When you look at conditions in black Washington today... we’ve got a thousand years to go,
we’re not there, and I know some people get disheartened, and I know some people want to throw in the sponge
and give up, but I can’t do that. My feeling is too strong that it is God’s will that we live together in harmony and peace.
It’s God’s will that we grow beyond our racial animosities and that we must
commit ourselves to continue that work. That’s why I am here.
I am not here for any other reason.

THE MOST REV. MICHAEL BRUCE CURRY
is Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church. He is the
Chief Pastor and serves as President and Chief Executive Officer, and as
Chair of the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church. Bishop Curry was installed as the
27th Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church on November 1, 2015. He was
elected to a 9-year term and confirmed at the 78th General Convention of The Episcopal
Church in Salt Lake City, UT on June 27, 2015.
The descendant of enslaved Africans brought to North America by way of the trans-At-
lantic slave routes, Presiding Bishop Curry was born in Chicago, IL, on March 13, 1953. His
father was an Episcopal priest and his mother a devout Episcopalian. She died at a young
age, and Presiding Bishop Curry, along with his sister, was raised by his father and his
grandmother.
He attended public schools in Buffalo, NY, and at a young age learned about social activ-
ism through his father’s leadership. Throughout his ministry, he has spoken out on issues of
social justice, including reconciliation, immigration policy and marriage equality.
Presiding Bishop Curry graduated with high honors from Hobart College in Geneva, NY in
1975. He received a Master of Divinity degree in 1978 from Yale University Divinity School
in New Haven, CT. He continued his education at The College of Preachers, Princeton
Theological Seminary, Wake Forest University, the Ecumenical Institute at St. Mary’s
Seminary, and the Institute of Christian Jewish Studies. He received honorary degrees
from Episcopal Divinity School, Virginia Theological Seminary, Yale, and Sewanee: The
University of the South.
In his parish ministries in North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland, Presiding Bishop Curry had
extensive involvement in preaching missions; Crisis Control Ministry; ecumenical children’s
day camps; the Absalom Jones initiative; creating networks of day care providers and edu-
cational centers; and the investment of millions of dollars into inner-city neighborhoods.
He has authored five books: Love is the Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times
(2020), The Power of Love The Power of Love (2018); Following the Way of Jesus: Church’s
Teachings in a Changing World (2017); Songs My Grandma Sang (2015); and Crazy
Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus (2013). He was one of the subjects of In Conversation:
Michael Curry and Barbara Harris, edited by Fredrica Harris Thompsett (2017).

YO-YO MA’s multi-faceted career is testament to his enduring belief in culture’s
power to generate trust and understanding. Whether performing new or familiar works
from the cello repertoire, collaborating with communities and institutions to explore
culture’s role in society, or engaging unexpected musical forms, Yo-Yo strives to foster
connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity.
With partners from around the world and across disciplines, he creates programs that
stretch the boundaries of genre and tradition to explore music-making as a means not
only to share and express meaning, but also as a model for the cultural collaboration he
considers essential to a strong society. It was this belief that inspired Yo-Yo to establish
Silkroad, a collective of artists from around the world who create music that engages
their many traditions.
In August 2018, Yo-Yo began a new journey, setting out to perform Johann Sebastian
Bach’s six suites for solo cello in one sitting in 36 locations around the world, iconic
venues that encompass our cultural heritage, our current creativity, and the challenges
of peace and understanding that will shape our future. Each concert is an example of
culture’s power to create moments of shared understanding, as well as an invitation to a
larger conversation about culture, society, and the themes that connect us all.
Yo-Yo Ma was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in
Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at
age four and three years later moved with his
family to New York City, where he continued
his cello studies with Leonard Rose at the
Juilliard School. After his conservatory
training, he sought out a liberal arts
education, graduating from Harvard in
1976. He has performed for nine American
presidents, most recently on the occasion
of President Biden’s inauguration. He
plays three instruments, a 2003 instrument
made by Moes & Moes, a 1733 Montagnana
cello from Venice, and the 1712 Davidoff
Stradivarius.

DR. YSAŸE BARNWELL adheres to four
axioms that have proven to be significant in her life:
1. To whom much is given, much is required.
2. As one door closes, another door opens.
3. Everything matters.
4. Say yes!
As the only child of a registered nurse mother and classical vio-
linist father, Dr. Barnwell studied violin for 15 years beginning at age 2
1/2, and focused on music through high school. She went on to earn Bachelor and
Master of Science degrees in Speech Pathology (SUNY Geneseo, 1967–1968), Doctor
of Philosophy in Speech Pathology (University of Pittsburgh, 1975), and a Master of
Science in Public Health (Howard University, 1981).
xDr. Barnwell was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by her alma mater,
SUNY Geneseo (1998); Meadville Lombard Theological Seminary in Chicago (2009);
and the Virginia Theological Seminary (2011). In 2012, all members of Sweet Honey in
the Rock™ were awarded the Honorary Doctor of Letters from Chicago Theological
Seminary.
For over a decade, Dr. Barnwell was a professor at the College of Dentistry at Howard
University, after which she conducted community-based projects in computer tech-
nology and the arts, and administered health programs at Children’s Hospital National
Medical Center and at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC.
Dr. Barnwell joined Sweet Honey in the Rock in 1979. Her training as a Sign Language
Interpreter led to the group’s tradition of including a Sign Language Interpreter in
the ensemble. Dr. Barnwell appears as a vocalist and/or instrumentalist on more than
30 recordings with Sweet Honey in the Rock. After 34 years, she retired from the
group, and for the past three decades she has worked as a master teacher and choral
clinician in African American cultural performance. Her workshop, “Building a Vocal
Community®: Singing in the African American Tradition,” has been conducted on three
continents, and has served as a model of pedogogy for educators, cultural activitsts,
singers, and historians.
A native of New York, Dr. Barnwell now lives in Washington, DC.
