Peace Family! I have been a part of this wonderful place that most refer to as the Peace Center since 1976. I have been both a witness to and a participant in its constant growth and program enhancements. I have seen us meet arising needs head on with determination and innovation while maintaining our core programs. Throughout, we have stayed true to our guiding principles while refi ning our existing programs and developing new services to address emerging issues. When unemployment in the automobile industry hit hard in the late 70’s, we developed a jobs program. In the 80’s, we developed substance abuse services to address the crack epidemic. We added breakfast programs when the schools did not have funding for them and children in public housing were going to school hungry. As the need for post-secondary education became an integral part of success in life, we incorporated the College and Career Prep program to help generational change. This is what makes us unique! Peace programs fi nd ways to remove the barriers that exist for too many of our neighbors, friends and family.
In addition to the hundreds of individuals we had the opportunity to serve, 2014 was a year of re-structuring, refl ection and planning. Information gathered from our Staff and Board retreat in May inspired us to develop some additional strategies to assist the families and children of our community. Over the next fi ve years, we will help to move the needle for the 150 families who are involved in our wrap-around programs and services, assisting them to move towards their greatness! The goals of our organizational fi ve-year strategic plan are to support more of our families in their journey toward self suffi ciency. This means that we will support more children and adults to advance their post-secondary education and provide more help to parents to enhance their parenting skills.
Ultimately, the focus of the next fi ve years at Peace is to help individuals move ABOVE AND BEYOND their current situation as we help to build stronger families and a stronger community! In this annual report you will read about some of the new initiatives we’ve recently put in place to make this happen, as well as some of our existing programs that we have expanded to address the needs that arise. These programs, such as the Ninth Grade Academy, the Family Enrichment Program, the College and Career Prep Club and our Community Literacy Collaborations are essential parts of our vision of the future – a future guided by some tremendous staff people who make my job so much easier.
However, with our eye on the horizon, we must not forget our past. Everything that we have accomplished in the past 44 years has been because of the support of our donors and supporters. You, the Peace Family! Together we have helped change the lives of thousands – what a legacy!
Thank you for your assistance in our eff orts to break the cycle of poverty. We hope we can count on you once again in 2015 as we move ABOVE AND BEYOND!
In Service,
Bonnie Billups, Jr.Executive Director

Peace has a lways had a focus on e lementar y youth and i ts REACH af ter school program is the cornerstone of a l l the Youth S er vices the organizat ion provides. Whi le i t i s one of our o ldest programs, REACH cont inues to evolve to meet the needs of our communit y.
REACH saw an expansion of sc ience ac t iv i t ies in 2014 thanks to one of our ver y suppor t ive volunteers, Barbara Nevins-Soong, who added sc ience projec ts, demonstrat ions and exper iments for a l l grade levels throughout the year. This was in addit ion to the n e a r l y 4 , 0 0 0 h o u r s o f a ca d e m i c t u t o r i n g provided by our volunteers to our REACH par t ic ipants. Thanks to these volunteers and our creat ive staf f members, 2014 saw Peace once more move the needle for our youth.

This year, Leah Logan came on board as the AFY Coordinator, overseeing ser vices to 5 7 m i d d l e - s c h o o l e r s t h r o ug h o u t 2 0 1 4 . As an expansion of what AFY does, Leah has led the charge for the program to be more involved in each of the middle schools we ser ve. I n 2014, Peace staf f members attended parent information nights and academic meet ings, fac i l i tated dia logue with teachers, and obser ved students dur ing c lassroom vis i ts . AFY a lso increased i ts focus on promoting the var ious spor ts and c lubs that are avai lable to students in their schools as a means of generat ing greater student involvement in ex tracurr icular ac t iv i t ies. This i s a successful step towards gett ing students to par t ic ipate in healthy, enr iching exper iences that help to foster a commitment to academic achievement .
M ark ing i ts 7th year of operat ion, the 2014 Leadership Development Camp (LDC ) saw 3 8 yo u n g p e o p l e a t t e n d t h i s s u m m e r . Each student was of fered a curr iculum that taught the tools necessar y to be posit ive role models and leaders to their younger peers and s ibl ings. The camp focused on teaching these young people about what i t means to be a leader and the qual i t ies of successful leadership. Through var ious exerc ises and ac t iv i t ies, these young people of ten demonstrated their personal integr i t y and responsibi l i t y on the way toward becoming successful leaders and outstanding young adults .
O ver the course of the s ix-week program, LDC par t ic ipants got the oppor tunit y to explore di f ferent par ts of the Univers i t y of M ichigan with v is i ts to the Law School , the Col lege of Engineer ing, the School of S ocia l Work , the Natural H istor y Museum and the Depar tment of Afr ican American Studies. Peace is a lways on the lookout for emerging needs and how to proac t ively address them. O ver the past few years, i t s tar ted to become apparent that many of the teens in Peace programs were having di f f icult y with the t ransit ion bet ween eighth and ninth grade. Whi le these students might eventual ly become interested in pursuing a col lege educat ion, many had a l ready dug themselves a into a hole with bad academic per formances in ninth grade. With this in mind, Peace launched the N inth Grade Academy in 2014 headed up by Volunteer Coordinator/Youth Specia l ist Mar yAnn Meyers to provide these young people the suppor t they need. The program runs four days a week with specia l tutor ing ass istance provided by a par tnership with Tel lur ide House and the Univers i t y of M ichigan t wice per week . T h i s i n a ug u ra l ye a r s a w 1 2 n i n t h g ra d e r s s u p p o r t e d through the program with great in i t ia l results . We expec t this program to become an integral par t of our Youth Ser vices as i t ass ists in the ver y impor tant t ransit ion bet ween middle school and high school .
The young people that Peace ser ves of ten want to go to col lege, but t ypical ly don’t have the guidance and suppor t needed to take the proper courses in high school , maintain a good grade point average, and complete the proper paper work for admiss ion to a col lege or univers i t y – much less the suppor t needed to succeed once they get there. The Col lege & Career Prep Club (CCPC ) encourages these high school students to aspire to and prepare for col lege or career t ra ining. Once they are enrol led in a h igher educat ion program, we cont inue to provide suppor t to make sure they succeed and begin careers af ter graduat ion. One of the pr imar y func t ions of the CCPC is to take students on col lege v is i ts in order to excite them about the poss ibi l i t ies of h igher educat ion. Dear Peace Family,I am so excited about the work Peace Neighborhood Center has done over the course of 2014. This year, my fi rst as Board President, I was given the opportunity to be involved in some incredible discussions with staff members, board members and supporters throughout the community. The focus of most of these conversations was on how Peace can continue to do what it does, have the successes that it continues to have and expand where and when it is necessary to meet the needs of our community. Unfortunately, that need continues to grow as the income gap in our area widens.
Thankfully, Peace Neighborhood Center stands as a pillar in Ann Arbor to combat the issues that come with economic diffi culties and is armed with strategies capable of breaking the cycle of poverty. As members of the Ann Arbor community, it is incumbent upon us to keep Peace running, just as Peace in turn helps those in need. It makes me smile to see so many of you listed in this
