HIGHLIGHTS
The shipping industry has been keenly looking for safe and effective ballastwater management solutions to meet the regulatory requirements. In anticipationof the regulatory requirements that mandates on-board treatment technologiesas early as 2009, shipbuilding industry is also actively searching for technologies
The transfer of harmful organisms and pathogens through ships' ballast water has beenrecognized as one of the greatest threats to the marine environment and human health. The situation seems to be getting worse with growing maritime activity in recent years.Unlike other forms of marine pollution, its impacts on marine environment are mostoften irreversible, resulting in tremendous economic and social problems.
In response to the threats posed by invasive marine species, the international maritimecommunity has developed regulations and guidelines to minimize the transfer of harmfulaquatic organisms and at the same time initiated R & D to address the problem.
The adoption of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships'Ballast Water and Sediments in a diplomatic conference at IMO in February 2004 is nodoubt the most important milestone in ballast water control. As per this new Convention, all new and existing ocean-going ships will be required to carry out ballast watermanagement in accordance to international standards within a designated timetable.
At the same time, a wide variety of ballast water management options are beingdeveloped by various industry and technology vendor groups. Several of thesedevelopments have moved up from pilot-scale tests to full-scale shipboard trials andapproval stages. In spite of the rapid development in this area, a number of issuespertaining to ballast water management has yet to be resolved.
ICBWM 2006Introduction
The latest developments of ballast water management technologies, including ballastwater exchange method, filtration method, ozone treatment, chlorine dioxide treatment, hydrodynamic treatment, electrochemical treatment, electro-chlorination treatment,de-oxygenation method, coagulation method, ferrate treatment and water samplingand analysis method, will be presented by authors over the world.
In this forthcoming ICBWM’06, five distinguished keynote speakers, representing academics, IMO and UNDP andshipping industry, are invited to del iver keynote speeches covering dif ferent perspectives.
