SANDUSKY POLICE DEPARTMENT
Greeting Friends !
In 2017, it was the year of anticipation and preparation before the City Bicentennial celebration in 2018.
The police department was very busy with training this year, as the State of Ohio had 20 hours of mandated training that each officer had to complete. Overall, the officers of the department received 2,795 hours of training. The topics included Trauma Informed Policing, Practical Application of Force, Blue Courage, Legal Updates and General Law Enforcement topics.
The agency has continued with community policing efforts to build, maintain, and foster relationships with our citizens and visitors. This was the second year of the Strategic Plan implementation of all officers engaging in community policing efforts. We continued the model of getting officers out of their cruisers or from behind their desks and interacting with the community. Three strategies we had started in 2016 were the business walks, neighborhood walks, and park walks. In 2017, officers logged business walks (1,881), park walks (1,450), and neighborhood walks (1,158).
The road patrol worked extremely hard and were short staffed for much of the year, due to retirements or officers leaving employment. We were able to make it through the hiring process and hired five (5) new officers during the second half of the year. Each officer has an unique path to our agency and we are thankful that they chose us and joined our department. I look forward to watching them develop and their contributions to our community.
A newly created “Nuisance Officer” position was created and filled in October. The position will allow an officer to be dedicated to nuisance issues working with code enforcement to eliminate blighted properties in our community, along with animal calls that have an impact on the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
SANDUSKY POLICE DEPARTMENT
Our department and officers continue to remain focused and cognizant on the relationship the police department has with the community. The 4th annual National Night Out – Touch a Truck event was a huge success this year once again. We counted over 6,000 people in attendance. Our community impact officers continue to attend many events. Community engagement and involvement over the last four years has been and will be our focus, as we continue to serve and protect this community.
In 2018, the department will remain focused on striving to positively impact the Bi-Centennial Strategic Plan, along with the Neighborhood Initiative that has been rolled out for investment in six neighborhoods in the community. We look forward to continued partnerships with our community business partners, citizens, and other city staff as we look forward to the cities Bicentennial celebration.
Thanks to everyone for your continued support of the police department and stay safe!
Respectfully,
John Orzech
Chief of Police
