BMSFacultyReceivePrestigiousAwardsattheFacultyAwardsConvocation TwoBiomedicalSciencesDepartmentfacultymemberswereawardedprestigioushonorsattheFacultyAwardsConvocation.

OnbehalfoftheCenterforScholarlyandCreativeExcellenceandtheResearchandDevelopmentCommittee,CyndieThompson,AssistantProfessor,wasawardedtheDistinguishedEarly-CareerScholarAward.Thisawardhonorsremarkableinvestigatorswhohavedemonstratedmasteryintheirfield,significantscholarlyproduction,aswellassubstantialpotentialforcontinuedsuccess.

TheProvost’sOfficeawardedDebbieLown,AssociateProfessor,withtheOutstandingUniversityServiceAward.TheawardisgiveninrecognitionforservicetotheUniversity,includingbutnotlimitedtocommitteework.Itisalsoawardedinacknowledgmentofservicetothecommunitythatinvolvesthefacultymember'sprofessionalexpertise,includingbutnotlimitedtothefacultymember'sspecificdiscipline.

BMSProfessorPresentsResearchatWMUDavidLinn,AssociateProfessorofBiomedicalSciences,gavearecentpresentation,DrugsfortheEye:ExistingandEmergingTherapies,atWesternMichiganUniversityBronsonSchoolofNursing.Dr.Linn’slabexploresthemechanismsofactionofexcitatoryneurotransmittersincludingglutamateandacetylcholine(ACh)inthemammalianretina.

OsherLifelongLearnersProgramRecentlyDanBergman,AssociateProfessorandChairortheBiomedicalSciencesDepartment,conductedacoupleofsessionsonsensorysystemsneurosciencewiththeOsherLifelongLearningInstitute(OLLI)atAquinasCollege.OLLIisacommunityofadultsjoiningtogethertoachievepersonaltransformationofmind,body,andspiritthroughlifelonglearningandcommunityservice.Dr.Bergman’stwodaycoursewasentitledMakingSenseofOurSenses.ThisisthefourthsuchcoursehehasconductedfortheOLLIprogram.

OLLI’smissionistofosteraccessiblelifelonglearning,individualgrowth,andsocialconnectionforlearnersage50+byprovidingstimulatingopportunitiestoenrichtheintellectual,social,andculturallivesofmembers,regardlessofeducationalbackground.Coursesaretaughtinawelcomingenvironmentwithouttheacademicpressuresassociatedwithformal,degree-grantingprograms.Textbooksaregenerallynotrequiredandtherearenoexams,papers,orgradestoworryabout.Nospecificbackgroundisrequiredtojoin,justaninterestinacademiclearning,thedesiretoparticipatewithpeers,andamindthatisopentonewpossibilities.

OLLIisfundedinpartbytheBernardOsherFoundationthatsupportseducationalprogramsandthearts.OLLIatAquinasisoneof117institutesinall50statesfundedbytheFoundation.
