It has never crossed my mind to join the Amazon Affiliate Program (aka Amazon Associate Program) to make money promoting products from the Amazon Marketplace as an Amazon

Affiliate.

First of all, the old understanding I had of Amazon was all about BOOKS and the commission rate was only 4%. How much can I make from that 4% commission from selling books? Unless I can sell millions of books, else how to make a living?

Until late last year, then I discovered Amazon is selling more than books. They now include products in many categories, like ”Computer & Office”, “Electronics”, “Home, Garden & Pets” and many more. And importantly, they sell high tickets items like Cement Mixer which costs above $4,000, Jewelry pieces that can cost up to $800,000.

Imagine making 4% of $800,000 is $32,000. Now, this is not small feast.

Amazon Affiliates Can Indeed Make Money From Selling

So, I decided to learn more about Amazon Affiliate Program and to study how to make money as an Amazon Affiliate.

After doing all my research and study, here are my findings.

Why Is It Possible To Make A Living As An Amazon Affiliate?

a. Amazon is one of the biggest Online Shopping Mall. They sell more than 30 Billions dollars worth of products each year.

b. People know about Amazon and trust buying things from Amazon knowing that they can get a refund if the goods found to be faulty.

c. There are 10′s of thousands of products on Amazon, you can never exhaust your list of products to promote.

d. Amazon is such a good promoter / marketer. And many people come to the Amazon Marketplace end up buying more than what they originally intended to. Some of these additional purchases are not even related to what you promote, but Amazon still pays you the commission.

e. Except for Electronics products, the commission rate can actually go up to as high as 15% depending on your sale volume.

f. Low competition in terms of Search Engines ranking. It is quite easy to rank in first page of Google Search Result Page using the product name/model or product type.

Hey, I am convinced. I had bought products from Amazon before. So, I decided to promote a Seiko Running Metronome I bought from Amazon years ago I used for improving my running performance.

My Very First Amazon Affiliate Review Site

In mid January, I spent about 1 week to gather all the info and reviews about this Seiko DM50 Metronome and wrote an article about this product. Subsequently I created the review site. www.RunningMetronome.com

A week later, my site was indexed by Google and another 2 weeks later, some of my major keywords had climbed up to the Top 10 position in the first page of Google Search Result page. Some even occupied more than 1 position. I was really amazed.

I was really shock to find that my site could rank in Google Top10 within such a short time (2 weeks) with only implementing the basic On-page SEO with a handful of profile backlinks (Off-page SEO).

Sales started coming in and for the next 3 weeks, I made $27.40

Hey, I am very happy indeed though the amount is not that significant, but this is only one site and the metronome is selling at less than $25 each. Also, the demand/search for this running metronome is rather low. Anyway, this was used only to test out whether I could really make an earning as an Amazon Affiliate.

Well, what if I select higher priced products and set up 10′s and 20′s of this type of Amazon

Affiliate Product Review site, I could make much more. This is definitely scalable.

Okay, let’s do a simple calculation.

Let say I promote products which is priced at $200 and higher and sell at least 7 units a month (which is not difficult), I would receive a commission of 6% (instead of 4%) for each item I sold. And 6% of $200 is $12.

Let’s be conservative, I only manage to sell 20 units a month. From my RunnerMetronome site, I sold 19 units the very first month, so selling 20 units a month is very achievable. And with that assumption, that means I could make $240 a month.

Let say I manage to create 30 of such Amazon Affiliate Product Review sites within a year, $240 x 30 = $7,200. Hey I could make $7,200 a month a year later. Ha, that’s is easy and good money though it requires consistent effort over a period of one year.

I do not think there is any JOB out there that gives a $7,200 yearly increment. RIGHT?

So. this is definitely not quick money but doable and very promising.

Amazon Affiliate Money Making Product Selection Criteria

Certainly there are some rules that Amazon Affiliates should follow in order to more make money. Below are the rules I intend to use for my next Amazon product promotion - which is rather stringent:-

a. Product with a price tag of at least $150

b. This product must have received at least 50 reviews from the consumers on Amazon

c. This product must have a 4 to 5 star rating

After the product selection, you need to do the basic keyword research using the free Google Keyword Tool. Simply copy the name/model of the product and paste into the Google Keyword Tool. From the list of keywords select the appropriate keywords and check for the competition using the Google Search Box.

You will be amazed to find that most of the keywords have low competition. When I say competition, I mean the pages listed in the SERP have low Page Rank (many have PR “N/A” or”0″) and the number of backlinks are less than 5.

Next set up a WordPress blog just like what I did and do up all the Basic On-page SEO using the WP Plug in “All-in-One SEO”. Followed by some simply backlink building.

That’s it.
