Time is money, and downtime is less money. So it’s no surprise that
when the belts aren’t run-
ning and material isn’t moving, you may be tempted to skip a few
steps here and there when splicing the belt. One step that is
sometimes overlooked is “skiv- ing.” When you skive the belt, you
are simply removing part of the belt top cover to achieve a lower
fastener pro- file at the splice. In essence, you are removing the
rubber cover and replac- ing it with belt fasteners that protect
the belt and keep it moving to maximize productivity. It makes
sense, but does it really matter?
When You Should Skive Skiving the belt reduces the fastener profile
on the belt, resulting in im- proved fastener-cleaner compatibil-
ity and increased fastener service life. When the skiving layer is
removed, the fasteners are installed so they are even or slightly
below the belt surface. This outcome reduces the chances of the
fasteners getting caught on belt components and even the structure
itself. Any contact with cleaners, rollers, and skirting can damage
both the belt and the components, resulting in reduced component
life, downtime, and maintenance issues.
The process of skiving also creates stronger splices. The splice on
a properly skived belt will last much longer because you are
achieving a lower profile, while preventing excess wear and tear on
the fasteners. Also, when a belt is skived, it removes the top
rubber layer from the belt, placing the top and bottom plates of
each fastener closer to the carcass and resulting in improved
strength of the belt splice.
When You Shouldn’t Skive Lack of time, as mentioned above, is never
an acceptable reason not to skive your belt. There is, however, a
reason that justifies the choice not to skive while installing a
splice on your belt. When the top cover of your belt is very thin
or worn, skiving your belt is not recommended. You may remove too
much and end up damaging the belt carcass and
compromising the strength of the belt. Even when the cover is ideal
for skiving, care must be taken when
skiving the belt. Skiving does not weaken the belt because it
removes only the protective top cover, leaving the belt’s carcass
intact. According to the Conveyor Belt Equipment Manufacturers
Association (CEMA), “the carcass carries the load and is the
primary reinforcement for resis- tance to tear and impact, and for
mechanical fastener retention.” Some skiver manufacturers suggest
leaving 1/16” of the cover of the belt in place to provide
protection for the carcass against the elements.
Choosing the Correct Skiving Tool How you skive and the equipment
you use is very important. Handmade skivers often consist of a
knife or a blade and are not recommended. When you don’t have the
proper equipment to measure the skive, you run

the risk of cutting into the vital carcass fibres. This situation
may present a safety issue for workers and significantly reduce the
life of the splice.
When choosing a skiver, look for a compact, lightweight model that
will allow you to work in cramped spaces. Finding a skiver that
allows you to set the proper depth and width is important. In
addition, it is vital to measure the cut from the most worn part of
the belt. Re- moving the top cover of the belt does not compromise
the strength of the belt, but cutting the carcass will.
Traditional skiving tools typically employ a wide cutting head
drawn across the belt by a manual winch and guided by a lightweight
aluminum track. Adjustments allow the blade to remove the desired
amount of belt top cover, leaving a flat-bottom trough with rounded
lower corners to pre- vent the adjacent belt cover material from
tearing along the bottom edge.
Newer, compact belt skivers eliminate the guide track and winch, as
well as the need to nail down the belt, while enabling fast, easy
removal of conveyor belt cover material. Employing an integral
ratchet-driven roller design, hand-operated tools carve a
flat-bottomed trough as deep as 11 mm (7/16 inch) in a single pass.
This multiple-pass capability allows deeper skiving in rubber and
synthetic belts up to 32 mm (1 1/4 inches) thick. A range of
user-selected widths accommodates varying belt-fastener
sizes.
Operating and Maintaining Your Skiver Choosing the correct skiver
can also save you time and future mainte- nance when it comes to
skiving the belt. A simple skiver design involves making manual
adjustments for desired skive depth and width. With the skiver
properly positioned and secured on the belt end, users then ratch-
et the tool across the width of the belt with one hand, while
guiding the tool with the other. Two pairs of rollers – each
featuring a serrated upper and smooth lower roller – clamp the belt
as the serrated rollers grip the top cover and drive the skiver,
pulling a special steel blade through the belting. The skived belt
cover then comes off in one continuous strip.
For maximum, ongoing performance, skivers should be cleaned after
each use and kept in a clean, dry area. Although the tools are
rugged and durable, care should be taken to avoid dropping them.
Blades should be ex- amined, making sure they are sharp and
undamaged. Both top and bottom edges of the blade should be
sharpened with caution and concentration.
Properly selected and used, belt skivers represent a sound
investment. They provide uniform cuts and eliminate the perils and
injury potential as- sociated with cuts with a hand knife. In terms
of both safety and conveyor productivity, skivers are tools that
pay for themselves many times over.
Skiving and Splicing – a Good Combination The process of skiving is
the right choice when splicing your belt. A skived belt reduces the
wear and tear that the fasteners, cleaners, roll- ers and skirting
are subjected to, and promotes prolonged operation and reduced
maintenance. With the easy-to-use, quick operation of today’s
skiver, taking a few extra moments on the front end will save you
time and headaches on the back end. n

Skiving does not weaken the belt because it removes only the
protective top cover, leaving the belt’s carcass – where the
strength of the belt lies – intact. Photo: Flexco

I n the words of a famous celebrity, “It’s not easy being green,”
and after all, what is “being green”? Is it windmills on a hill,
prevent- ing spillage, thousands of solar panels, protecting
endangered spe-
cies, compact fluorescent light bulbs or recycling household
garbage? Of course, the answer would be yes to all the above.
However, when we consider “being green” we should be looking
deeper, especially when we discuss this topic as it applies to the
aggregates industry.
Understand, the intent of this article is not to provide a doctoral
dissertation; it is to provide a few ideas on what the issues are,
why these issues are environmentally related and how producers can
miti- gate the effects of their operation. It is also not designed
to address every aspect of being green.
For our purposes, being green is about reducing your overall ef-
fect on the environment and ultimately taking responsibility for
and inheriting the consequences of that. Let’s take a look at how
aggregate plants can be set up to reduce their environmental
footprint:
• Resource utilization • Mining plans • Material handling • Energy
consumption • Noise • Water usage • Housekeeping • Product
gradation • Product moisture • Road transportation
Environmental Concerns Resources are the reason many producers are
bought out; the curve of available resources and the demand has
been diverging to unsustainable levels in many locations. Often the
reason cities will not allow the devel- opment of new deposits is
that these plans have failed to address the green concerns of the
neighbours. Trucking, for example, is a major source of concern;
but, where reserves are permitted, too often in the past, resources
have been wasted by poor mining plans and inefficient processing
plants.
The review of trucking from the pit to the processing plant versus
in-pit crushing, screening and conveying is ongoing. Arguments for
and against rage on, with each side making claims about efficiency,
cost, etc. I leave it to others to make that call but the
environmental footprint of a property is dramatically affected by
this decision.
High-efficiency motors can be installed and a sensible selection of
the highest-efficiency equipment should be made. Too often an
operator will ask to standardize the size of equipment for
commonality of spares, ignoring, for example, that operating the
same size pump across several applications can mean the difference
between 75% efficiency and 40% efficiency. Consideration should
always be given to the right equipment for the right
application.
Another green saving technique can be the use of gravity – a very
reliable green resource. Elevating material to the top of the plant
and processing down through the plant can result in savings, but
beware! If this process results in marginal performance of, say, a
Cyclone, which operates at lower pressure under gravity when
compared with a pump, one must ask how many tons of useful material
gets rejected as waste just to save a few watts. So, in this case,
it’s the big picture that counts, not making isolated changes and
patting ourselves on the back for sup- posedly “saving” energy . .
. that’s not being green!
Noise is another one of the permit killers. Reducing its impact on
the environment can include rubber/urethane linings and screen
media, enclosures, etc., but this is not a subject for this
article.
Water Usage Water usage can be divided into several areas:
1. Dust mitigation – roads, etc. 2. Dust suppression – crushers
screens, transfer points 3. Losses from the stockpile 4. Losses
from settling ponds
a. Evaporation b. Leakage

As part of a green footprint, it is great to keep dust down within
the plant, but how often do you see trucks dragging wet mud out
onto the public roads after wetting down of the access roads (even
with a wheel wash station)? The unintended consequence of getting
mud on the roads just to keep dust down in the facility hardly
balances out in a green equation from a community
perspective.
Losses of water, resulting from wet sand being placed on the stock-
pile, are a constant headache for both availability and “housekeep-
ing.” When water spews across roads and into gulleys as the
stockpile drains, it complicates the site's water management scheme
in addition to losing the water. Today’s use of dewatering screens
can reduce the moisture of material in the pile by at least 10% and
allow materials to be available much earlier. How often do you see
trucks going down the road with streams of water coming out the
back because there wasn’t enough dried material on the stockpile?
Then add the moisture penal- ties at the concrete/asphalt plant.
Today’s picture is typically much better than this, but less
moisture is always desirable at the stockpile.
Losses at the pond are hard to control. Evaporation in some places
amounts to acre-feet of water lost. Recycling the water at the
plant with a thickener and an adjacent water tank typically results
in an 85% recovery rate and can reduce losses dramatically, as well
as reduce power consumption used pumping to and from the ponds.
Thickeners are becoming the equipment of the day at many plants in
dry or envi- ronmentally sensitive areas. The resulting
concentrated waste slurry (thickener underflow) can be sent to
containment ponds in far smaller volumes and decanted/recycled as
further settling occurs.
Further treatment of this thickener underflow can be effected by
the use of presses. Now before you all cringe thinking of the
nightmares you would have, there is newer (and ironically, older)
technology at hand. The recessed plate press is a device that will
immediately return easy- to-handle “cakes” of solids and recovered
process water that returns to the thickener for further processing.
Thickener underflow is typical at 30-35%, or the consistency of
thick tomato soup (although underflows of higher densities can be
achieved, most operators are uncomfortable running at higher
densities), and press cake can be 25% moisture or bet- ter. It is
the easily handled cakes as a truckable solid that attract many to
this technology. Additionally, you do away with your waste ponds
and all the spillage liability that goes with them, a great
environmental – read: green – initiative. Belt filter presses fit
the bill to dewater thickener underflow, but in the long run the
added floculant costs (a significant cost versus the zero usage in
a recessed plate press) and additional man-
power will often not give you the green profile desired. The
capture of storm water has been a subject of discussion, with
a few plants set up to pump this water into a thickener at a
controlled rate after capture in a containment pond. This comes
with its own dif- ficulties, but is worthy of consideration.
Efficiency can be different things to different folks – there is
efficient use of energy, but there is also the efficiency of the
equipment. Use of efficient equipment can make a huge difference in
the overall green foot- print of a plant. Consider the differences
between a dewatering screw and a cyclone/dewatering screen based
plant. Not only does the latter return more usable solids to the
product stream, but it also results in water sav- ings as described
above because of the resulting drier products.
Product gradation is a harder thing to put a finger on . . . while
there are specifications that producers must meet, systems such as
recipe plants, where materials are graded into discrete fractions
then reblended to create exactly the right blend for the job, can
hugely affect longevity of a road or structure. It becomes part of
the green footprint of the industry. This can also result in
significant savings because less cement is used in the concrete –
both a green benefit and money to the bottom line.
In Summary Summarizing what is “green” for the aggregate producer
is a matter of an across-the-board approach. Don’t think that
because you’re saving energy here, when you are wasting product
there, you are green (you took the time and energy to mine the
material and get it to near-product stage). Do the math – 5TPH to
the scale-house versus in a pond – it hits your wallet and doesn't
in the long run fit a green policy.
The “green effects” and long-term returns of efficient equipment
can greatly outweigh the perceived savings of small and isolated
decisions about being “green.” Use of cyclone/dewatering screen
based plants, thickeners and water tanks, and even presses, can
have great impact on the environment, your company’s profile in the
com- munity and the industry as a whole, and can be very beneficial
to your bottom line. n
