OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA
Our Mission Statement: Our Lady of Peace is a Catholic Community of Faith called to proclaim the
greatness of the Lord through Worship, Service, Education and Ministry.
Sunday’s Readings: First Reading ‐ The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint (Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18). Psalm ‐ The Lord hears the cry of the poor (Psalm 34). Second Reading ‐ The Lord will rescue me from every threat (2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18). Gospel ‐ All who exalt themselves will be humbled; all who humble themselves will be exalted (Luke 18:9-14). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

O God, who wills not the death of a sinner * but rather that he be converted and live * grant we beseech you * through the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin * Saint Joseph, her spouse * St. Junipero Serra * and all the saints * an increase of laborers for your Church * fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls * through the same Jesus Christ * Your Son * Who lives and reigns with You * In the unity of the Holy Spirit * God forever * and ever. Amen. Serra Prayer for Vocations
Daily at 11:40AM The Rosary of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary is prayed daily at 11:40AM, just before the 12:10 Mass. Mary in-vites all her children to come and pray her Rosary. Many blessings will be yours!

Members of the 31 Club agree to go to daily Mass on a particular day every month and offer that Mass for an increase of vocations to the Church. There is a great need for vocations in the Church today. One of the best ways to increase vocations is through prayer, and the greatest prayer we have is the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Upcoming Mass commitments: Oct. 27: Ann R. Oct. 28: Ann F., Michael M., Betty S. Oct. 29: Linda M., Janet A. Oct. 30: Bethann D., Linda D., Julie M., James S. Oct. 31: Jim Z. Nov. 1: Maxine R., Mark S., Evelyn V., Pat B. Nov. 2: Kathy W., Deacon Dennis K. If you would like to join the OLP 31 Club, please call Dave or Kathy Wayman at 397-6443. There are no dues and no meetings, only opportunities for grace and the satisfaction that comes from helping to fulfill a great need in the Church.

OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH ERIE, PA
From the Pastor’s Desk… To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace-
Congratulations OLP on winning the People’s Choice of Erie Award for Best Place of Worship! Every year I have been here (3 now) we have been in the top 3 but this is the first time we have won since 2011 or so. Thank you to all those who voted for us! I do not want to overstate the significance of this but it is surely an honor to be considered among the blessed spiritual communities in Erie. We also know we have much work to do in order to keep growing in the grace and the mission to which God calls us.
With this growth in mind I want to inform you of our parish plans over the next few months as I leave for Israel. First, by the beginning of November we plan to send out the Annual Report for our fiscal and spiritual year of 2018-19 (recall that we go from July 1 to June 30). I will offer you some reflections on what goals we have accomplished and in what areas we have fallen short at that time.
One area to address now is that we have been falling short the last few years in our offertory income. For this fiscal year starting July 1, 2019 (3 months) we are presently $42,000 behind budget ($259,000 budgeted compared to $217,000 actual). Our Finance Council has asked that we have an Increased Offertory Drive. So in the spring (May 2020) we will have that drive when you will be asked to increase your weekly or monthly commitment. In the meantime, I want to inform you of another way we can address the gap between our offertory budget and actual income right now.
This year for the first time the Diocese of Erie will be participating in the “#I Give Catholic” Campaign that has been done throughout the United States for the last 7 years. The Diocese is covering the cost of registration for all diocesan ministries although the diocese is not participating. So OLP Parish will be part of this campaign. We are designating November 21st, the Feast of the Presentation of Mary, as “#I Give OLP” DAY which is within the two week window of “#I Give Catholic” which ends on December 3rd. We will use the money that OLP receives through this campaign to go towards our Offertory Income deficit. So with the Annual Report that we send out at the beginning of November we will include the information on “#I Give Catholic” and “#I Give OLP.”
We will also be starting a new parish census in November at the initiative of our Pastoral Council. This is an important step in helping our parish identify who we are and where we stand as a parish community. The Council wants to eventually send out a survey to all parishioners about how we can serve everyone’s needs better and to receive other feedback, but we want to have the most accurate information about our parishioners before we conduct that survey. So we will have a Census Weekend where we will hand out the forms on November 9/10 and more information on that will be discussed then. I know this is a lot to absorb but again I wanted to lay it out there now since I will not have the opportunity to address you over the next two weekends. May God bless our parish planning and our week ahead!
Yours in Christ, Fr. Rich

Other notes from the pastor… **Book of Remembrance Our parish Book of Remembrance is available in the vestibule throughout October. You may write the names of beloved family and friends who have gone home to be with our Lord. The Book of Remembrance will be placed near the altar on the Feast of All Souls, November 2, and we will continue to pray for these loved ones throughout November. **Holy Land Pilgrimage Myself, Deacon Glenn and 39 other pilgrims left on Saturday, October 26th and will return Tuesday, November 5th. I am very grateful to know you will be in good hands with Fr. Hoffman. All of us on our pilgrimage are taking your intentions with us to the most holy sites in Christendom (including the ones you wrote at church). The tradition in Jerusalem is to place your written intentions in between the stones of the Wailing Wall (the Western Foundational Wall of the Temple of Solomon that is still exposed and is the holiest site for those of the Jewish faith). So our time at the Western Wall on Friday, November 1st will be the climax of our intercessory prayer for you when we will leave the intentions you provide us and pray for them. Keep us in your prayers! **Holy Land Itinerary Oct. 27- Tel Aviv; Oct 28- Mt. Carmel/Nazareth; Oct 29- Sea of Galilee, Mount of Beatitudes, Magdala, Cana, Capernaum; Oct. 30- Mt. Tabor (Transfiguration), Jordan River, Jericho; Oct 31- Bethlehem, Shepherds Field, Ein Karem (site of the Visitation); Nov. 1- Jerusalem- Western Wall (Temple), Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem, Mt. of Olives, Garden of Gethsemani, Upper Room (Last Supper and Pentecost); Nov. 2- Bethany, Masada, Qumran, Dead Sea, Temptation in the Desert; Nov. 3-Temple Mount, Ancient ruins of the City of David; Tower of David; Nov. 4- Via Dolorosa, Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher (contains Calvary and the Tomb). **Restored School Cross Thank you to the OLP Rosary Society who donated the $2,500 required to restore the 14 foot cross on the front of the school building. Also thank you to Gary James of James Restoration who did the work on the cross in gold leaf (which is what the original had back in 1957). Gary is also doing the restoration work on the front of the church. The cross was blessed before the school Mass last Tuesday and returned to the front of the school last Friday. **Playground Chimes Thank you to Jake Kohmuench who in the last few weeks installed a new chime set with our playground behind the school for his Eagle Scout Project!! I continue to be grateful to our scouts and their families as well as the scout leaders for all that they do for our parish and school. **Picnic Pavilion After years of discussion and planning, the work on the picnic pavilion began last week. I thank Wally Wilhelm and the Knights of Columbus for taking the lead on this and donating $12,000 towards the project. I also thank the following other groups from our parish and school who donated money towards the pavilion- Rosary Society- $5,000, School Athletics- $2,000,
THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 27, 2019
A Family Perspective Jesus is saying to you what he said to Zacchaeus, “I must stay your house today.” It doesn’t matter if in
today’s gospel Jesus “intended to pass through Jericho to another town.” In families we sometimes stop at
the wrong places. It is wisdom to “pass through” annoying family situations so we can enjoy the
goodness of each other.

Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt. The Box Tops for Education team has worked hard to build a NEW-and-improved, user friendly Box Tops mobile app.
The new app features state-of-the-art technology that allows you to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add Box Tops to our school’s earnings online.
Be sure to download the new app or update your existing app If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, make sure to send them to the school. We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire.

This active ministry can be done from home, a nursing home, the hospital, etc. Those who participate will be asked to voluntarily pray for a specific group, ministry or function as the meeting, ministry or function is occurring. Prayer is vital to our lives and keeps us connected as members of the Body of Christ.
