Automatic Seal Face Alignment Vulcan Self-Aligning Floating Stationary compemsates for shaft/seal mis-alignment, seals where rigid designs would fail and commonly increases seal life, by providing a steady true face contract, with full, fluid-film lubrication and no point contact wear.
Centrifugal Forces Act to throw media and particles away from, rather than into, the seal faces. Efficient heat transfer away from the seal faces is engineered by our design and materials. Smooth contoured Geometry Minimises erosion and avoids turbulence. Non-Clogging Design Multiple springs for even face loading, isolated from the product, prevents clogging by dirty fluids. HASTELLOY C springs are fitted as standard for maximum corrosion resistance and life. Eliminates Shaft/Sleeve Fretting Larger diameter static ‘O’ Ring seal will not fret nor damage the shaft sleeve and can seal on shaft sleeve previously slightly worn by other seals or gland packing. Hydarulically Balanced Faces Effectively reduces the seal closing forces, giving true running faces with lower friction, heat and wear build up and thus increases the pressure range and the life of the seal. Cartridge Design Pre-assembled, set and tested for easy, accurate and assured installation. Universal Slotted Gland Design Fits all common bolt sizes and pitch circle diameters. Compact seal design allows fitting to most pumps without modification. Tangential Flush cavity Uses the circumferential motion of the seal to maximize flush circulation, works for both clock-wise and anti-clockwise seal rotation and avoids the pressure imbalance and vibration frequently induced by flush
Easy Shaft Attachment and Torque Transmission Given by even distribution of optimum number set screws. Tangential Quench and Drain Cavity For optimum circulation of barrier, cooling or heating media, or to provide vent (fumes/vapour) and drain (liquid) facilities for controlled leakage. ‘O’ Ring Sealed Clamp Ring Seals any leakage tangentially away from the bearings/motor. Vital Carbon Restriction Bushing Acts as an automatic centering device, thus eliminating the problem of the seal not being centered and the meddlesome positioning clips. The bushing also greatly restricts loss of any quench media used and of any product upon ultimate failure of the seal. High PV Value Faces The Pressure Velocity (PV) factor of the seal faces largely determines their suitability for, and specifically the amount of heat generated by, the face in any application. Silicon carbide has the best combination of heat dissipation, running, hardness and chemical resistance capabilities of any seal face material. Vulcan fit Triple Phenolic Resin impregnated Carbon Vs silicon Carbide faces as standard to give the highest possible face PV combination. This maximises the capability, performance and life the of seal.

TYPE 52/56 CARTRIDGE SEAL DESIGN FEATURES
FEATURE
Cartridge design: Seal is assembled, loaded, set and tested at our factory
Internally balanced
Multiple springs in Hastelloy C sealed out of the fluid
TRUE AUTOMATIC SELF – ALIGNING FACES (PATENT APPLIED FOR)
VULCAN CARTRIDGE SEAL TYPE 52/54/56
BENEFITS
1. The seal can be swiftly and easily fitted by merely clamping it to the shaft and bolting up to the gland face. No measuring of installation dimensions, marking out of the shaft from the gland is required. The seal normally require no pump modification and fits 5/16” (8mm) cross section glands.
2. Time and cost of installation is saved and even
more significantly, the principal cause of seal failure i.e. fitting error is avoided.
The effective pressure to be sealed at the faces is reduced. This lowers friction, heat build up and wear at the seal faces giving an increase in the pressure that can be sealed and often, significantly increasing the life of the seals. The faces run true with low turbulence generated. In addition, shaft fretting is eliminated by balanced seal designs. 1. The extreme corrosion resistance of
HASTELLOY C is further enhanced in our design by the springs being sealed out of the fluid. This protects the springs from corrosion and clogging problems. Vulcan fit HASTELLOY C as standard, where lower grade stainless springs are standard to many of our companies.
2. Multiple springs distribute pressure more evenly
to the seal faces than a single spring design, can accommodate short working length designs and higher shaft speeds and avoid any risk of catastrophic spring failure.
Allows the seal to handle shaft mis-alignment a common feature especially as equipment or bearings become worn. Standard seals with fixed faces will either fail to seal life. Experience shows that self-aligning seals normally significantly out-last fixed face designs.
VULCAN CARTRIDGE SEAL TYPE 52/54/56
FEATURE
Carbon restriction bushing fitted as standard External clamping Slotted gland Carbon vs silicon carbide faces as standard Air connections Static external oil seal in type 54 design Proven design Fair repair policy based on cost of repairs necessary
BENEFITS
Upon ultimate failure of the seal, the carbon acts as a disaster bushing, substantially reducing product leakage to a spray. This minimises product loss and bearing contamination and can (in the right circumstances) allow the seal to be continued to run short-term until the pump can be taken off-line. For original easy fitting and readily allows any necessary shaft/impellor adjustments. Designed to fit all common bolt sizes and popular bolt circle diameters. The PV value of the seal faces largely determines the suitability/capability of a seal for an application and the subsequent life of the seal (barring disastrous outside influences). Carbon vs Silicon Carbide has the highest PV value (at 1750 Bar m/s) of my standard face combination. Most seal companies offer Carbon vs Ceramic (because of cost) with only a 170 (ten times less) PV value and charge more for Carbon vs Silicon Carbide. Why compromise seal capabilities and life? Vulcan offer Carbon vs Silicon Carbide as standard with no increase in cost. Vulcan design fits the Silicon Carbide rings into Stainless Steel housings to avoid common shock damage found in other designs. Type 56 variant has Quench, Flush and Drain connections pre-drilled in the gland. Vulcan Type 54 uses a Forsheda V Seal with substantial benefits over more common rotary oil seal design. Cartridge seal assemblies have been extensively provided to improve seal reliability, performance and life especially when incorporating self-aligning faces. Our repair programme returns the seal to an as-new condition at a fraction of the new cost. In contrast to our competitors, we charge for the work done, not at some arbitrary (and high) percentage of the new
Non-Clogging DesignMultiple springs, isolated from the product, prevents clogging by dirty fluids and giveseven face loading. HASTELLOY C springsare fitted as standard for maximum corrosionresistance and life.
