It’s spring clean up time at the City of Manitowoc’s Evergreen Cemetery. The Cemetery
Division asks your help in clearing all winter decorations in order to help maintain Evergreen Cemetery’s park-like beauty. Lot owners are respectfully asked to remove their
winter decorations by April 15, 2015. Any items not removed by April 15th will be disposed of by cemetery staff. With over 28,000 graves to maintain, the support of families who observe the cemetery rules is greatly appreciated
Some rules to keep in mind:
Beginning May 15, 2015, new decorations or flowers may be placed on the gravesites.
No perennials or plants which have thorns, thistles, or burs are allowed. Annual flowers can be planted in baskets, urns, or in the ground in a flowerbed. Any
flower urns not planted for three consecutive years, which are not part of a permanent marker will be removed. The maximum size of a flowerbed is one foot away from the marker and to the width of
the marker. No fences, above ground edging, gravel, lava stone, shredded bark or similar materials
may be placed on gravesites. Dirt mounds in the flowerbed or by the marker are not allowed. Decorations that are made of glass or other materials that shatters easily are also not
allowed. Up to two solar lights may be placed at each marker. If flags are placed in the ground, the cloth/plastic portion of the
flag must be at least 12‖ above ground level.
The complete set of Rules & Regulations can be found on the Pricing & Policies page for Evergreen Cemetery on the City of Manitowoc website (www.manitowoc.org.) For additional information, call the

huge seller at our Holiday Fair and we need a few good people to help keep it going! The Senior Center will provide the recipes,
ingredients and space. Volunteering as ―soup chefs‖ would only require about 6-8
hours of your time in November. If you are interested in whipping up the magic, stop at the desk and let us know!
We also have several other volunteer opportunities available for the Holiday Fair
including: book/puzzle sale, food servers, bake sale (you can bake or sell), bread bakers (we supply the
frozen bread, you just need to bake it), raffle basket coordinators (&
donations), set up helpers, and advertisers
to help Spread the word!
D o you love playing BINGO? If so,
we need you to help keep the game alive at the Senior Center!
Volunteering doesn't mean you cannot play along. It just requires that you arrive a bit early to set up the cards, maybe prepare the
coffee and supplies, collect the money and be ready to hand out the winnings during the game. Show your love for the game and help
us keep this popular activity alive and well at the senior
center. Please sign up today at the front counter to become a Bingo Volunteer! We may
need you to start right away or put you on a list to help out
with future games!
Tornado Shelter Alternate Tornado Shelter 15
The Manitowoc Fire Department will be at the Manitowoc
Senior Center on Thursday, April 16 at 1:45pm
to conduct our annual tornado drill. This coincides with the
Statewide drill taking place at the same time.
Tornado drills are important for keeping us prepared and safe in
the event of severe weather. We encourage everyone to
participate in the drill
on that day.
This statewide tornado drill will take place even if
the sky is cloudy, dark and/or rainy. If actual severe storms are expected on April 16, the
tornado drill will be rescheduled for Friday, April 17 at the same time.
Did you know that Manitowoc County has had 25 recorded tornados since 1844?
To help keep yourself and your family safe in severe weather: Develop a plan for you and your family for home, work, school and outdoors. Know the
safest shelter areas in multiple locations Have frequent drills Keep a disaster supply kit in your home including water, non-perishable food, first-aid
kit, NOAA weather radio, flashlight and special items for children, pets and elderly family members. Be sure your weather radio is working properly. Spring is a great time to install fresh
batteries. In the event of severe weather:
In a home or building, avoid windows. Move to a basement and get under a sturdy table or the stairs. If a basement is not available, move to a small interior room or hallway on the lowest level and cover yourself with towels, blankets or pillows.
If outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If you cannot get to shelter, stay in your vehicle with the seatbelt on and put your head below the windows. Do not seek shelter
under an overpass. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes. You should leave a mobile home and go to a designated storm shelter or lowest floor of a nearby sturdy
building.
What is the difference between a severe weather watch vs warning?
A watch means conditions are right for dangerous weather. In other words, a "watch" means watch out for what the weather could do, be ready to act. A warning means that the
dangerous weather is threatening the area . A tornado warning means be ready to take shelter immediately if there are any indications a tornado is approaching.

Take Charge Tip: How do you know if you’re getting enough vitamins? Why
not just rely on vitamin supplements? Most health authorities recommend get-ting vitamins from food rather than supplements, with some exceptions, in-
cluding pregnant women, seniors or others at risk for specific shortages.

17 The Nutrition Exchange with Alyssa Weber, RDN, CD
Dear Alyssa, So many of my friends tell me they are on a “diet.” They are eating more of this and less of that. They are buying diet bars and drinks. It’s all so confusing! What is the best “diet” to follow? I don’t want to spend a lot of money either.
Sincerely, Confused About “Diets” Dear Confused, Please don’t be confused. Eating does not have to be confusing. Eating should be enjoyable and exciting! But I can see why you would be confused; there are so many fad diets out there.
There are two different definitions that people typically think of when they hear the word “diet”: 1. The kinds of food that a person habitually eats or 2. The food that one restricts themselves to in order to lose weight. I want to focus on definition number 1. I believe in creating new eating habits that will last a life time rather than changing your eating habits just for the duration of the “diet”. I encourage you to eat a diet full of REAL food that is minimally processed. Since May is International Mediterranean Diet Month, let’s focus on that diet. Even though it is called called a diet, it really is a way of eating that leads to a healthy heart and healthy weight. The Mediterranean Diet is the typical way people eat in the Mediterranean countries of the world. After much research, it was found that people in this part of the world have a much lower risk of heart disease, increased life span, healthier weight, improved brain health, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and more! So what is the Mediterranean Diet? The Mediterranean Diet encourages an increase of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, fish and olive oil. A glass of red wine is served with most meals. Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables are a great choice. They are full of the vitamins and minerals that our body needs. They provide our body with carbohydrates for energy and fiber for satiety and good digestion. Limit sweets and enjoy fruit for dessert!
Consume mostly whole grains: whole grain bread and pasta, brown rice, oatmeal, etc. Whole grains provide a great source of fiber. Look at the food label for the word “whole” as one of the first ingredients to ensure you are getting a whole grain. Include nuts, seeds and legumes which are a great source of protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Some examples include hummus (made from garbanzo beans), lentils, walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, and nut butters. Choose olive oil, another healthy fat. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats which can improve heart health and cholesterol levels. Our bodies need fat so go for the healthy kind as often as possible. Avocados also contain healthy fats. Several times each week consume fatty fish. The fats these fish contain are heart and brain healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Fatty fish include salmon, sardines and mackerel. Avoid deep fried fish; instead bake, grill or sauté. Eggs are encouraged a few times each week. Poultry and red meat are included occasionally. Dairy is included in the Mediterranean Diet with an emphasis on cultured dairy such as yogurt, with beneficial bacteria. Be aware of portion sizes. The Mediterranean Diet contains foods naturally high in fat (olives, olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds). Even though the foods contain the heart-healthy fats, a calorie is still a calorie even if it comes from a healthy food. Season foods with antioxidant rich herbs and spices instead of salt. Besides the actual food, the Mediterranean Diet also encourages eating meals with others, staying active and reducing stress. The Mediterranean Diet does not contain any miracle food. It simply is a healthy way of eating. Changing the way you eat can be difficult; it takes a while to make something a habit. Remember to start slow and look to others for support.

Do you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure? Have
members of your family suffered from these ailments? Do you have a poor diet? If you answer ―yes‖ to any of these ques-
tions, you may want to consider being screened for your risk of stroke through the services of Life Line Screening. Life
Line Screening uses ultrasound technology to view the plaque
build up in your carotid arteries, the main arteries that carry blood to the brain. Blockages in these arteries are a leading cause of stroke. We are pleased to host this Life Line Screen-ing event on Friday, May 8, 2015 at the Manitowoc Senior Center. Register for a Wellness
Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to reg-ister for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129,
please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

We started out the Tea with a rousing rendition of ―An Anthem for
Ladies Who Kick up Their Heels‖, as we continue our new tradition of singing at our Teas. Hostess Delores Boeckman scheduled SGT Bruce Jacobs, who
talked to us of the different scams and fraud schemes that are perpetuated on the public and especially the elderly. The presentation was very enlightening and scary. He did mention an Aluma Wallet for protecting your credit cards
from being scanned. They can be found on the internet. The overall message is to be on guard at all times. Diane Cisler, Evie Schnieder and Gloria Mankins helped Delores with a very good
lunch and some delightfully green desserts. Everything was delicious. A new hostess list was started. The Red Hatters who were at the Tea signed up for the
month they wanted. Terry called the ones absent to get them on the schedule. The new schedule starts in April 2015 and goes thru March of 2016. Copies will be at the April Tea. It was voted on, and passed unanimously, If a hostess is unable to make something
for the snack at a tea, if they want to , they can share the cost with the other hostesses. This way everyone helps out a little bit.
Joyce Morrison is taking on the Table Setting project. She would like your ideas and if you have any Red Hat stuff you would like to be used, if possible, let her know. Her phone number is 905-1429. This should be a fun project for everyone. Joyce would like a picture
of all the Lakeshore Red Hatters for the wall. If you have any ideas as to how we can all get together or some one who can Photo shop let her know. Shirley Funk is asking for someone to take over sending greeting cards for illness, fu-
nerals, etc. She will teach you how . Her phone number is 682-1734. Bonnie Willems brought a guest, Lorrie Vaness, from Brillion. She joined our
group. Welcome Lorrie. The hostesses for April are Joyce Morrison and Berdeva Fischer . The luncheon is at Friar Tucks on Thursday April
23rd . Meet at 11:30. The picture is of Red Hat shoes at the Victorian Tea —> Have a great Red Hat day! Terry

Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking, is directed by Academy Award winner James Marsh (Man on Wire). In 1963, as a
