Belmont Bulletin
20th September 2019
#
Dear Parents,
Belmont is bouncing as we charge towards the end of the second full week of the Michaelmas
Term. Our new pupils are settling in beautifully across the school and are beginning to allow
their personalities to shine as they find their feet in a new environment.
The Early Years have started well and I know that you will be pleased to hear that young Oliver
Fellingham is back to school following his trip to hospital in an ambulance. He was clearly thrilled
about the blue flashing light!
Our prep years are settling into new routines and classes well, and the new teachers in school
have made a positive impact whilst our senior year groups are finding their second wind and
recovering from the shock of returning to school and having to get up early in the morning!
Many of you will have seen the new electronic noticeboard in the front hall (and soon to come
in Early Years) displaying photographs and information about the forthcoming improvements to
the school site. At the start of October, I shall begin to send all parents a monthly update on
these developments to keep you all informed!
Autumn is arriving at a pace, and that means that the FOB Quiz Evening will be soon, so please
order your tickets early so that you are not disappointed. No need to have put together an entire
table, just order your tickets and FOB will make up tables as necessary.
Writing about the quiz reminds me that I need to write the questions so, with that in mind, may
I wish you all a restful weekend and I hope that you enjoy reading the pages of this Bulletin. May
I also take this opportunity to thank Mrs Owen in the office for putting the bulletin together
every fortnight – it is a labour of love but it is also well received! Thank you, Alison.
With kind regards,
Helen Skrine Headmistress

Children in Year 1 have been role-playing characters from the book ‘Little Rabbit Foo Foo’ in
their English and Drama lessons. They asked Little Rabbit Foo Foo questions about why he

Year 2 have been enjoying some busy maths activities in the
classroom. The children discovered that they had a pet frog who has
taken to sleeping in various children’s trainers each evening. Even
when he was returned to the pond, he found his way back. Will he
return again … ???

As part of the CE Geography exam, pupils in Year 8 have to complete a project, which is 20% of
the final examination mark. They visited the River Tillingbourne to complete the practical
element of the project - performing experiments, gathering data and drawing field sketches.

Words of the Week
from Mrs Bailey
In each edition of the Bulletin, Mrs Bailey would like us all to learn 2 new words so here are
the words for Week 4 and Week 5! Did you know them?
pell-mell
pel-MEL
1 : in mingled confusion or disorder
2 : in confused haste
When the final bell of the day rang, the children bolted from their desks and
streamed pell-mell out the door into the schoolyard.
olfactory
ol-FAK-tuh-re
1. of or relating to the sense of smell
The glands located between the cat's toes secrete a scent whenever he scratches on
objects such as a tree or a scratching post. This activity provides
an olfactory territory mark in addition to the visual.
A couple of useful apps which you may
wish to download onto your child’s device
are Squeebles (games to help learn weekly
spellings) and the Poetry App. The
children’s section of
www.poetryarchive.org is also excellent.
All children have access to the Grammar
and Spelling Bug via Active Learn, where
they can work on interactive spelling and
grammar games and they can log onto this
with their school usernames and
passwords. The following websites are
extremely useful for choosing a reading
book to read outside the classroom:

FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT: COMPETITION NEWS!
Competition 1: Design a new Art Achievement Certificate.
Pupils should create an A4 ‘arty’ picture in any material or combination of materials. We will then
scan the image and add information about who has received the certificate at a later date. This
essential space should be considered as part of the design. Winner receives an art supplies
bundle!
Competition 2: September Photography Competition
We want to encourage pupils to get more involved in this aspect of Art and Design and so each
month we will be setting a themed photography competition. This month’s theme is ‘Nature’ and
pupils should spend time considering how to interpret this idea in interesting compositions and
with appropriate subject matter. Winning entries will be published in the Belmont Bulletin and
displayed on Mrs. Fellingham’s, ‘Wall of Wonder’ in celebration of their success.
Entries for both competitions due by: Monday 30th September at the latest. These can be
delivered either in hard copy to the Art Studio or emailed to [email protected]
(Please ensure hard copies are labelled with the pupil name and form).
