Since2010,we’vecommittedtoinvestnearly$2.5billioninlarge-scalerenewableenergyprojectsandresidentialsolarrooftopfundswithacombinedcapacityof3.7GW.Thesetargetedinvestmentsgobeyondourownoperationalfootprint,enablingrenewableenergydeploymentatalargerscalewhilegeneratingattractiverisk-adjustedreturns.Certainrenewableenergyinvestmentsincludedinournon-marketableequityinvestmentsaccountedforundertheequitymethodareVIEs.Theseentities'activitiesinvolvepowergenerationusingrenewablesources.Wehavedeterminedthatthegovernancestructuresoftheseentitiesdonotallowustodirecttheactivitiesthatwouldsignificantlyimpacttheireconomicperformancesuchassettingoperatingbudgets.Thepotentialtimehorizonforthisimpactispredictedtobemedium-term.

Theavailabilityofourproductsandservicesdependsonthecontinuingoperationofourinformationtechnologyandcommunicationssystems.Oursystemsarevulnerabletodamageorinterruptionfromtheeffectsofclimatechange(suchassealevelrise,drought,flooding,wildfires,andincreasedstormseverity).OurheadquartersarelocatedinMountainView,California.Wealsoownandleaseofficeandbuildingspaceinthesurroundingareasnearourheadquarters,whichintheaggregate(includingourheadquarters)representapproximately11.1millionsquarefeetofoffice/buildingspaceandapproximatelyforty-fiveacresofdevelopablelandtoaccommodateanticipatedfuturegrowth.WeconductedanassessmentofGoogle'sexposuretoclimateriskinthenear-term(2020-2025),mid-term(2050),andlong-term(2100).Thisincludedaglobalassessmentoftheimpactoffloodingonourrealestateoperations.BasedonRCP4.5and8.5,theSanFranciscoBayAreaisprojectedtoexperiencesealevelrisebetween18.5-26.0inchesbytheendofthecentury.EventhoughthelocationofGoogle’sBayAreaheadquartersisnotprojectedtoexperiencethehighestlevelofsealevelrisewhencomparedtotheotherGooglesitesassessedaspartofthisstudy,thelocationofthebuildingsinMountainView,Sunnyvale,andPaloAltoandtheimportanceofthesesitesasGoogle’sglobalheadquartersplacesthosefacilitiesataparticularlyhighriskwhenmappedagainstanticipatedsealevelrise.ManyofGoogle’sbuildingsintheselocationsarelocatedinthecurrent100-yearfloodplainand,therefore,areatrisktoimpactsfromcoastalfloodinginthepresentday.Thoseriskswillonlybefurtherexacerbatedbysealevelrisethroughoutthecentury.Thepotentialtimehorizonforthisimpactispredictedtobemedium-term.

Ourinternalreportingprocessenablesustotrackprogresstowardourgoalsandinfluencefuturestrategies.BoththeTechnicalInfrastructureandRealEstateteamsdevelopstrategiestoreachourgoals.ThesearethentranslatedintoprogramsandprojectswhoseresultsarereportedtotheSVPofTechnicalInfrastructureandtheVPofRealEstatequarterly.Thisprocessisembeddedacrossthecompanyandthefeedbackmechanismofquarterlyreportinghelpstofurtherinfluencefuturestrategies.Forexample,ourRealEstateteamrunsaninternalSustainableOperationsProgram,whichrequireseachparticipatingofficetocomplywithasetofannualandongoingsustainabilitybestpractices,inadditiontocompletingatleastonedatadrivenprojecteachyeartoreducetheirlocalimpactontheenvironment.Aswebecomemoreefficient,customersusingourproductsandservicesinevitablydotoo,whichalsodecreasestheircarbonfootprint.Forexample,bymovingits17,000employeestoGoogleAppsandGmail,theUSGeneralServicesAdministrationreducedserverenergyconsumptionbynearly90%.ii.Physicalandregulatoryriskshaveinfluencedourstrategy.Specifically,thepotentialincreaseinelectricitypricesduetothephysicalimpactsofclimatechangeandanyresultingregulationshaveincreasedourpushtosourcelong-termcontractsforrenewableelectricitytoavoidexposuretoelectricitypricevolatilityand/orincreases.Additionally,regulatoryopportunityalsoinfluencedthisstrategy;byadoptinglong-termcontractsforrenewableelectricitynow,westayaheadofpotentialfutureregulations.Aswe’venoticednewopportunitiesresultingfromclimatechange,wealsohaveadoptedseveralnewproductlines.Forexample,in2015welaunchedProjectSunroof,anewonlinetoolthathelpsusersestimatepotentialsolarenergyproductionandcostsavingsiftheyweretoinstallarooftopsolarsystem.In2017,thistoolexpandedcoveragebeyondtheUnitedStatesintoGermany,mapping67millionrooftopsacross8,900cities,whichenabledover2millionuserstomakeinformeddecisionsaboutsolarpanelinstallation.iii.Energyriskmanagementremainsthemostimportantcomponentofourshort-termstrategythathasbeeninfluencedbyclimatechange.ThisincludesourdesiretomaximizeenergyefficiencyinordertoincreasetheutilizationofeachkWhwepurchase.Forexample,comparedwithfiveyearsago,ourdatacentersnowdeliveraroundseventimesasmuchcomputingpowerwiththesameamountofelectricalpower.Wefocusonreducingtheenergyweusebydesigningandbuildingenergy-andresource-efficientdatacentersandofficebuildings,aswellassupportingenergyefficientoperations.iv.In2007,weannouncedourgoaltobecomecarbonneutralwithintheyear,whichweachieved,andwehavemaintainedcarbonneutralityforthelasttenconsecutiveyears.In2012,wesetalong-termgoaltopurchaseenoughrenewableenergytomatchalltheelectricity
