A Note from the Stage Director
Welcome to our spring production. The role of the stage director is both challenging and fun. You are responsible for the “vision” of the entire production. These two operas, in particular, posed a unique set of issues. Both stories are beloved fairy tales (although one has been modified a bit). That left me with two options. I could try to make the production more like “real life” or I could try to bring you into a land, “Once upon a time.” I chose the latter. These operas, especially The Three Billy Goats Gruff, were written to allow children to enjoy this wonderful art form and we hope these performances will allow children from 5 to 105 do that very thing.
When Little Red Riding Hood begins, we meet the actor who plays the Big Bad Wolf as he gets ready for his first “furry” appearance. Interestingly, his human persona is quite different from his wolf counterpart. From there, the story unfolds much the way you remember it. The story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, on the other hand, was adapted using famous musical excerpts from other operas and is meant to be performed at schools. To further enhance the school appeal of this opera, it now deals with the theme of bullying by changing the role of the Troll to a fourth, mean billy goat. When designing the look and feel of these productions, I chose to create a world that looks like a storybook, specifically a pop-‐up book. The cornerstone of this storybook is the author, who comes out before the operas begin to write her thoughts on this world in her journal. A world where you can abandon your “adultness” and submerse yourself in these timeless stories that you enjoyed when you were a child. Thank you for coming and supporting our productions. We hope you enjoy the operas.
