Stratford Hall preserves the legacy of the Lee family and its plantation community; inspires an appreciation of America’s past, and encourages commitment to the ideals of leadership, honor,
independent thought and civic responsibility.
2 S t r a t f o r d H a l l
W hat a year this has been! As our
lives become more challenging
every day, many of us may discover that
Stratford Hall offers us the opportunity
to stop and to reflect upon what is most
important. As we walk these gorgeous
grounds on the banks of the Potomac
River, we are reminded that Stratford
Hall is much more than an historic home.
It is a place to learn, to enjoy nature and
to truly experience American history.
Here we may draw closer to friends
and family members as we recognize
the value of history and of studying the
challenges our founding fathers faced
and the principles they used to guide
their actions.
I believe, and I am sure all of
Stratford’s Directors agree, that the
Robert E. Lee Memorial Association has
an obligation to use Stratford Hall to
further the study of American history,
and in particular, the importance of
the Lee family to as many people as
possible. We have the place, we have the
people, we have the story to tell that is as
compelling and inspirational as any
story in America.
L e t t e r f r o m t h e P r e s i d e n t
Last year hundreds of school children
visited Stratford Hall and participated in
our Educational Adventures. As we see
the unfortunate decline in the amount of
history that is taught in schools, we seize
the opportunity to pique the interest of
young people and to offer them a glimpse
into the fascinating story of America’s
beginnings and the importance of the
roll played by the Lees of Stratford Hall.
Your support has enabled us to
provide first-class programs for these
children who will be the next generation
of history lovers, and the next leaders
of our country. Here, the children may
participate in weaving cloth, grinding corn
into meal, assisting the blacksmith as
they learn to experience everyday life of
the 18th century without the aid of their
iPods or iPhones.
To complement the programs for
school groups, Stratford offers daily
educational opportunities for all visitors.
Guided tours of the Great House,
exhibits in the Visitor Center, research
materials in the duPont Library, beautiful
gardens and hiking trails all have stories
to tell that offer each visitor a unique
A n n u a l R e p o r t Tw o Th o u s a n d & E i g h T 3
experience that can only be found at
Stratford Hall. Highlights of 2008
included the “Lee for Children” tours in
January to help celebrate General Lee’s
birthday month. On April 27, 2008, the
13th Triennial Coaching Day saw one of
the largest parades of horse-drawn
coaches and related events ever seen at
Stratford Hall. In May, an encampment
of Lee’s Lieutenants gave a chance for
visitors to meet and talk to “General
Lee” and his staff. June saw the
celebration of the Lees and Independence
with a program that portrayed the vital
roles played by Richard Henry, Francis
Lightfoot, Arthur and William Lee in
making America free and independent.
Stratford’s Great House and its
many outbuildings, collections, and
natural landscape provide the perfect
setting for these valuable programs and
special events, and their preservation will
always be a priority. Our dedicated and
professional staff continually monitor the
condition of every area of the property
and adhere to the highest preservation
and conservation standards when repairs
are needed.
Special attention is currently
focused on the Drawing Room and
the Upper Northwest stair passage
in the Great House. These areas will
be restored and redecorated to reflect
specific time periods in the Lee family
history at Stratford Hall. When the
entire restoration plan is complete,
visitors will enjoy a more compelling
tour that tells the story of each of the
Lees of Stratford Hall.
Whether you enjoy the special
events, the plantation tours, The
Grandparents Camps, the Educational
Adventures or just walking in the
footsteps of your ancestors, we thank you
for your support of Stratford Hall and
for ensuring that this remarkable place
will remain an enduring symbol of our
American heritage.

Dear Friends:
As I write this, the leaves are rapidly
falling off the trees and the first chill of
winter is in the air. This is yet another
reminder that our lives are marked by
constant and, as we have seen in the past
few months, often dramatic change.
In this time of change, it is even
more important for us to remain focused
on those places and things that connect
us to the past. Stratford Hall is one
of these special places that are loved
by many and provide this important
connection. It is this connection to
a place—a love of place—that is the
cornerstone of historic preservation.
Caring for this remarkable property, its
buildings, landscapes and collections,
is part of a love of place that spans
generations.
It is our mission to connect people
with the past and enable them to better
understand it and its significance for
their own lives. Historian Carl Becker
wrote that “history enables us to control
not society but ourselves—a much more
important thing: it prepares us to live
more humanely in the present and to
meet rather than foretell the future.”
This mission and the power of history
that fill this place with meaning, adds
profound purpose to our landscape,
historic buildings, and collections.
The lessons we teach here are
more profound because they are rooted
in the reality of acres of pasture and
woodlands, miles of Potomac River
waterfront, and stately historic buildings.
We do not offer answers to the
vexing challenges of the present. We do
offer the experiences of the many people
who have lived at this place in the past,
white and black, free and enslaved. Many
of their struggles remain our struggles.
Their words and actions enable us to
better understand the present and offer
hope for the future.
For the second year in a row,
we achieved a significant increase in
attendance thanks to a host of exciting
new educational programs and a renewed
commitment to telling the fascinating
and important story of four generations
of the Lee family. You will find the
details of all that we have accomplished
in the pages of this report.
Your encouragement, and most of
all, support, has made possible all our
ongoing efforts to preserve and share
Stratford Hall and provide educational
programs that tell the extraordinary story
of this special place. Thank you so much
for your support of Stratford Hall and its
greater purpose. We are deeply grateful.
Sincerely,
Paul C. Reber

Stratford Hall continued to join in the celebration of the 400th anniversary
of the Jamestown settlement. Thus, in July, Colonial Williamsburg interpreter Willie Balderson introduced visitors to Anas Todkill, one of the Englishmen serving with Captain John Smith during his Chesapeake region explorations. Of course the central focus remained the 200th birthday of Robert E. Lee. Richard McCaslin returned in August to speak on R. E. Lee and the Mexican War, a time crucial to Lee’s development as a great military leader. Then, in October, Mark Leepson brought the audience back to the Civil War as he examined General Lee’s connection to the 1864 Battle of Monocacy, an action seeing Confederate forces on the outskirts of Washington, D.C.
Attention to R. E. Lee continued when on January 19, 2008 Stratford Hall marked the 201st anniversary of his birth with a visit by the General as portrayed by Al Stone. General Lee returned on May 10–11 and was joined by many of his “Lieutenants” in an encampment in the open area south of the Great House. Along with R. E. Lee, events and programs also celebrated the achievements of his ancestors. Ever aware of the need to depict the Lees’
history accurately, staff structured the “Christmas at Stratford Hall” event to provide a true feel for eighteenth-century Great House celebrations.
During June’s “Lees and Independence” celebration, moreover, the spotlight was on the Revolutionary generation, including Light Horse Harry Lee and the famed “band of brothers,” especially the signers Richard Henry and Francis Lightfoot Lee. As always, the Lees figured prominently too in the lectures and discussion sessions of the summer’s 28th annual “Leadership and Life in Revolutionary America” seminar. Assisting with a variety of activities was Suzie Moine, Stratford Hall’s fourth intern sponsored by the French Heritage Society.
Increasing attention also was given to environmental education, with guidance from a new panel of natural sciences professionals who met here in September. Apropos of that theme, work continued on new wayside exhibits that will bring attention to various aspects of Stratford Hall’s wealth of natural resources, a project underwritten by the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network. In April, staff attended an environmental education workshop to learn about incorporating environmental topics into school programs to expand Stratford’s program offerings. Staff also helped to
form a new Three Rivers Environmental Educators organization, and the assistant director of education—who began work in January—assumed website responsibilities. In a related area, members of the Historic Gardens Advisory Panel gathered in November to undertake an exhaustive survey and inventory of plants in the East and West Gardens. The information was then put into digital spreadsheet and graphic overlay format.
Programs for school groups and historic interpretation for visitors in all categories remained a core component of the Education Department’s mission. Stratford Hall hosted 29 school programs during fall 2007 and spring 2008, and interpreters participated in one outreach program in spring 2008. The number of school programs increased between FY 2007 and FY 2008. In April, the Assistant Director of Education wrote and distributed an official interpreter handbook, which describes job expectations and provides a framework for interpretive activities.

Educational opportunities making use of Stratford’s rich historical and natural resources were offered through school programs, summer camps, lectures, events and residential seminars.
Multiple preservation projects were conducted during the year including renovations to the grist mill, ha-ha wall and Great House. Excavations by the archaeology field school continued near the Oval.

A large Preservation Project conducted during 2008 was at
Stratford Hall’s Mill. This project consisted of rebuilding the stone walls of the tailrace, the construction of new wood retaining walls, restoration work to the Mill Building and cleanup of the site. This work was made possible with a generous donation by Mrs. John C. Pritzlaff, the Honorary Director of Arizona. This work will allow the Stratford Hall Mill to continue to operate as a functional mill providing education to our visitors and sundry items to the gift shop.
The west steps of the Great House were repointed, per the specifications prepared by Historic Architect John Mott. The new Director of Preservation, Phil Mark, also addressed deferred maintenance items that required attention. The new Director of Preservation also completed the Annual Assessment of Historic Structures during this period, marking the first time this survey has been conducted by a Stratford Hall staff member. Two other large projects were also started during this time period. These projects are the restoration of the Southwest Outbuilding and the “Light Horse” Harry Lee-period stairs in the

northwest corner of the Great House. Both of these projects are a part of the Lee Heritage Interpretive Plan. Two summer interns, Rachel McDonald and Jeanne-Marie Mark, helped the department with multiple projects. These projects included working in the Southwest Outhouse, inventorying the Architectural Fragment Collection and painting the Great House windows.

Dr. Douglas Sanford, two experienced crew members, and a five-student
field school continued investigations of the earth-fast structure that existed in the mid-eighteenth century just south of the Oval. This season’s excavations indicated that the large building was probably used as a tobacco barn or storage building related to the domestic complex located across the current road. The absence of a chimney and the sparseness of domestic
artifacts dispelled the former theory that this structure might have been used for slave housing. A sign was placed at the Oval site to interpret the ongoing excavations to visitors.
Archival Internship for Summer2008Caitlin Starrett, an undergraduate at the University of Delaware, organized and rehoused Stratford’s collection of blueprints and maps in the duPont Library archives. Her archival internship, generously sponsored by Liz Vyvyan and Allison Fleming, also produced a much-needed digital catalog for the map/blueprint collection.
Jessie Ball duPont Memorial LibraryAs part of the master plan for library development, the library’s manuscript collection is being digitally cataloged. Approximately half of the documents have been catalogued to date, with the remainder possibly completed by the end of the year. The Director of Research & Library Collections has developed a template for digitally cataloging the rare book collection and has started the project. We anticipate the hiring of a rare book cataloger when funding becomes available.

A comprehensive inventory and condition assessment process began
in 2007 to help document the condition, ownership, and location of the varied collections of Stratford. Battery-operated environmental monitors were placed in the exhibit and storage areas to help monitor the condition of the collections. Stratford applied for and was awarded a set of reference materials through the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ Connecting to Collections program—a wonderful resource focused on collections care and preventative conservation.
ExhibitsIn January, staff installed a temporary exhibit, “Inheriting Memories: Special Objects in the Lee Family Collections,” which featured a collection of objects on loan from members of the Lee-Custis family. The Southwest dependency was closed to the public and furnishings from that building and the Northwest Stair Passage were removed to other locations to allow for restoration and reinterpretation in conjunction with the Lee Heritage Plan. Research is currently underway into the historic use and furnishings of these spaces.

Internships for Summer 2008Thanks to the generous support of Matt and Ellen Simmons, two internships in collections were awarded. Carrie Hertz, a PhD candidate in Folklore from the University of Indiana, served as the Textile Collections Intern and worked on researching Stratford’s extensive costume and furnishing textile collection. Carlee Reed, a rising junior at Brigham Young University, served as the Collections Management Intern and worked on a variety of tasks including conducting inventories and planning an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.
