name, well known withinequestrian circles, as both hisgrandfather and his father wereprofessional riders. Specializedin classic equitation, Rafaelbegan competing at the age of36. A student of Álvaro Do-mecq (father and son), Soto’steam ranked seventh at theOlympic Games in Atlanta andwon fifth place at the SydneyOlympics, where he also ran-ked twelfth in the individualcompetition. It was at the 2002World Equestrian Games, heldin Jerez, that the national team,of which Soto was a member,won the bronze.

Exactly. The Jerez Fair is partcelebration, part equestrianshow and part competition. Iachieved all of these feats withthe purebred Spanish horsecalled ‘Invasor’, the most deco-rated horse of all time. It’s veryexciting to win awards at a fairthat I’ve been attending since Iwas six years old.

What are the fair’s roots?They say that the origins of theJerez Fair date back to the reinof Alfonso X, also known asAlfonso the Wise. At that time,this city, located in the provinceof Cádiz, had the privilege ofcelebrating two fairs a yearwhere the purchase and sale oflivestock was the primary rea-son for gathering. Over theyears, these fairs began to takeon a more festive note than acommercial one. By the begin-ning of the 20th century, theowners of Jerez’s wineriesbegan putting up the first standsat the Real de la Feria (thecurrent grounds are known as‘El Real’). The initial commer-cial aim may have changed, butthe celebration, the atmosphereand the entertainment are stillaround today.

Why would you recommendnot missing this year’s editionto the general public?The setting is spectacular. Plus,the theme of this year’s fair isSpanish Wine Trails. The com-petition and professional showsections are must-sees for ama-teurs and experts alike. Thefair satisfies both types ofaudiences.

Es emocionante parami conseguir galardones en estaferia, a la que llevo viniendodesde los seis años.

¿Cuáles son los orígenes deesta fiesta primaveral?Dicen que los orígenes de laFeria de Jerez se remontan al rei-nado de Alfonso X el Sabio. Enesa época, la ciudad gaditanatenía el privilegio de celebrar dosferias anuales, en las que la com-pra y venta de ganado era el

principal motivo de encuentro.Estas ferias, con el paso de losaños, comenzaron a adquirir uncarácter más lúdico que comer-cial. A principios del siglo XX,los dueños de las bodegas jere-zanas comenzaron a instalar lasprimeras casetas en El Real dela feria (el recinto actual seconoce como El Real). El fincomercial ha cambiado, pero lafiesta, el ambiente y la diversiónaún hoy se mantienen.

¿Por qué recomendaría no per-derse esta edición?La puesta en escena es espec-tacular. Además, este año laferia estará dedicada a las Rutasdel Vino Español. El apartadode concursos y exhibicionesmás profesionales es imprescin-dible tanto para amateurs comopara expertos. La feria satisfacea ambos públicos.
