A Message from the Superintendent
The mission of Chatham County Schools, in partnership with the home and community, is to graduate literate, responsible citizens.
A competent staff will provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum in a safe and nurturing environment.
Board of Education
The 2013-2014 school year marked my first year as Superintendent of Chatham County Schools, and I am delighted to report that our students are continuing to move in a positive direction. Student achievement is the central goal of any educational institution. In Chatham County Schools, we are pleased to report the following academic highlights for 2013-2014:
• 17 of our 17 schools (100%) met or exceeded growth expectations• District composite for math and reading out-performed NC results at 3-8• 8 schools out-performed NC results in EOG Reading• 7 schools out-performed NC results in EOG College/Career Ready Math• 7 schools out-performed NC results in EOG College/Career Ready Science• 3 high schools had a higher 4-year graduation rate than the state• CCS had a higher 5-year graduation rate than the state• Chatham County Schools out-performed NC EOC College/Career Ready results in Math I, Biology, English II and composite score on the ACT & WorkKeys
Chatham County continues to demonstrate an impressive collaboration between school and community. Our County Commissioners continue to hold education as a top priority in funding and support. The working
relationship between our Board of Education and the County Commissioners is the envy of many communities in North Carolina. In addition, our partnerships with the Chatham Education Foundation and the PTA Thrift stores continue to provide supplemental support to our academic and extracurricular endeavors. The schools have excellent relationships with area businesses and residential communities and regularly have a robust list of volunteers to work with our students.
Moving forward, we are eager to embark on all of the new initiatives we’ve put in place to advance student achievement such as: a focused implementation of Responsiveness to Instruction (RtI); 3-year roll-out of a Common Instructional Framework; Credit by Demonstrated Mastery; and Dual Language programs. We are also taking steps to plan for the future of our district as our county grows and increases in diversity. I thank you for your support of Chatham County Schools and look forward to working with our community to work toward our 2014-2015 goal of “Growing Together, Cultivating Success”.
