READ ALL ABOUT IT…
Day of Pink was observed April 10, 2013. Motivational speaker, Rick Rossini, inspired the students as he performed his magic at Centennial. Our Spring Family & Friends Book Fair was a Huge Success. Thanks to parents, teachers and students who supported by pur-chasing products and volunteering their time. The schoolyard and Etobicoke Creek trail look fantastic thanks to teachers and students who participated in a Community Clean-Up on April 22nd to celebrate Earth Day Asian Heritage activities will occur during the Month of May. Artwork by students from Cen-
tennial will be on display at the board office. See our May Calendar, which includes a Sports at a Glance section, to keep track of all the activities which will be happening here.

Thinking about how to save money AND save the environment? We think you will be thrilled to know that Centennial Senior Public
School is continuing our popular Think Recycle Program!
Think Recycle is an environmental program that educates our students on the importance of recy-cling electronics responsibly while, at the same time, raising funds for important environmental ini-tiatives at the school. The Think Recycle program wants unwanted cell phones, laptops, printer and toner cartridges.
Please, do all that you can to make this year our best yet: ask your friends and neighbours; ask at work and at the businesses you frequent. Ask them to donate their unwanted cell phones, laptops, and printer cartridges. (Experience shows that most people welcome the opportunity to dispose of their used and unwanted electronics in a safe, socially responsible manner. You’re probably doing them a favour).
Your support of the Think Recycle program sets a good example for our students as they learn about the importance of recycling. They will learn about the benefits of tree planting because one tree will be planted for every 24 Qualifying Products we collect.
If you would like more information, visit www.thinkrecycle.com .
Thank you in advance for your support.
Please bring all electronics recycling to room 123.

We Are Silent It was a pretty peaceful day for some teachers at Centennial on Thursday, April 18
th. This is
because members of Free the Children and other Centennial students took part in a Free the Children’s campaign, We Are Silent, formerly known as the Vow of Silence. Some students conquered the 24 hour challenge and stayed silent for the entire day, while other students only stayed silent for a few hours, which is still amazing. The students of Centennial once again came together and showed their support for Free the Children and once again we thank them. They showed school spirit and helped raise awareness for the children without a voice. Way to go Centennial! Our silence represented those children in third world countries whose voices are being silenced and whose rights are not being upheld. Also, a HUGE shout out goes to Mme. Randall who organized and took part in the We Are Silent campaign. Thank you so much and thanks to all of you for your support! Maneet K. (8-1)

Book Fair Success!
Yes, when you add all of the above elements
together, we achieved terrific results at our Spring Family and Friends Book Fair. Sales hit the $3341.60 mark with a grand total of $7386.85 for the 2012-2013
school year. The money raised includes the purchase of $656.00 worth of books from the Fair for inclusion in our
collections; a $300.00 Book Fair Credit Voucher for future, literacy-based purchases from Scholastic’s Catalogues; and a $600.00 deposit into the Book Fair coffers for use at the Scholastic Warehouse Sale in May and our year-end
Library Celebration in June. The success of the Book Fair is based on the contribution of a number of individuals. Appreciation is extended to
Ms. Schneller and the following 17 students in class 7-1 who served as an outstanding Book Fair Sales Crew: Jessica, Justin, Spencer, Olivia, Serena, Nicholas, Linden, Ravi, Autumn, Alex, Katona, Andi, Bethany, Grant,
Shyanne, Curtis, and Jacqueline.
The knowledge and skills these students learned and applied during their various marketing, management and
service roles were based on an authentic employment experience. When asked to reflect on the opportunity, Katona mentioned one of the “benefits…is the teams were doing the right thing of helping out each other”. Though
Shyanne was understandably challenged in wearing the bulky and difficult-to-navigate Clifford costume, she enjoyed
the additional perks of “eating cookies and buying stuff from the Book Fair”. Perhaps she was the one in the Clifford suit at the Kiss ‘n Ride in the morning waving at you.
For Alex, the Book Fair was a blend of fun, stress (i.e., he was a cashier), and excitement. Grant appreciated the
authenticity of the experience and what it would be like “working at a real store”. He learned how to handle problems and felt he developed some “organizational skills” as well. Linden, also a cashier, wrote about “new skills,
new opportunities” and a newfound “sense of responsibility”. Autumn felt she “learned new work skills for the
future including learning to work with others”.
Ravi disclosed he felt the jitters when presenting the introduction to visiting classes but was appreciative of “learning more about books”. As the week progressed, outgoing Nicholas “became less afraid to read [the intro] to a large
number of people” and welcomed the opportunity “to meet new people every day”. As a cashier, Curtis took pride
in knowing he was “responsible enough to handle others’ money because [he] was trusted”. Bethany appreciated the opportunity to “learn new skills” and demonstrate “leadership”. Jessica “learned more about business and how
retail works”. Both Justin and Spencer welcomed the opportunity to help others. Beyond the fun of it all, Serena felt the experience helped with “multi-tasking, responsibility and organization”. Orville, basked in
P.R.I.D.E. Page 4
the limelight of being “popular” but felt the academic challenges that arise when classes are missed. Bottom-line, Olivia wrote, “we got to contribute and help raise money for Centennial”. And certainly, the Book Fair Crew did just
that!
Kudos also goes out to Ms. Osmanksi and class 7-8 for designing and creating the phenomenal promotional posters
hung throughout the school. As well thank you to the Ashford family for purchasing books for the classroom library of Ms. Stagg. And finally we’re grateful, to teachers who signed up their classes to attend, to Mrs. Dickinson for her
bookkeeping skills, to the custodians who had to maneuver around our displays, and all school personnel who did some of their own personal shopping.
Cheers to the written word and reading, Mrs. Lister, Teacher-Librarian

Environmental Action at Centennial
An enormous THANK YOU goes out to the over 100 staff and students who participated in a Schoolyard and Community Clean – Up on April 22
nd to celebrate Earth Day. The schoolyard and
Etobicoke Creek trail look fantastic! Mrs. Glenn’s class has started our annual E-Recycling program. If you have any old cell phones, cameras, laptops or ink cartridges please bring them to Rm 123. For every item collected a tree will be planted and funds will be raised for environmental initiatives at our school.
Lastly, Centennial’s gardens are in need of plants and green thumbs. A
Gardening Club will be starting up at Centennial the beginning of May. If you
have any plants that need to be split this spring or some spare time to assist us,
please contact Ms. Alexander. Students, please listen for the Gardening Club
Announcement.

DAY OF PINK
P.R.I.D.E. Page 6
Wednesday, April 10, 2013 marked Peel's In-ternational Day of Pink. Day of Pink is a great cause to help raise awareness to prevent bul-lying, discrimination, homophobic and tran-sphobic bullying in our community. Centennial supported this amazing cause to celebrate diversity by standing together wearing pink to create a “Sea of Pink” to say no and stand up to bullying. Mrs. Slomek and class 8-5 organized an excit-ing afternoon to promote Day of Pink. During the week the students of 8-5 went around to classes to sell specially ordered Tim Horton’s pink sprinkled vanilla dipped donuts and candy gram “Promise Rings” (Ring Pops).
This initiative was to help encourage students to learn how to be open minded and accepting while raising money for a special guest. To top off our extravagant, fun filled Day of Pink, a very magical guest joined us to help the stu-dents of Centennial SAY NO TO BULLYING. Mr. Rick Rossini, a former victim of bullying shared his story of how bullying affected his life, and the marvelous ways he learned to over-come it by practicing magic. Incorporating his magnificent acronym of B.A.N.D. TOGETHER, Mr. Rossini really showed Centennial that no-body deserves to be bullied, and that there is always something you can do to help out. Congratulations Centennial, our Day of Pink was a smashing success!
Day of Pink Day of Pink is a day, April 10
th, when we celebrate
diversity, promote being open-minded and accepting of others, and a day to stand up to bullying/discrimination. Mrs. Medley and the Pink Squad stayed in during recesses brainstorming different ideas on what we would do to get each class involved with Pink Day. We originally decided we would spell out a word(s) with puzzle pieces, each puzzle piece having a specific anti-bullying message for Pink Day from each class. We realized that if we wanted to do that, the letters would be too wide and big. Instead we decided that using a big heart would take a lot less space and would look better. We had the idea of puzzle pieces because when you finish a puzzle, you see a clear picture of what each piece together made (we wanted to send a clear message with each puzzle piece creating a heart). Also, the heart as a whole would represent unity, love, and the coming together of each class (by working together). Embrace diversity, live united represents Centennial working together to make a positive change.
