haiti.
And, coach of the El Salvador team- Gabriel Linares is looking forward for a repeat performance.
“ We are hoping for a similar performance as against St Kitts(and Nevis), where pushed them very hard
with the serves and forcing to them to make mistakes, as they found it hard to pass the ball off the net”,
Linares recounted.
He acknowledged though that the St Lucians could be a tougher challenge.
Meanwhile, coach of the St Kitts and Nevis outfit- Glenn Quinlan believed it was the loss of their best
setter Mathew James early in the match, which caused an upset in his team’s equilibrium.
Quinlan though noted: “ We lapsed in certain arrears where our receptions start going badly during the
third set and this carried over into the fourth set, which was our worst set”.
Quinlan said his players must rebound and do so manfully as he is wary of the Haitian team, whom he
credits as having some pedigree.
Captain of St Kitts and Nevis- Steadroy Collins shares Quinlan’s view that they must improve against the
Haitians, if they have to remain in contention in the competition.
St Kitts and Nevis faces Haiti in match number three, which is scheduled to get going from 6:30pm,
following which St Lucia and El Salvador lock horns.
Match number five on Sunday morning features El Salvador versus Haiti, then St Lucia and St Kitts and
Nevis go head to head, as the preliminary phase closes off.
The first match serves off at 9am.
Haiti blows away St Kitts and Nevis in straight sets
GROS ISLET, St Lucia, April 27, 2013- Haiti unleashed their fury on an unresponsive St Kitts and Nevis 3-0
(25-22, 25-13, 25-11) to win their first match of the NORCECA Second Round in Pool J of the of the 2014
FIVB Men’s World Championships Qualifications, here at the Beausejour Indoor Facility.
The efficient Haitians got the job in just 58 minutes.
Haiti, who went under to St Lucia in their opening fixture, 3-1, avenged that defeat on the Kittians, thus
condemning to their second successive defeat.
St Kitts and Nevis provided limited resistance in the first set, but fell apart thereafter, as the injury bug
invaded their line-up, as team captain Steadroy Collins and St Clair Hodge had limited play.
Collins suffered a knee injury, while Hodge went down with cramps.
This incapacitation opened up gaping holes in the St Kitts and Nevis’ defence, which Haiti’s Fritz
Emmanuel Mabou and others exploited to good effect.
Mabou registered 22 points, while Volvick Senel Dupuy added 10 to aid the Haitians cause.
Shawn Seabrooks with a mere 7 points exemplified the St Kitts and Nevis’ paltry efforts at scoring.
Mabou, who showed some powerful hitting, expressed satisfaction for his input in his team’s efforts
stating that he adjusted his technique in the match, which enabled him to strike the ball a bit harder.
Coach of the Haiti team- Joseph Yves Larrieux welcomed the win and projected that his team will get
better as the competition progresses.
A somewhat despondent coach of the St Kitts and Nevis team, Glenn Quinlan, whilst apportioning blame
his team’s performance on the injuries sustained, admitted to his teams tactical and technical short
comings and the superiority of the Haitians.
“ … With three of your starters out , you are not going to make it at this level….Physically they were
superior than we were and they used that to good effect and we helped in the eventual outcome”,
Quinlan said.
In looking at the permutations which will enable his team to earn a shot at the gold medal, Quinlan
deemed his team’s charges as “improbable”.
Haiti next plays El Salvador in Sunday’s first match which is scheduled to begin at 9am. Then, St Lucia
meets St Kitts and Nevis.
The first and second place teams play in the final, while the third and fourth places meet in the
consolation play off.
El Salvador outlasts St Lucia in close encounter
GROS ISLET, St Lucia, April 27, 2013- El Salvador kept their winning streak intact , when they outlasted
St Lucia 3-1( 25-23, 19-25, 25-22,26-24) in match four of the NORCECA Second Round in Pool J of the
2014 FIVB Men’s World Championships Qualifications here.
The close encounter kept the home fans at the edge of their seats, as they wooed their team on with
every point scored, or at the blocks at the nets.
But that was at times subdued by the regular scoring of the El Salvadorians.
The high hand for El Salvador was Franscisco Hernandez with 17 points, while David Vagras contributed
11.
For the St Lucian, Joseph Clercent had 21 points and Julian Bissette accounted for 13 of his team’s total
number of points.
The El Salvador captain Carlos Amaya thought his team played well considering the physical nature of
the St Lucians and the home support the host gained on the night.
“…We were able though to manage the game properly and won points at crucial stages and went on to
win”, Amaya said.
Losing coach- Kendall Charlery, pointed to several factors which he thought cost his team the match.
“…. We lost our way a bit against a very experienced El Salvador team and it showed ….Some of our
main guys were not their usual selves, we missed a lot of points; we had a lot of net calls…There were
too many unforced errors and that cost us the match”, Charlery reasoned at the outcome.
“We are using this game as a wake call and lift our head for the remainder of the competition”, Charlery
stated.
The unbeaten El Salvador meets Haiti, who has one win and one loss in Sunday’s first match from 9am.
St Lucia with one win meets the winless St Kitts and Nevis, thereafter to close off the preliminary phase
of Pool J.
