APPENDIX I. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES DATA, DEEP SEA DRILLING PROJECT LEG 93,SITES 603, 604, AND 6051

On Leg 93, physical properties measurements weremade of vertical and horizontal sonic velocity, acoustic im-pedance, vane shear strength, and penetrometer strength,using procedures discussed in Boyce (1973, 1976, 1984).Gravimetric procedures were used to determine wet-bulkdensity, grain density, porosity, and water content, usingeither the chunk method (Boyce, 1973) or the cylindermethod (Boyce, 1984). Calcium carbonate content ofLeg 93 sediments was determined by the carbonate bomb(Muller and Gastner, 1971; Dunn, 1980).
SONIC VELOCITY
Compressional-wave velocities were measured on theHamilton Frame Velocimeter by timing a 400-kHz pulsebetween two transducers and by measuring the distanceacross the sample with a dial gauge. Velocities in uncon-solidated sediments were generally measured on the splitcore. Correction factors established by Boyce (1976) wereused to compensate for increased thickness and traveltime (0.242 cm and 1.108 µs, respectively) caused by thepolycarbonate liner. For consolidated sediments, a piecewas removed from the core and trimmed carefully toform two parallel surfaces to insure good contact withthe transducer heads. Salt water was used to make anacoustic contact between the sample and the transduc-ers. On indurated sediments, measurements were madeof both horizontal (perpendicular to the core axis) andvertical (parallel to the core axis) sonic velocities. Bymeasuring aluminum, Lucite, and brass standards ofknown lengths and assumed velocities, correction fac-tors were determined for the oscilloscope.
Horizontal sonic velocities were determined for Hole603 sediments (Table 1). Both horizontal and vertical ve-locity were measured in Hole 603B (Table 2) and Hole605 (Table 5). Vertical velocities were determined forHole 603C (Table 3) and Hole 604 (Table 4) sediments.Acoustic impedance of Leg 93 sediments was determinedfrom the vertical sonic velocity, and impedance data arelisted for Holes 603B (Table 2), 603C (Table 3), 604 (Ta-ble 4), and 605 (Table 5).

VANE SHEAR AND PENETROMETERSTRENGTH
A Soiltest Torvane and a Soiltest CL-700 Pocket Pen-etrometer were used to determine the shear strength andthe unconfined compression strength of Leg 93 sedi-ments and sedimentary rocks. The Torvane blades wereburied about 0.5 cm below the sediment surface of thesplit core halves, with the vane axis oriented parallel tothe bedding plane of the sediment. The Torvane washand-rotated at a rate designed to reach failure in about10 s with constant loading. Measurements were made inthe least-disturbed sections of the split core, parallel tothe core axis, and were discontinued when cracking ofthe sediments was observed, indicating failure by frac-turing rather than by shear. Vane shear data was deter-mined for sediments in Cores 603-1 and -2 (Table 1),and for the entire recovered section of Hole 603C (Table3) and Hole 604 (Table 4). Two blades on the Torvanefractured in the last sample from Hole 604, preventingthe determination of shear strength values for Hole 605samples.
The Pocket Penetrometer measured compressionstrength parallel to bedding. It was pushed into undis-turbed sections of the split core, perpendicular to thesplit face of the core. Unconfined compression strengthwas determined for sediments from Hole 604 (Table 4)and for Cores 605-3 to -6 (Table 5).
GRAVIMETRIC PROCEDURES
Wet-bulk density, grain density, porosity, and watercontent were all determined for sample intervals at whichsonic velocities were determined, generally at intervalsof 1.5 m (one sample per core section). The cylindertechnique (Boyce, 1984) was used on soft or stiff sedi-ments. Samples were taken with stainless steel or brasscylinders of known volume and weight, and were tightlyenclosed to retain moisture until they could be weighed.For indurated sediment and hard rock, the gravimetricchunk technique (Boyce, 1973) was used, in which sam-ples cut out of the core for measurement of sonic veloci-ties were stored under seawater. Chunk volume was de-termined by weighing both in air and suspended underwater.
Sample volume and weight yield the wet-bulk densitywithout a buoyancy correction. Wet-water content andporosity were calculated from the water loss after drying

at 110°C for 24 hr. Water content is related to the weightof the wet samples and therefore is defined here as wet-water content. All wet-water content and porosity datawere corrected for salt content, using the correction fac-tors for seawater (Boyce, 1976). The approximate graindensity was calculated from the gravimetric data. Poros-ity was calculated by assuming that the sediments werewater-saturated. This may not be true for all samples,because some undergo adiabatic expansions if the insitu pressure is released when cores are brought from theseafloor to the shipboard laboratory. The effect of thevolume increase of the samples due to elastic rebound,caused by the removal of in situ overburden pressure(Hamilton, 1976), was not taken into account.
CARBONATE CONTENT
Calcium carbonate percentages of Leg 93 sedimentswere determined by the "Karbonat-Bombe" procedureof Muller and Gastner (1971), modified to eliminate thegas vapor pressure effect of using concentrated hydro-chloric acid in the bombs (Dunn, 1980). Dried samplesof sediment and rock were ground, and approximately1 g of sample was reacted with concentrated HC1 in aclosed cylinder. The resulting increase in pressure wasmeasured on a manometer gauge. Pressure increase causedby formation of CO2 gas is proportional to the concen-
tration of CaCO3 in the sample, and carbonate percent-ages of samples were determined by analyzing standardsof known carbonate content.
