. Executive summary
This report gives highlights of events that took place at the University of Nairobi Department
of Ophthalmology in respect to training of ophthalmologists through support from Light for
The World (LFTW). The institution trains ophthalmologists not only for Kenya but also for
other countries in East and Central Africa
By every measure this year proved to be an unprecedented period of activities, growth and
accomplishments. The department was able to achieve most of its objectives and activities
for the year 2013.
In the reporting period, a number of activities were planned and achievements included; …
surgeries conducted in a total of 18 outreach camps conducted in 4 marginalized areas of
Kitui, Litein, Mwingi and Garissa; 1 vehicle was procured to facilitate movement to outreach
activities by students; 8 postgraduate students were graduated; 18 post graduate students
were given exposure through elective term rotations; 16 postgraduate students were
facilitated to sit International College of Ophthalmology examinations, the department
increased its human resource by recruiting 1 new academic staff and others were promoted
to senior lecturers and Professor, and the department also fostered partnerships and
linkages with other institutions. Several members and students attended various
conferences and workshops both national and international.12 postgraduate benefited from
scholarships for their studies. There was effective management of the budgets and timely
delivery of outputs relating to the program.
We are very grateful for making this work possible. Your support enables us to continue to
train Ophthalmologists eradicate preventable and treatable blindness.

2. Factors that have affected/may affect the project
The procurement of a project vehicle to facilitate outreach activities will enhance reach to
marginalised areas for the outreach teams. This is further expected to help boost the
surgical numbers attained during the outreach activities

Conduct 1,000 cataract and other surgeries
In spite of the challenges the programme faced, a total of 18 free surgical eye camps were
undertaken between February and November under the joint sponsorship of our partners. During
each visit a team of consultants and doctors totaling to 8 were involved in the outreach activities
providing surgical, diagnostic and eye care counseling to the patients. A total of 3509 patients
(Adults and Children) were screened in rural areas of Litein, Mwingi, Garissa and Kitui. They
were able to restore sight to 1387 patients through eye surgeries conducted in the period under
review. The outreach team was able to treat and operate a total of 456 Paediatric patients who
come with various medical and surgical eye problems including significant numbers of eye
injuries/Traumas, Conjunctivitis, refractive errors, retinoblastoma among other eye diseases.
Surgeries conducted included, Cataract, Trauma repair, Conjunctivitis, Glaucoma, Retinoblastoma, corneal ulcer among others.
The department of ophthalmology received a VISALISTM100 phaco machine for cataract surgery.
This is a donation from Lions Club, Bavaria, through the facilitation of Prof. Dr. Volker Klauss.

Support CME for staff and post graduate students (OSEA etc.)
Academic staff and students participated in more than 15 various local/international conferences,
workshops and training programmes where they also presented papers. 15 post graduate
students and 11 staff were supported to attend CMEs during the period under review.

Participated in AGENT summer school expert seminar held in the department from October 28th –
31st 2013. All the staff and students in the department as well as alumni attended the seminar.

Graduate 10 postgraduate students as ophthalmologists
The department has continued to build capacity within Kenya and other African countries and
reducing the human resource gap. A total of 8 postgraduate students graduated during this period
and were posted to various hospitals within Kenya and their home countries. This achievement
was against a target of 10. 2 students who did not qualify during this period as per the targets are
expected to graduate in the coming implementation period. We had 2 postgraduate students
sponsored by LFTW graduate during this period- Dr. Morris Musyoki and Dr. Alexandria Mashep.

Enrol 12 postgraduate students from Kenya and other African countries
The development of human resource has been a priority for the department of Ophthalmology
and during this period, a total of 12 students were enrolled ; ( 6 from various parts of the country
and 6 foreigners drawn from South Sudan, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Mozambique and Burundi).
Undertake 18 outreach camps in 4 marginalized areas of Kitui, Litein, Mwingi and Garissa
18 outreach activities were conducted in the period under review during which a total of …
surgeries were conducted. Surgery, Diagnostic, Screening and treatment were conducted during
the outreach camps held in Litein, Mwingi, Kitui and Garissa. The outreach team was able to
attend to both adult and paediatric patients with various ailments including Cataracts, Glaucoma,
Corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, refractive errors, squints, trauma among others. Bilateral and
Unilateral blindness was also noted.
Enhance international exposure and cooperation by attaching 10 postgraduate students for elective term rotations
The department closely cooperated with training partners during elective term rotations and
enhanced international exposure and cooperation whereby students on elective term were
attached in various hospital institutions in Kenya, Peru, South Sudan, Botswana and Zambia for
clinical exposure. 18 postgraduate students attended and successfully completed their elective
term rotations in the reporting period.

The department implemented the following to contribute to the flagship of VISION 2020:
Engaged in policy dialogue with national ministries and regional authorities to promote inclusive
education, and curriculum development.
To enhance visibility and advocacy the academic staff published in peer reviewed journals.
The department carried out several consultancies with various organizations/institutes
The department has participated in national/regional global prevention of blindness activities by
maintaining links with the International Council of Ophthalmologists (ICO),German
Ophthalmological Society (DOG), and participated in joint planning and project implementation

with stakeholders E.g. COECSA, MOH among others
Participated in AGENT summer school workshop held in the department
Facilitate 10 postgraduate students to sit international college of ophthalmology examinations
16 postgraduate students were facilitated to sit the ICO examinations in April 2013 at the
department.
The students also received 2012/2013 set of American Academy of Ophthalmology books. The
set has 13 volumes covering all fields in ophthalmology, this was made possible through
COECSA
Enhance relevant research activities for academic staff and postgraduate students
During this period we had 8 postgraduate students present their thesis papers on various topics
which were accepted by the University out of which five of the papers were presented during the

annual COECSA conference held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The academic staff have been involved in Research and during this period the 6 staff published
articles in the Journal of Ophthalmology of Eastern Central and Southern Africa in August 2013
We had visiting lecturers from various countries coming to the department to give lectures on
various eye conditions and ongoing researches.
Visitors from Spain, president of Vision Mundi, paediatric ophthalmologist, teaching on diplopia after cataract
surgery study.

Visiting lecturer from Canada, expert in ophthalmic-pathology teaching retinoblastoma genetics and new local success management in the department to the students
Commemorate the World Sight Day through outreach activities
The commemoration was done in October 2013 and a total of over 400 patients were screened
through outreach camps conducted by the department.
Foster partnerships and linkages with other organizations
The department has maintained links with the International Council of Ophthalmologists
(ICO),German Ophthalmological Society (DOG), and participated in joint planning and project
implementation with stakeholders E.g. COECSA, MOH among others.
Through our partnership, we had 2 postgraduate students from Muhimbili University of Health
and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) , Tanzania attend their elective term rotation in May 2013
The department was also happy to celebrate with LFTW their 25th Anniversary.
4. Strategic progress (from Sightsavers’ perspective)
Strengthening existing systems and organisations
All lecturers and support staff at the department are government employees and sustainability of training programmes is therefore guaranteed. Continued support to their capacity building through various activities including CMEs then contribute to the strengthening of the department of ophthalmology
5. Reflections and key learning points
What Worked Well
The department has continued its staff training development in new areas of subspecialisation
Project implementation of this project has proved so far to be effective and efficient from program, budget and administrative points of view. Utilizing existing partnerships and cooperation with government, partners and civil society and networks has allowed for an integrated approach to addressing project objectives.
The department in Partnership with LFTW has embarked on implementation of the HR development activities through postgraduate scholarships. The roll out will go a long way in responding to the institution capacity complementing the on-going initiative with partners.
The department has taken lead in undertaking eye care research in and out of the country. Joint research initiatives have been undertaken with other eye care collaborators and have provided the much needed information that has been used to plan eye care programmes in the country.
6. Planned activities for next year 2014
