of Arts and Sciences, where she is also
the James F. Rothenberg Professor of
Romance Languages and Literatures and
a professor of comparative literature.
Sorensen earned her BA from Universidad
de Buenos Aires and her PhD from Columbia
University. Before joining the Harvard
faculty in 2001, she worked at Columbia
and Wesleyan Universities. She is a specialist in nineteenth- and
twentieth-centuries Latin American Literature, with additional
expertise in cultural theory and gender theory. Her writing deals
with the relationship between culture and society. In June 2013
Sorensen assisted with the launch of the Instituto Cervantes
Observatory of the Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures in
the United States at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The newly
created institute will be an international hub for the study of how
the Spanish language has progressed in the United States.

Sea Explorer departs Buenos Aires in the evening.

In the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, discover the heart of the old city at Plaza Indepen-dencia, dominated by a huge statue of José Artigas, Uruguay’s greatest hero. See historic and cultural landmarks such as Palacio Salvo, the Solís Theatre, and the Metropolitan Cathedral in Constitution Square; and visit the Cabildo Museum, housed in the original town hall. After lunch on board, visit the botanical garden and the neighborhoods of Punta Carretas and Pocitos, where the great Ombú tree grows. Walk along the lovely coastal Rambla on the way back to Sea Explorer.

Admire Neoclassical buildings including the Palacio Garibaldi and Casa Romário Martins; and visit the Wire Opera House, designed by Domingos Bongestabs and situated in the old rock quarry of Pedreiras Park. In the afternoon ride the cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain to admire the sunset over the ocean. In the evening, the farewell dinner aboard Sea Explorer includes a special music and dance performance.

Disembark Sea Explorer this morning and ride the train up to Corcovado Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue for spectacular views over the city. Enjoy a typical Brazilian lunch before a visit to the lush botanical garden. Transfer to the international airport for the overnight flights home, arriving on Monday, March 24.

Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the beautifully restored Colón Theater and view a collection of contemporary Latin American art in the owners’ private gal-lery. The museum houses an impressive collection of European masterpieces as well as works by 20th-century Argentinian artists such as Nicolas Garcia Uriburu, Rómulo Macció, Raúl Soldi, and Xul Solar. Today the ship docks in Punta del Este, a glamorous city on a scenic peninsula. Known as the “St. Tropez of South America,” it also offers fine museums and rich architecture. Begin with an orientation tour followed by a visit to the famous Ralli Museum of Contemporary Art. Stroll along the waterfront to Artigas Square before enjoying lunch in the city on your own or back on board the ship. In the afternoon drive across the uniquely designed “La Barra” bridge to the Atchugarry Foundation and see the work of famous sculptor Pablo Atchugarry. Stop to sample delicious local dulce de leche before ending the day at the iconic Casapueblo. Perched atop a cliff with a magnificent view of the ocean, this Mediter-ranean-style villa was designed by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró and houses a modern art museum.

The museum houses an impressive collection of European masterpieces as well as works by 20th-century Argentinian artists such as Nicolas Garcia Uriburu, Rómulo Macció, Raúl Soldi, and Xul Solar. Today the ship docks in Punta del Este, a glamorous city on a scenic peninsula. Known as the “St. Tropez of South America,” it also offers fine museums and rich architecture. Begin with an orientation tour followed by a visit to the famous Ralli Museum of Contemporary Art. Stroll along the waterfront to Artigas Square before enjoying lunch in the city on your own or back on board the ship. In the afternoon drive across the uniquely designed “La Barra” bridge to the Atchugarry Foundation and see the work of famous sculptor Pablo Atchugarry. Stop to sample delicious local dulce de leche before ending the day at the iconic Casapueblo. Perched atop a cliff with a magnificent view of the ocean, this Mediter-ranean-style villa was designed by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró and houses a modern art museum.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91
days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason.

Your exploration of Buenos Aires continues this morning with either a visit to the contemporary collections at MALBA or to the Evita Perón Museum. Stroll through the Recoleta Cemetery, where Evita Perón is entombed in the Duarte Mausoleum. The afternoon is free, perhaps for shopping or gallery visits. Sea Explorer departs Buenos Aires in the evening.

In the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, discover the heart of the old city at Plaza Indepen-dencia, dominated by a huge statue of José Artigas, Uruguay’s greatest hero. See historic and cultural landmarks such as Palacio Salvo, the Solís Theatre, and the Metropolitan Cathedral in Constitution Square; and visit the Cabildo Museum, housed in the original town hall. After lunch on board, visit the botanical garden and the neighborhoods of Punta Carretas and Pocitos, where the great Ombú tree grows. Walk along the lovely coastal Rambla on the way back to Sea Explorer.

From Paranaguá, explore Curitiba, one of South America’s greenest urban destinations. Visit the botanical garden, located on the campus of the historic Federal University of Paraná. Then explore the streets of Largo da Ordem, a perfectly preserved area of the city that dates back to the 17th century. Admire Neoclassical buildings including the Palacio Garibaldi and Casa Romário Martins; and visit the Wire Opera House, designed by Domingos Bongestabs and situated in the old rock quarry of Pedreiras Park. After lunch, visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a grand colonial landmark with a rich collection of works by Brazilian masters such as Porti-nari, Mário Cravo, Guignard, Di Cavalcanti, and Burle Marx.

Diana Sorensen is Dean of Arts and
Humanities at Harvard University’s Faculty
of Arts and Sciences, where she is also
the James F. Rothenberg Professor of
Romance Languages and Literatures and
a professor of comparative literature.
Sorensen earned her BA from Universidad
de Buenos Aires and her PhD from Columbia
University. Before joining the Harvard
faculty in 2001, she worked at Columbia
and Wesleyan Universities. She is a specialist in nineteenth- and
twentieth-centuries Latin American Literature, with additional
expertise in cultural theory and gender theory. Her writing deals
with the relationship between culture and society. In June 2013
Sorensen assisted with the launch of the Instituto Cervantes
Observatory of the Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures in
the United States at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The newly
created institute will be an international hub for the study of how
the Spanish language has progressed in the United States.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91
days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason.

Your exploration of Buenos Aires continues this morning with either a visit to the contemporary collections at MALBA or to the Evita Perón Museum. Stroll through the Recoleta Cemetery, where Evita Perón is entombed in the Duarte Mausoleum. The afternoon is free, perhaps for shopping or gallery visits. Sea Explorer departs Buenos Aires in the evening.

In the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, discover the heart of the old city at Plaza Indepen-dencia, dominated by a huge statue of José Artigas, Uruguay’s greatest hero. See historic and cultural landmarks such as Palacio Salvo, the Solís Theatre, and the Metropolitan Cathedral in Constitution Square; and visit the Cabildo Museum, housed in the original town hall. After lunch on board, visit the botanical garden and the neighborhoods of Punta Carretas and Pocitos, where the great Ombú tree grows. Walk along the lovely coastal Rambla on the way back to Sea Explorer.

From Paranaguá, explore Curitiba, one of South America’s greenest urban destinations. Visit the botanical garden, located on the campus of the historic Federal University of Paraná. Then explore the streets of Largo da Ordem, a perfectly preserved area of the city that dates back to the 17th century. Admire Neoclassical buildings including the Palacio Garibaldi and Casa Romário Martins; and visit the Wire Opera House, designed by Domingos Bongestabs and situated in the old rock quarry of Pedreiras Park. After lunch, visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a grand colonial landmark with a rich collection of works by Brazilian masters such as Porti-nari, Mário Cravo, Guignard, Di Cavalcanti, and Burle Marx.

See major architectural landmarks, including the innovative and unusual interior of the Metropolitan Cathedral. Then visit the Modern Art Museum, with gardens by Roberto Burle Marx. In the afternoon ride the cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain to admire the sunset over the ocean. In the evening, the farewell dinner aboard Sea Explorer includes a special music and dance performance.

Disembark Sea Explorer this morning and ride the train up to Corcovado Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue for spectacular views over the city. Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the beautifully restored Colón Theater and view a collection of contemporary Latin American art in the owners’ private gal-lery. The museum houses an impressive collection of European masterpieces as well as works by 20th-century Argentinian artists such as Nicolas Garcia Uriburu, Rómulo Macció, Raúl Soldi, and Xul Solar. Today the ship docks in Punta del Este, a glamorous city on a scenic peninsula. Known as the “St. Tropez of South America,” it also offers fine museums and rich architecture. Begin with an orientation tour followed by a visit to the famous Ralli Museum of Contemporary Art. Stroll along the waterfront to Artigas Square before enjoying lunch in the city on your own or back on board the ship. In the afternoon drive across the uniquely designed “La Barra” bridge to the Atchugarry Foundation and see the work of famous sculptor Pablo Atchugarry. Stop to sample delicious local dulce de leche before ending the day at the iconic Casapueblo. Perched atop a cliff with a magnificent view of the ocean, this Mediter-ranean-style villa was designed by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró and houses a modern art museum.

Diana Sorensen is Dean of Arts and
Humanities at Harvard University’s Faculty
of Arts and Sciences, where she is also
the James F. Rothenberg Professor of
Romance Languages and Literatures and
a professor of comparative literature.
Sorensen earned her BA from Universidad
de Buenos Aires and her PhD from Columbia
University. Before joining the Harvard
faculty in 2001, she worked at Columbia
and Wesleyan Universities. She is a specialist in nineteenth- and
twentieth-centuries Latin American Literature, with additional
expertise in cultural theory and gender theory. Her writing deals
with the relationship between culture and society. In June 2013
Sorensen assisted with the launch of the Instituto Cervantes
Observatory of the Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures in
the United States at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The newly
created institute will be an international hub for the study of how
the Spanish language has progressed in the United States.
