been protected by the State of Hawaii as a Marine Conservation District.

snorkeling especially on the west (left-hand) side of the beach. In the winter
months it attracts top surfers from around the world, with large winter swells and
one of the best surf breaks on Maui. Surrounded by high rocky cliffs on both sides
the bay is sheltered from the wind and keep the water calm during the summer.
The cliffs also provide a great vantage point to watch surfers and the waves.

Maui’s beaches are beautiful and relaxing to enjoy, however conditions can change
often times without notice. Always check for posted hazard signs and heed all
directions given by lifeguards and Ocean Safety Officials.
• Check conditions before going in the ocean. Pay special attention to
shore breaks, strong currents, and undertows
• Sharp rocks, debris and other elements are not always visible so
use caution when entering the water
• Never swim in murky water. This usually occurs after heavy rain
• Never turn your back to waves as they can knock you over unexpectedly

Leaving Kapalua Resort and heading north will take you to the quiet,
beautiful and adventurous side of Maui.
MUST SEE SPOTS:
• The next beach after D.T. Fleming Beach and before Mokule’ia Bay is a hid-
den gem. Don’t let the long stairway deter you, once at the bottom the gold-
en sand, cooling shade trees and crescent shaped beach is worth the hike!
• Look out point at Honolua Bay - this pull out on the ocean side of the road
gives you views of the surf and the beautiful Honolua Bay from above.
Local vendors offer their wood carvings and fresh coconut drinks to enjoy
• Continuing past Honolua Bay on the winding road north you come to
Nakalele blowhole, a beautiful site to see the power of the ocean, however
enjoy at a distance as it can be dangerous. As a rule of thumb, safely view
from the areas with dry rocks. Once you get to the bottom of the trail at the
blow hole, turn left and you will see a heart shaped hole that has formed in
the middle of the rocks. This makes for a fantastic photo opportunity!
