THE PASTOR’S PEACE Towards the end of July several of our church members
went on a mission trip to Washington UCC in Cincinnati. We
spent 5 days there and experienced a range of situations and
emotions, and learned some life lessons. Washington UCC is a
church in our denomination that serves the Camp Washington
neighborhood. This area of Cincinnati has a child poverty rate
of 90% and is in great need in so many ways. Washington UCC
decided as its membership dwindled to focus almost solely on
mission work in the area rather than close or move the church.
Each summer there is a program that ministers to around 35
kids from the area. Different churches come and stay a week,
volunteering with the children. This teaches much to the kids in
need, and equally as much to those doing the volunteer work.
When I think of our group and all of our experiences
from handing out food to those in homelessness, to watching
kids eat smores for the first time, to sharing laughs and smiles
from all around, I realized that the things that separate us are
not as large as we would presume. Even though some of these
kids experience poverty on a daily basis in ways we cannot
imagine, they are still kids at heart, no different from the kids
that come to our church each Sunday. All of us have challenges
to face in life, some are greater than others, but this does not
make us any better than the next person or more valuable in
the eyes of God. Most often it is assumed that the youth and
adults that volunteer at Washington UCC will learn how fortu-
nate they are and learn to appreciate the blessings in their life. I
certainly learned this and assumed others from our group did
as well, but even more than that I hope that people saw them-
selves and their family in the eyes of others.
Paul says that we are all connected in the Body of Christ.
We are also reminded that Christ was born, died, and lived
again for everyone. When we look at the ministry of Christ we
see that he brought so many different types of people together.
What seemed to separate them fell away in comparison to the
love of God and the Word made flesh. As we continue Christ’s
ministry on earth it is meaningful when we create communities
that express the unity of Christ. As I think about our days at
Washington UCC, I think about all of the moments when people
were just people.

Pastor Brian on Vacation
Pastor Brian will be out of the office August 19th through September 3rd. He will
have his church cell phone with him and can be reached at (937) 469-1383 in
case of emergency.
(Pastor’s Peace Continued)
We were just taking care of kids, meeting new acquaintances, and trying to fill the sum-
mer with meaningful experiences. This lack of separation appearing many times during
our 5 days made me know that Christ was present. Christ was amongst us, bringing peo-
ple together, calling the little children around him, and leading us to a better future.
Thank you, Beaver UCC and Washington UCC, for showing me yet again the presence of
Christ in my life.
Peace and Blessings,
Pastor Brian
Trinity Birthday Party,
August 1st Please mark your calendars now! Beaver Church will once again be hosting the
birthday party at Trinity Nursing Home on Thursday, August 1st. Setup is at
6:00pm, and the event starts at 6:30. We need volunteers to do special readings, dances,
songs or any other talent which you may wish to share. We are asking for donations of
cookies and punch and also need volunteers to help serve to the residents. The residents
are especially fond of children performing and serving. Please plan on attending this party
and volunteering one hour of your time. The senior citizens are really very appreciative of
the time we spend with them. Hope to see you there!
Rev. John Barnett and his wife, Debbie, have sold their home in Miamisburg and have
bought a house in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He will be doing some part-time pastoral work
from time to time.
City Barbeque Fundraiser- Aug. 12 Great food, fellowship and fundraising sounds deliciously relaxing! Come
join us Monday, Aug. 12 at 6:00p.m. at City Barbeque, 2330 N. Fairfield
Road. Make sure to bring the flyer, printed in this newsletter, so we can get a 25% rebate
on all food purchases. This is a great fellowship and fundraising opportunity. This fund-
raiser is good the entire day for anyone who presents a fundraiser flyer, so distribute flyers
to co-workers, friends and family. Flyers cannot be distributed on City Barbeque property.

Pop! Pop! Pop! Our Mission’s title is Operation Popcorn. What does this mean? The Popcorn Festi-
val is fast approaching and we need to prepare for one of the more complicated and time-
consuming fundraising projects. We need donations of name-brand pop (Diet Coke, Diet
Pepsi, Coke, Pepsi, Root Beer, and Sprite), bottled water and bagged ice. All purchased
products should have expiration dates past the Festival date. Please start bringing these
items to church for our booth at the Festival, held on Sept. 7th and 8th here in Beaver-
creek. Our Food Booth serves homemade chicken and noodles, corn on the cob, hot dogs,
drinks and chips. Volunteer sign-up lists will be posted in the back of the church for any-
one wanting to help out. If you have volunteered in the past and are unable to help this
year, please contact Kristine as soon as possible. All other questions can be directed to
Kristine or Pastor Brian.
Mark your calendar for Operation Popcorn!!
GOD GOD WAS IN LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA when people from all over the country gathered for
the 29th General Synod of the United Church of Christ. God was present as delegates gath-
ered from every state in the union.
God was present as delegates to General Synod passed 19 resolutions directing the officers
and directors of the UCC to work for justice and to encourage local churches to join them as
they did it. Often there was debate as people found themselves on opposite sides of an is-
sue. But God was there and, even though voices were raised, issues were resolved.
God was present when approximately 5,000 people gathered in worship on Sunday after-
noon and scriptures were read in many languages. God was present when multigenera-
tional Samoans danced and sang. God was present when a young woman Gail and I knew
almost 40 years ago told us she was so moved by that experience that she wanted to find a
church home.
God was present when we gathered to share a meal with friends and when we discovered
new friends we hope to see again at the next General Synod when it gathers in Cleveland in
2015.
God was present in Long Beach, California during that week in many ways known and un-
known and God was also present here in Beavercreek, Ohio. You see, God is always here.
Asked or unasked, God is always present!
Stuart Wells, Delegate to General Synod from the Ohio Conference.

Softball Tournament Tales!! Kristine Petrick
BUCC Youth Softball team P-12 started the tournament in the Gold
Bracket with 6 other teams on July 17th. The first game was a 6-2 win. Our second game
wasn’t so good; our coach and 6 players were absent due to vacations and other plans,
which left the team one player short. The other team had a few oversized boys who hit the
ball over our three lonely outfielder’s heads. Needless to say, we lost 0 to 14. The next
evening we played our third tournament game in the loser’s bracket and played our hearts
out-- with the coach and 6 players missing again. We won 7 to 6 and immediately played
our fourth tournament game. The first two innings went pretty well but the heat, sun and
previously hard- fought game started to tire the players. With nothing to do but enjoy the
final inning of our last game, we finally scored three runs, so it wasn’t a complete shut out.
The final score was 3 to 17.
The good news is, we came in third place in the tournament, which is a pretty awe-
some achievement. The kids had a great season and a lot of fun, including my daughter
Sarah, who grew to enjoy the game and really felt like part of the team.
Thank You, Beaver Church!!
Connor Puckett Adventures! Kristine Petrick
This year I was relieved from swim team duty and found myself in-
vited to play in the Connor Puckett Classic, thanks to John Deal. Little did I know that I was
joining a foursome that traditionally comes in last place each year. Should I worry about
this? Probably not, since the last time I played golf was 12 years ago.
My golfing buddies were the highlight of my excursion. If you ever feel down, Ellen
Coleman is the person to bring you back up. She started by giving me golf cart driving les-
sons. I must say, I think Ellen needs lessons herself. because she sped thru every hole and
dip she could find. I felt like I was with the Dukes of Hazard riding in the General Lee.
Then Ellen and John taught me the finer lessons in relieving golf stress by their finely-
tuned golf club throwing techniques. Ellen needs a little work in the landing part. Good
thing we had Ken Kline on our team or we wouldn’t know what a good shot looked like.
As the heat increased and the beer carts, water carts and holes went by, the gang
loosened up. It wasn’t about finding your stray ball anymore. It was about keeping things
rolling along and going with the flow, because at the end was a delicious barbecue lunch
with church buddies, acquaintances and volunteers. A vacation day well spent. Thank
you, foursome and Connor Puckett Organizers, for a day that meant more to me than you
will ever know.
