Our School Vision
St. Joan of Arc is a Catholic parish primary school located in the bayside suburb of Brighton.
We are a family-oriented community, which works together to create an inclusive atmosphere
striving to inspire excellence.
The community of St. Joan of Arc aims to:
Lead children to know that faith is at the centre of our learning and to foster a love of
God through prayer, relationships, Catholic traditions, connection with parish and
through living out our school motto ‘Faith in Action’.
Develop relationships that are influenced by the values promoted by Jesus in the
Gospels, which reflect our contemporary Catholic beliefs.
Provide learning that is a continual and developmental process where all students have
the right to a contemporary, relevant and comprehensive education that equips them to
be lifelong learners.
Staff are committed to recognizing individual needs, ensuring the opportunity for each
child to develop their maximum potential: socially, emotionally, academically, spiritually,
creatively and physically.
Provide a learning environment that is safe and recognises the partnerships between
parents and staff, where wellbeing is nurtured, differences are respected and a sense of
welcome and acceptance pervade the school.
Inspire, empower and support all members of our school community to be leaders and
learners, sharing the responsibility to improve student learning through innovative,
collaborative and creative practice.
Develop, value and foster positive relationships between students, parents, teachers,
families, parish and the broader community.
Prepare children to be critical thinkers for participation in an ever changing Australian
society and global community.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 4
School Overview
St Joan of Arc is a co-educational parish primary school in the Melbourne bayside suburb of
Brighton. Established in 1921 under the guidance of the Presentation Sisters, the school is now
governed by a lay principal and staff. St. Joan of Arc is a suburban school situated off Beach
Road on Dendy Street, Brighton. The school has a current enrolment of 375 students with over
90% of students Catholic. The school has been at capacity in recent years with fourteen straight
classes of 26 (two classes of each year level) with waiting lists in most year levels.
Our buildings consist of fourteen permanent classrooms and an extensive student and staff
resource centre with a library, Art room, LOTE room, atrium areas and a multipurpose hall. In
2014, we saw the completion of an extensive building program that included five new
classrooms, refurbishment of four classrooms, structural changes to the library and new
administration and staff facilities. We have also spent considerable resources increasing play
space. The Parish has been extremely generous, donating a large portion of land to develop
extra play areas for the children.
St Joan of Arc School promotes gospel values and develops knowledge and understanding of
Catholic faith, doctrine and tradition. The school supports students to become successful
learners, confident individuals and active and informed citizens. We provide a comprehensive
and inclusive curriculum built on essential skills and authentic contemporary learning that is
interactive and innovative, allowing students to think critically, work creatively, analyse
information and solve problems. We cater for a variety of learning styles, backgrounds,
perspectives and interests through a range of extra-curricular programs such as Visual and
Performing Arts, Japanese, Sport and Camps. There is also a biennial School Production and
Art Show.
The school is an important part of the parish and celebrates school and class masses every
term. The children in Years 3, 4 and 6 celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation, First
Eucharist and Confirmation throughout the year. The parish and the school share a very strong
relationship. St Joan of Arc is very fortunate to have the wonderful support of our Parish Priest
Fr Martin Dixon, who is a visible and valued presence within the school community.
Students’ individual needs continue to be a focus at St Joan of Arc. Significant professional
development continues to be undertaken to improve staff capacity to analyse assessment to
inform teaching practice. As a result, a number of programs have been put in place to cater for
student needs. Programs have been supported in the classroom through intervention and
enhancement run by specialist teachers throughout the school.
As part of our commitment to personalised learning, the school has invested heavily in staffing.
We have a Third Teacher Program, which runs from Prep to Year 4, where we have three
teachers working across the two classes in each year level during English and Mathematics.
The has also been significant investment in the areas of ICT infrastructure, hardware and
ongoing professional development for staff. All students in Years 3 to 6 are allocated a
Chromebook, in addition to 100 iPads spread throughout Years P to 2.
St Joan of Arc School Brighton
2018 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 5
St Joan of Arc provides students with a friendly, caring, supportive and safe environment that
maximises their engagement, sense of belonging and connectedness to school. We develop
social and emotional learning for students and provide early intervention for those students at
risk both academically and socially.
We promote a family-friendly environment and build strong community partnerships by
welcoming and actively encouraging a wide variety of participation in the life of the school. At St
Joan of Arc, the positive involvement of parents in all aspects of their child's learning is
welcomed and encouraged. In recognising that the family is the most significant influence upon
an individual, learning is seen as an ongoing partnership between home and school.
Brighton is a bayside suburb where family life includes many sporting activities. There is a high
participation rate by families in the many sporting clubs represented in the area. This is also
indicative of families at St. Joan of Arc, with many of our students participating in after school
and weekend sports. Parental support and commitment in the life of the school is significant.
Families at St. Joan of Arc come from both within and outside of the Parish boundaries, with
students coming from Brighton and surrounding suburbs. In recent years, there has been less
children from outside the parish boundaries due to enrolment pressure.

Principal’s Report
This Annual Report summarises a highly successful year for the school and briefly describes
what the school will be trying to achieve in the future. The Annual Report keeps the school
community informed and assists with planning. Planning is instrumental to the success of the
school, with enrolments continuing to flourish with waiting lists in place for most grade levels. In
2019, the current student population is 372. During the school year, many sets of data are
collected and analysed by the school; particularly student achievement levels at all grade levels,
in English and Mathematics. To gain a full understanding of how our key stakeholders feel we
are performing; parents, students and staff are surveyed to ascertain how each of these groups
perceive the school is operating. A summary of this data is contained within the Annual Report.
The 2018 school year at St. Joan of Arc was again very busy. Our children continue to do well
academically, on the sporting field, and in other extracurricular activities. Perhaps the highlight
of the 2018 school year was the school production of ‘Madagascar the Musical’, performed over
two nights. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the school as a whole, in a brilliant,
vibrant production that was enjoyed by the audiences and performers alike. Academically our
children continue to shine, our school community is extremely proud of the attitudes displayed
by our students in their academic pursuit. The success of the children is a combination of the
talented and professional teaching staff at the school and the support the children receive at
home from their families. As a school, we must celebrate all achievements, however we must
also strive to continue to improve in everything we do. We are confident that the initiatives we
have put into place across the school will result in continued success and improvement in our
students.
Social Justice continues to be a high priority in the school and the school continues to support
the work of Sr. Frances Boston and the people of Sefhare, Botswana. In 2018, money raised by
the children continued to support the health and educational needs of the children in the village.
The school has also established a relationship with the village of Aitape in Papua New Guinea,
following a visit from members of the school’s leadership team. The school is working to support
the five schools in Aitape.
I would like to thank the students of St. Joan of Arc for their hard work and enthusiasm. I
particularly commend them for the way in which they model our school motto “Faith in Action”,
demonstrated through the way they strive to do their best and in the way they support each
other as friends and peers.
Education today is truly a partnership between parents and teachers. St Joan of Arc continues
to be a wonderful community. I thank the parents, staff and students for their continued support.

Our student survey data has been relatively consistent over the past four years. In 2018, work
continued with the students on developing resilience, as well as strategies for managing anxiety
and building self-esteem. There has been significant growth in the areas of teacher empathy,
stimulating environment and student morale. We are particularly proud of the increase in
student motivation and learning confidence.
Student Attendance In the Parent Handbook, procedures are outlined to parents as to expectations for absent
children.
If children are sick, parents are required to phone or email the school.
If children are absent for more than two days without notice the school will contact
parents.
If there is a pattern of non-attendance, the Principal and Student Wellbeing Coordinator
will meet with the parents.
The school monitors school absences and attendance by sending out text messages at
10.00am

Child Safe Standards
The school reviewed all policies and procedures in the area of Child Safety throughout 2018.
The following principles underpin our commitment to Child Safety at St Joan of Arc:
All students deserve, as a fundamental right, safety and protection from all forms of
abuse and neglect.
Our school works in partnership with families and the community to ensure that they are
engaged in decision-making processes, particularly those that have an impact on child
safety and protection.
All students have the right to a thorough and systematic education in all aspects of
personal safety, in partnership with their parents/guardians/caregivers.
All adults in our school, including teaching and non-teaching staff, clergy, volunteers,
and contractors, have a responsibility to care for children and young people, to promote
their wellbeing and to protect them from any kind of harm or abuse.
The policies, guidelines and codes of conduct for the care, wellbeing and protection of
students are based on honest, respectful and trusting relationships between adults and
children and young people.
Policies and practices demonstrate compliance with legislative requirements and
cooperation with the Church, governments, the police and human services agencies.
All persons involved in situations where harm is suspected or disclosed must be treated
with sensitivity, dignity and respect.
Staff, clergy, volunteers, contractors, parents and students should feel free to raise
concerns about child safety, knowing school leadership will take these seriously.
Appropriate confidentiality will be maintained, with information being provided to those
who have a right or a need to be informed, legally or pastorally.
