allthelittlepanelsandknobsandsuchonmybag,so
appliedallthelittlefabricshapesyouseehere.
You’llwanttocutthemoutofyourappliquéfabricandadherethemtoeitherlightorheavyweightfusibleweb.Thenarrangethemaccordingtothepatternguidelines(notethatthelayeringofthespeakersgoesblack,darkgray,white,lightgray)andirontheminplace.Iusedlightweightfusiblewebthenstitchedthemonwithazigzagstitch.
Atthispoint,ifyou’readdingfusibleinterfacingtoyourbagyou’llwantto
doitnow,Besuretofuseitontothebacksideofyour
fabricpieces.
Ipersonallyusedfusiblefleeceinterfacing.Becauseit’ssothick,Itrimmedofftheseamallowancestoavoidextrabulk.

Tomakethelittletabsforattachingyourhandles,startbylayeringtwoofyourhandletabstogetherwithrightsidesfacing.You’llseehereIstrengthenedmycontrastfabricabitwithsomeinterfacing,sinceIwasusingsomeflimsybluecorduroy(cute,butitneededtobestrongerforabag).Sewaroundtheperimeterofthetab,leavinganopeninginthesideasthepatternindicatesforturningthetabrightsideout.Repeatthisthreemoretimeswithyourremainingtabpiecessoyouhavefourtotal.Whencomplete,trimtheexcessseamallowanceandturnthetabsrightsideout.
Pressthetabsniceandflat,thenedgestitcharoundthefinishedtabtobothcloseuptheopeninginthetabandalsomaketheedgeslookneatandpretty.

Nowwecanusethosetabstoattachthemetalringsforourhandles.
Foldthetabsinhalfwhileloopingoneofyourmetal
ringsthroughit,thenlayitdownonyourbagfrontwherealltheappliquéis.Sewitdownaroundtheoverlappedspacewherethepatternindicates(soitlookslikeoneoftheslidingknobs).Repeatthisfortheothertabonthefrontofthebagaswellasthelasttwotabsforthebackofthebag.
Thisbaghasanextrazipperedpocketonthebackmadefrominserting
azipperintoalittlefabricwindow.Youstartbylayering
oneofyourbackpocketpiecesoveryourbagbackwithrightsidestogether.Linethemupaccordingtothezipperopeningguidelineonthepaperpattern,thensewaroundtherectangleguidelinemarkedonthepattern.

Aftertherectangle’ssewn,goinandcliptheinsideoftherectangleopen.Thepatternguidelineswillgiveyouanidea–you’llneedtocutdownthemiddleoftherectangleinalongslash,thencutoutwardtowardsthecornersasclosetoyourstitchingasyoucangetwithoutaccidentallysnippingyourstitches.
Usingthatopeningyou’vejustcut,turnthefabricpiecesrightsideout.Ittakesalittlefinaglingandwon’tfeelquiteright,butifyoudoitcorrectlyyoushouldendupwithalittlewindowwhereyourrectanglewasandyourfabricsshouldhavewrongsidesfacingtogethernow.Givethatwindowagoodironingsoitstaysflat.

Withthewindowcomplete,youcannowaddinyour10”zipper.Layerthezipper
beneathyourouterbagfabricsoit’scenteredwithin
thatlittlerectangularwindow.Iliketoholdmyzipperinplacewithscotchtape,butyoucouldalsousefusibleweb,pins,orevenagluesticktoholditinplacewhileyousewaroundtheedgeoftherectangle.Besureyourzippersliderismovedtothemiddleofthewindowwhileyousew.
Tocompletethepocket,simplytakeyourotherbackpocketpieceand
layeritoverthepiecewiththezipper,rightsidesfacing.

Nowontothelining.Thepatterncallsforfourliningpiecesforthefrontandbackwhenyoutypicallyonlyneedtwo.Takethoseextratwoandfoldtheminhalflengthwisewithwrongsidestogether.Lineuptherawedgeofonefoldedpieceagainstthebottomedgeofoneofyourunfoldedliningpieces.
Bastethoselayerstogetheraroundtheedgeandafewlinesdownthemiddletocreatetheinnerpockets.Repeatthissameprocesswithyourlasttwoliningpiecessothatboththefrontandbackofyourinnerbaghasloadsofpocketsfororganizing:D
Whenyourpocketsareallcomplete,basteyourliningpiecestoyourfinishedouterbagpieces.Makesuretherightsidesarebothfacingoutandthetopsidesarealignedwhenyoudoso.Wewantthefrontandbackbagpiecestoactasonefortherestoftheproject.

myown.IhadsomeextracordinglyingaroundthatIwas
abletouseup.Withsome11/4”widebiasfabricandapipingfoot,Iwrappedthecordwiththebiasandsewedthecordinthemiddle,stitchingascloseaspossibletothecordthankstomypipingfoot.
Whetheryou’vemadeyourownpipingorpurchasedyours,you’llneedtobaste
ittoyourbagnow.Bastethepipingtotheedgeofthe
frontandbackpiecesofthebagsothecordingliesjustinsideofthestitchingline.Whenyouaddthesidesofthebaglaterthecordingwillpeekoutperfectly.
Overlappedthepipingalongthebottommiddlesideofthebagtobelessnoticeable.Itispossibletogobackandrejoinyourcordingsoitlookscontinuous,butthisisanicealternative.Justrepeatthiswiththebackofyourbag,andnowthefrontandbackofyourbagarecomplete!

Nowwecanfinallymoveontothesides!Forthetopsectionofyourbag,sandwichyour18”zipperbetweenoneofyourouterfabrictoppiecesandliningpieceswithrightsidestogetherandrawedgesliningupwiththezippertape.Sewthemtogetherwitha1/4”seamallowanceandpressthefabricawayfromthezipperwhenyoufinish.Thenrepeatthiswiththeothersideofyourzippertapeandtheremainingbagtoppieces.
Nextupthesidetabforyourshoulderstrap.Simplyfoldthetabinhalfandsewonesidetogethertomakealittletube.Turnitrightsideoutandpressitflatwiththeseaminthemiddleinsteadoftooneside.Repeatthiswithyourothersidetabpiecessoyouhavetwototal.

yourexcesszippertapefromstep14,thenlineupthe
rawedgesofyoursidetaboverthezippertapeandbastethetabinplace.Repeatthiswithyourothertabpieceontheothersideofyourbagtop.
Withyourbagtopallreadytogo,youcannowaddyourbagbottom.Simply
sandwichtheshortendofyourbagtopbetweenthe
bagbottomouterfabricandliningpieces(withouterfabricfacingouterfabricandliningfacinglining).Sewalltheselayerstogether,thenpressthefabricawayfromthezipper.Ipersonallydidalittleedgestitchafterwardstokeepallthelayersinlineafterironing.Thenyou’llwanttorepeatthiswiththeothersideofyourbagtopandbottom.Whenyoufinishyoushouldhavearingoffabric.

Withyourbagsidesalldoneyoucanthenstarttoattachittoyourbagfrontandback.You’llneedtouseapipingfootagainifyouwantyourpipingtoshow.
Beginbypinningthelayersinplace,wrappingthelongedgeofthebagsidesaroundtheedgeofthebagback.Cliptheseamallowancesofthebagsidessoitcurvesnicelyaroundthecornersofthebagback.Theseamsthatjointhetoptothebottomshouldmatchupwiththesquaremarkingsfromthepaperpattern,andthecenterfoldofthebagbottomshouldmatchupwiththesinglenotch.
Wheneverythingislinedupnicely,startsewingaroundtheperimeterofthebag.Whenyoufinish,openupyourzipperabitsoyoucanturnyourbagrightsideoutlater,thenrepeatthiswholestepwiththeotheredgeofthebagsidesandthebagfront.
Ipersonallywantedtocoverupallofthoserawedgesinsidemybag,soIusedsomeextrabiastapeIhadtobindupthoseseams.Youcouldusehomemadebiastapeaswell.

Tocompletethehandles,simplyfoldoneendofoneofyourhandlesthroughthemetalringbackfromstep4.Overlapthefabricbyabout11/4”,thensewitinplacewithaboxstitch.Repeatthiswiththeotherendofyourhandleandtheremainingmetalringonthatsideofthebag(beingsurenottotwistthehandlealongtheway).Whenthat’sallcomplete,repeatthiswholethingagainwithyourremaininghandlepieceandtheothersideofthebag.
Fortheshoulderstrap,it’sprettysimilar.Foldoveroneendoftheshoulderstrapthroughoneofthehookringsandoverlapthefabricbyabout11/4”andsewthelayersinplacewithaboxstitch.Repeatthiswiththeotherendoftheshoulderstrapandtheremaininghookring.NowyoucanattachyourshoulderstraptotheD-ringsonthesideofyourbagwheneveryouwish!NowgoloadupyourawesomenewbagbecauseYOU’REDONE!
