ELEMENT BEARERS
When we come together to worship, we have many individual
parts to play. One important task is that of element bearers.
While we have a pool of members who regularly serve as
element bearers, additional volunteers are always welcome.
There is a place for you to help in this ministry. Each Sunday,
we need two people to carry the elements forward. The task is
not difficult, nor takes much time, but it is a
vital service.
A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board
in the Parish Hall. If you have questions, about
serving as an element bearer, please contact
Kathy Ellis at [email protected].
P rogress continues on the Needlepoint Kneelers. The design work has been completed, and the painted
canvases are arriving every few weeks. Presently, we have four (4) faithful stitchers working diligently on the first received of these lovely kneelers. Stitching opportu-nities are still available.
We are thankful for those persons who have already supported this project through their sponsorship. Opportunities to support this project are still available – the full sponsorship of a regular kneeler is $2,800, and
the cost of a shared sponsorship is $1,400. The larger, central 13th kneeler can be sponsored for $3,200.
Watch the hallway bulletin board (outside the Parish Office) for pictures and more details about these lovely designs.
Please contact: Ellen Urbanski ([email protected]), 540.580.8499 or Joanne Jones ([email protected]), 540.588.4489
if you have any questions or additional interest in this project.

…that on a recent Friday afternoon at Christ Church, the
nave would be filled with the Holy Spirit, inspired by local
organist, Jimmy Cook, who played the organ at the funeral
of B. Ray Phanelson’s mother at Jerusalem Baptist Church
in 2016. So impressed with his playing, Tom Baugh invited
him to come to Christ Church sometime to play our Fisk in
an informal setting. Mr. Cook sat at the organ console for
over an hour, playing hymns with extraordinary feeling,
creativity, and finesse for a few friends from Jerusalem
Baptist Church and from our parish. His comfort and exper-
tise in how to touch and release the keys and pedals were
immediately apparent, and he later shared that he had
played a pipe organ many years ago.
To close the gathering, Tom asked Rev. Kenneth Wright,
retired pastor of First Baptist Church-Gainsboro, to give a
benediction, which he did - but only after singing solo the
hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” with his powerful, rich,
and sonorous voice, clearly imparting the message
of the hymn.
Everyone left feeling joyous, uplifted, and
grateful for every word and note we heard that
afternoon. Thank you, Jimmy, B. Ray, and Tom.

FEASIBILITY STUDY
After a period of discernment, and careful
evaluation of the congregation’s aspirations and priorities,
parishioners of Christ Church, Roanoke, VA were surveyed
through a Feasibility Study conducted by the Episcopal
Church Foundation (ECF) in May 2019. The purpose of the
study was to determine the willingness of the members to
support a proposed capital campaign to raise up to
$1,552,272 for the identified projects.
We have received the results of the Feasibility Study, and
our ECF consultant, Nick Sollog, presented those results to
the Vestry on Tuesday evening, June 18. Below is a
summary of the study.
All members of the parish were invited to participate in
the feasibility study, and 57% responded to the survey via personal interviews, led by the ECF consultant, direct mail, and electronic emailed survey.
Responses indicate an enthusiastic 98% support for
conducting a capital campaign, although with some reservations. Study results indicate that 74% of respondents would contribute to a campaign, and 23% are unsure at this time.
By using the ranges of estimated gifts they indicated,
and applying a formula which takes into account as yet unidentified gifts, as well as other relevant factors noted in the responses, ECF recommends that Christ Church conduct a capital campaign to raise a primary goal of $853,500 to fund the top priority project of improved accessibility. A challenge goal might also be considered.
While there are no substantial objections to the timing
of the campaign, it is recommended that leadership “fine tune” the final campaign project and costs and conduct a dual campaign in the Fall. This timing will maximize the effort of an “every member” invitation to support both annual and capital needs.
All of the comments provided by respondents are
included in their entirety in the final report. The unattributed comments should be read thoroughly, in order to obtain a complete understanding of all views expressed in the Study. This will prove very helpful to the leadership and members of the congregation as decisions are made about final project plans and moving forward with a campaign.
Section One of the final report provides background on
ECF’s Feasibility Study methodology and offers more detailed conclusions and recommendations flowing from the results of the Study.
The final report, in its entirety, can be accessed from the
homepage of our website (www.christroanoke.org). We
hope that you will review the entire report. If you would like
to read a hard copy of the report, please call or stop by the
Parish Office, 540.343.0159, and sign out a copy of the report.
Our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the
Feasibility Study and shared their thoughts and concerns
and their willingness to assist with conducting a capital
campaign. We remain, as always, very open to hearing your
thoughts, concerns, and questions. We are all in this together.
Email the campaign at, [email protected].

OUTREACH
July Feed the Hungry ~ Highland Park School
This month’s Feed the Hungry offering is dedicated to the educational and
nutritional needs of students at our neighboring partner school, Highland Park
Elementary. The Highland Park teachers and staff continue to excel, both
in meeting challenges and in attaining superior results for their students. They
are committed to helping every student reach his or her potential. In our parish
ministry to Highland Park, we work through Congregations in Action (CIA),
an affiliation of area parishes and congregations. Members of our parish serve
as mentors, lunch buddies, and readers for the students. We also help with the
“Pack a Snack” program and provide school supplies. As part of the CIA, we
contribute financial and volunteer support for Fun Day. Your Feed the Hungry
funds will provide many children with continuing nutritional support through
Pack-A-Snack, plus additional program support. Please be generous.
For contributions by check, please make payable to Christ Episcopal Church
and earmark “Feed The Hungry.” You may also place your donation in one of
the yellow envelopes found in the pew racks. Drop your check or yellow
“Feed the Hungry” envelope in the offering plate.
