First Generation Sheep Farmer Cody Wood was raised in Alvadore (Grandson to Milton and Mary Decker). Like many of the kids in Alvadore he spent his early years working at the Nursery. At 23 while working at the livestock auction on Hwy 99 he picked up his first “bummer lamb”. Bummers are most often orphans and were free back then. Today he raises about 3000 sheep in a revolving wheel throughout a year on anywhere from 300 to 1500 acres from Meadowview Road to Corvallis. Sheep and the valley grass both like temperatures of 60 degrees so they make a good match. However, the preference is to graze sheep on fields of chicory, clover and plantain which do better in the warmer weather. Once a lamb grows to 120-140lbs he harvests them for specialty restaurants as well as Whole Foods Market. The guardian dogs he uses with the seep are large white and fluffy similar to the sheep he also uses border collies for herding He smiles when he thinks of the dogs stories he could tell; the canine can be cantankerous and have their own agenda. To gain experience as a first generation farmer Cody has gone outside the box. Choosing to work in New Zealand sheep ranch then continuing his education at a culinary school in New york. Trial and error have been Cody’s friend. Google “Cody Wood Lamb Farmer” and find episode 64 for the Meat Block for more details on the path Cody has taken.

Eugene RC Aeronauts in Alvadore Many residents in Alvadore have probably driven by us, and some have likely stopped in to check out the radio-controlled airplanes we fly. We are a club of aviation enthusiasts of all ages. We build, fly, crash, and repair aerobatic aircraft, warbirds, helicopters, drones, and just about anything you can think of. We love our location at 92560 Alvadore Rd.! The Alvadore community has been nothing but welcoming to us and our hobby, and we aim to keep up our good relationship with our neighbors and community. We welcome the Alvadore community to stop by and say hi anytime we are there. Feel free to come ask questions,
spectate, or just talk airplanes with us. We had our annual giant scale aerobatic event called Monster Fest in August. Look for more events coming in 2019. For more information about our club, please visit our website at www.eugenerc.org and look us up on Facebook as well! Patrick
Where have the Buffalo gone! First of all, Buffalo are common to Europe, so the real question is”
Where have the Bison gone?” The short answer is Nyssa, Oregon. At
one time the herd on Fir Butte numbered 100. Carol and Don
Schroeder owners of the Bison for 42 years retired to town. Most of
those 42 years were here in our Alvadore Neighborhood. Don is a
healthy, happy and semi-retired orthopedic surgeon. Rather than
spending his spare time over the last 42 years at the country club,
Don spent time fixing fences and chasing Bison. He is enjoying his
senior years thanks to the exercise, country air and great Alvadore
water. He would prescribe raising bison in Alvadore as a medicine to
keep you young. Over the years Don has been gored in the leg and
keister several times nothing serious thankfully. Over 30 years ago the
bison escaped his fences onto Fir Butte and the dog catchers arrived
to collect them. I image it was a funny site. Once the bison were
corralled the DA decided to charge Don with "Bison at large". After
plea bargaining the sentence was reduced to "leaving the gate
open". This resulted in a small fine and probation with
stipulation he not leaves the state for a
year without checking in with the
courts. You just never know when your
Bison will gain you fugitive status. The
moral for all you ranchers… "keep your
gates closed". I am certain this is only
one of the funny/crazy stores raising
buffalo brought to their lives. I miss the
Bison on Fir Butte, a couple of them
can be seen over on Meadowview
Road. By Cheryl Chambers

Can you believe the 43rd annual Alvadore Halloween carnival is less than 60 days away? Have you
started working on your costume for the costume contest? Have you ever been to, or heard of our great
event? The continued goal of this event is to build a strong community. Our family friendly, safe old
fashioned carnival is for everyone in the Alvadore community and surrounding areas. We hope you will
choose to stay in Alvadore for Halloween, bring your friends from town and enjoy a taste of country fun.

hand out at your door to the carnival). Carnival games are one ticket each time you play you earn ghost
bucks to spend on great prizes. There is a cake walk, raffles, costume contests, popcorn, cotton candy,
bounce house and a low cost dinner. It’s an opportunity to visit with old friends and make new ones. Truly
there is something for everyone no matter your age.
Help is needed for this year’s event before during and after, any small help is appreciated. We want to
have lots of volunteers so everyone just takes a short shift or small job. Many hands make quick work.
Which of these can you help with? You will have fun and it will mean so much to so many.
Making phone calls, running errands, passing out flyers
Baking goods for cake walk, donating candy, donating prizes for raffle items
Setting up the raffle baskets, helping in the kitchen
Setting up the Carnival, taking down and cleaning up after
Running a game booth, this is great for middle and high school students (guaranteed
volunteer hours)
Next planning Meeting is October 3rd 7pm at the Alvadore Fire Station – please RSVP if you
can make it. We don’t want to miss you.
The carnival is an integral part of the Alvadore community and we are excited to see what we can do with
your help. This carnival started in 1974 and we think the families that envisioned this event would be proud
as it continues to grow. Again, this event has something for everyone, young and old. So please contact me for more information. Kim King, board president

A little bit about me and my connection to Alvadore. My wife and I built a home on Goodman
Rd about 3 years ago, we truly love the rural just out of town lifestyle and raising our children
here. We have been spending our free time turning our little hayfield into a home and enjoying
every minute of it. I am a loan officer with Umpqua Bank and have been in the industry for
nearly 20 years. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about USDA
loan or any other home lending questions.
Lyme Disease -My name is Colleen Witzel, I have lived in the Alvadore
area since 1999. As a teenager I contracted Lyme disease and other tick
borne infections in the Eugene Area. I suffered with various symptoms for
40 years before finally being accurately diagnosed, by that point my
condition was chronic. My diagnosis was the beginning of a long journey
to try to reach recovery which continues to this day. Lyme Disease is
now being reported in all 50 states and it is estimated that one in 3 people
will be affected. Unfortunately most local Drs are not up to date on treatments and long term
symptoms may develop. This time of year many folks are hunting, horseback riding, hiking etc.
Prevention is key; spraying clothing with Permethrin prior to use will help repel ticks and other
insects. For protection of exposed areas Picaridin repellent is recommended. Be watchful for
bites. If you are bit please save the tick and consult tickreport.com for testing. Treatment should
begin immediately without testing and ideally should last for 6 weeks minimum. Symptoms
include: Flu-like illness, Fever, History of Tick Bite (Not all patients recall a bite), Headache,
Extreme Fatigue, EM Rash, Other Rashes (found in 50% of patients), Malar Flush, Red Ear Lobes,
TMJ/TMJD Jaw Pain, Neck & Back Pain, Joint Pain & Swelling, Bone Pain and Bell's Palsy. In some
cases neurological symptoms are present.
Also contact me at [email protected] for information regarding treatment. If you have
been diagnosed or think you may possibly have Lyme please join Willamette Valley Lyme Group
and Oregon Lyme Disease on Facebook.

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE HOOD - It makes me happy to see neighbors making even the
smallest improvement to their property. Most of us love this area we call home, upgrading a fence or
adding some flower just shows the pride we have in our homes and area. Many homes in Alvadore
have been made new over the years here is just one story of a recent remodel project.
Welcome to Alvadore, Jim and Stacy Banks, they purchased 89560 Fir Butte Rd and have undertaken a
big remodel, thanks for sharing a little of your story.
We looked for several years for small acreage close to town. We even sold our home and moved into
a camp trailer to be ready when the perfect home came on the market. Growing up in Santa Clara I
always like this area, so we were leaning towards something around the area. After a few failed
attempts to purchase other properties, the Fir Butte home came on the market. It was way more than
we were looking for, we decided were ready to take on this huge project! We did most of the work
ourselves, with tons of help from family and friends (and our friendly blackberry eating goats). Luckily
Jim is a plumber which was very handy since only one plumbing fixture in the whole place was
working. We weren't looking for a Pool, which was more of a pond (including 2 giant bullfrogs that
were caught and relocated, this was a bit tricky for sure), but it cleaned up nice. It wasn't long after
we started this project that we began hearing stories from the neighbors about how nice this place
once was, and we were up for the challenge. We figured it would be a five year process, so we still
have a couple years left to get it how we want it. So far we love this place, the neighbors are
wonderful, and we can't wait to spend many more years here making it ours bit by bit. We hope you
enjoy the pictures. Jim and Stacy Banks
