TO CONTRIBUTE TO COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT GOALS OF
THE UNIVERSITY and provide engagement opportunities to its
members, the Community Engagement Committee (CEC) was
recently established by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for
Lasallian Mission and Student Affairs Office.
Following the theme: “Engage in meaningful and sustained
initiatives to improve quality of life,” the committee identified
its partner and beneficiary, F.G. Calderon Integrated School in
Tondo, Manila.
The school caters to 3,400 students coming from various areas
of Manila and Caloocan City.
The project supports Republic Act 8525 “Adopt a School Act
of 1998” which establishes the situation of public education in
the country and the opportunity for institutions to respond.
Education as the charism of St. John Baptist de La Salle was the
moving principle in choosing F. G. Calderon Integrated School as
partner. An initial visit and consultation were conducted to verify
the needs of the partner organization and the capacity of the
Lasallian Mission Community to respond to their plight.
THE LASALLIAN MISSION COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE, in partnership
with the Office of Counseling and Career
Services, facilitated a seminar-workshop
on “Suicide First-Aid Guidelines” for 72
teachers of F. G. Calderon Integrated
School last April 29 at DLSU Enrique
Razon Sports Center.
The interactive workshop focused
on various factors contributing to the
development of suicide-related conditions
among the youth. Discussions included
how to spot signs and symptoms of
suicidal individuals and dealing with them
through empathic listening and counseling
referrals.
Case studies and role plays with artists
from Bagong Silang Caloocan Community
highlighted the afternoon session. OCCS
Director Dr. Susana Estanislao, with
Counselors Marissa Pascual and Jose
Alejo, led the discussions.
Simultaneously, the Student Media Office
facilitated a journalism workshop for
students of Calderon Integrated High
School. Eleven students and faculty
advisers attended the workshop. The
training equipped student media officers
of F. G. Calderon Integrated School with
reporting, journalism,
and advocacy skills.

DLSU President and Chancellor Br. Ricardo Laguda FSC
delivered the welcome remarks for the event, which was attended
by the presidents, rectors, vice chancellors, and resource
persons of AUN member universities.
The meeting featured a lecture on world-class quality
management, particularly on the case of National University of
Singapore, by its Deputy President for Academic Affairs and
Provost, Prof. Tan Eng Chye.
Participants conducted workshops on how to move from
program assessment to institutional assessment; AUN credit
transfer, which seeks to promote and facilitate student and
academic mobility; ASEAN student leader forum; and the
establishment of the AUN health promotion sub-network.
DLSU also hosted the 30th AUN Board of Trustees Meeting on
June 19-20, which discussed, among others, the status of the
implementation of programs and activities within ASEAN and with
its partners.

GCOE CIVIL ENGINEERING FACULTY DR. ANDRES ORETA
DELIVERED a lecture on “CE Research on Safe and Sustainable
Infrastructure at DLSU” in a seminar for civil engineering graduates
students at the Nagoya University Department of Civil Engineering
last May 2.
This, in addition to pursuing collaborative activities with educational
institutions in Japan, was the objective of Oreta in his recent visits
to Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) and Nagoya University.
Oreta also met with Professor Soichi Hirose, chair of the
Environmental Informatics Group of Tokyo Institute of Technology,
to discuss possible research activities on the topic of non-
destructive testing.
Hirose shared information about the Earthquake Engineering
Program at TIT, which aims to produce highly skilled engineers and
researchers, in the Masters and Doctorate level, on earthquake
hazard mitigation.
THE GOKONGWEI COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, IN COOPERATION
WITH AMIHAN GLOBAL STRATEGIES, held “Digital Transformation
Forum” as part of its Enterprise Briefing Series last May 29 on
campus.
The forum featured Dr. Jayakanth Srinivasan, a faculty member
of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of
Management, and Mia Umanos, director of Analytics Digitaria.
The two shared expertise on the concept of sustainable enterprise
transformation and how consumer data can be harnessed towards
more insightful decision-making.
Srinivasan underscored the use of seven principles of enterprise
transformation as a guide to affect change in the organization,
from the assessment of the current business state to identifying
improvement opportunities, to its execution cycle.
In her lecture entitled “Understanding the Digital Consumer,”
Umanos highlighted how consumer data could be harnessed for
more insightful decision-making through the application of analytics
to customer interaction data.
Through multiple touchpoints with customers, Umanos detailed that
organizations could continually accumulate data and could, thus,
understand shifts in consumer behavior and better identify needs
and measure success.
TO CELEBRATE ITS 35TH YEAR the Social Development Research
Center held “SDRC @ 35: Crossing Boundaries, Advancing Beyond
Change” at the Henry Sy, Sr. Hall last April 28.
The event served as a forum for its stakeholders and funding
agencies. The highlight was the center’s current research
efforts into the immediate effects of Typhoon Yolanda upon the
marginalized families of Leyte.
Studies on poverty alleviation, adapting to climate change in
Southeast Asia, reproductive and health needs of women with
disabilities, and health facility assessment of barangay health
stations were also presented.
A memorandum of agreement was also signed between the SRDC
and the Department of Social Welfare and Development. This
educational institution and government agency partnership is a
research and data sharing initiative that aims to analyze the impact,
outcomes, and implementation of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino
Program.
TO PROMOTE DISASTER
RISK REDUCTION AND
INFRASTRUCTURE
DEVELOPMENT, DLSU invited
the chair of the Civil Engineering
Department of Nagoya
University, Japan, Professor
Hikaru Nakamura, as guest
lecturer in a graduate seminar
on campus recently.
Nakamura delivered his lecture
on “Damage Evaluation Analysis
and Repair/Strengthening
Method of Concrete Members
due to Earthquakes,” which
covered seismic damage
assessment and stressed the
importance of damage evaluation
of concrete structures before
an earthquake takes place.
He also presented the use of
nonlinear analysis for damage
evaluation and some rapid repair
and strengthening methods that
were developed for restoration of
damaged structures.
Chairman of the DLSU Civil
Engineering Department Jason
Ongpeng presented Nakamura
with a certificate of appreciation.
The Seminar on Disaster Risk
Reduction and Infrastructure
Development is a course offered
to students taking up masteral
and doctoral degrees in Civil
Engineering. This course was
facilitated by faculty members Dr.
Andres Oreta and Dr. Lessandro
Garciano.
